Glinda gives the appearance of being ditzy but she is actually quite shrewd in attempting to discern Dorothy's knowledge of Oz with her question. Glinda knew all along the secret of the ruby red slippers, but withheld it from Dorothy until after she had proved her character. Dorothy accomplished this by protecting Toto and befriending the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodsman, and the Lion as they persevered in their trials journeying to see the Wizard. Glinda's strategy of carrot and stick won out over rival Wicked Witch of the West's game of cat and mouse.

Glinda was a good witch (spiritual being). She was called after the accident happened and came to help Dorothy. When she says that only bad witches are ugly, she is referring to the ones ugly spirits which make.them ugly on the outside as well. Haven't you ever heard an older person say, stop acting ugly or that your attitude makes you look not so good? Your inward man shows through your exterior. She could've taken the Ruby slippers for herself, as she knew the powers they held, but she gave them to Dorothy, seizing them from the wicked witch of the West who thought she deserved them. The wicked witch of the West did not want Dorothy to have that power because she loved having all of the power and using it against others. The witch of the North sent Dorothy on her way, giving her a seal of protection, a kiss on the forehead. She knew when meeting Dorothy that she was the chosen one, the one who was purposed to put the wicked witch of the West in her place, while showing others their strengths and learning of herself and abilities. The Witch of the South could have done everything with the wave of a wand, but she wanted to allow purpose to be carried out. She wanted to see Dorothy walk in her purpose.

Glinda also sets Dorothy off on the journey to find the Wizard so she can go home, only to eventually, in the end, be the one to explain to Dorothy that the Ruby Slippers have the power to send her home and tells her how to use them. She only wanted Dorothy to get into a scrape with the other Wicked Witch and off her, eliminate the competition. Glinda is scary.

*smh* Blah, blah, blah. Listen to the dialogue: "So what the Munchkins want to know is, are you a good witch or a bad witch?" THE MUNCHKINS wanted to know. For all they knew, Dorothy could have been an evil Witch in disguise. As we know (those of us who have actually watched the movie) Dorothy would not have been ready for the information as regards the shoes, nor learned the lesson she had to learn, nor uncovered the deceptions of the Wizard (and it was he, not Glinda, who wanted the WWW destroyed), nor freed her three friends from their personal prisons. And also, for pity's sake, remember that the whole thing was taking place in Dorothy's subconscious. Glinda has no existence apart from Dorothy's dream, at leat in this version of the story.

This is my theory. Dorothy did NOT dream this, but Glinda used her magic to make her THINK she dreamt it all and took away the slippers also when Dorothy had returned. Glinda did use Dorothy so she would be a pawn so that Dorothy would be the only ruler. She probably KNEW the Wizard was a fake and that he would send her away to kill the West Witch so she would possibly die and that he wouldn't be found out, but I think Glinda was also secretly on the sidelines protecting her in the merry dance she sent her on (she did get them out of the funk in the poppy field) Glinda had her plan and saw her opportunity and took it. It was a quest for power but it was also to protect the Munchkins too
@MaskedMan663 жыл бұрын
Nope. It was all a dream; as the MGM bigwigs ordered, it had to be a dream. That was why five characters who were not in the book were put into the movie to provide Dorothy's mind with templates for some of the people she would meet in Oz; also bear in mind that it was the Wizard, not Glinda, who sent Dorothy and her friends to destroy the WWW. As far as the books are concerned, wherein Oz is real, Glinda only rules the southern Quadling Country. The Tin Woodman is Emperor of the Winkies, Tattypoo, the actual Good Witch of the North, rules the Gillikins, and the rulership of the Munchkins changed hands from King Cheeriobed and Queen Orin to the Scarecrow. Princess Ozma rules all of Oz from the Emerald City.

I'm currently writing my master's analyzing this ish of a movie and lemme tell ya, Glinda does not exactly stand the test of time and empowered messages for women.
@MaskedMan664 жыл бұрын
I do hope you looked into the books and the character of Glinda there. Remember that to the American public, to whom the Oz books were an annual event, Glinda was the one who repelled a pretender to the throne of Oz and set in place the rightful heir-- Princess Ozma.
@ingusch37834 жыл бұрын
@@MaskedMan66 I did actually look into the books and made precisely these observations. My main focus was on representations of women as witches in popular movies and tv series, so my comment was referring to movie-Glinda. Book-Glinda is definitely a superior character - I was sad to see what they made of this character for the movie.
@MaskedMan664 жыл бұрын
@@ingusch3783 She's no different in the movie, except which realm she comes from. She is serene, majestic, and protective. She is to Oz what Gandalf was to Middle-earth. To say that she was "manipulative" or "conniving" as some say is them reading into the character things that are not there.
@ingusch37834 жыл бұрын
@@MaskedMan66 idk, I interpreted her behavior in the movie as manipulative at times. and I found that aside from the name and her being beautiful, movie-glinda is a far cry from the powerful, independent witch we meet in the novels. in the books, Glinda helps little girls grow and to assert themselves - in the movie, she teaches a little girl never to leave the safe haven of home again, sending her on the way to become a right angel of the house. But of course, you're entitled to your interpretation, as am I to mine.
@MaskedMan664 жыл бұрын
@@ingusch3783 I don't interpret; I go by what the story says. Glinda is basically to Oz as Gandalf is to Middle-earth, and no more "manipulative" than he is. She's certainly not "dependent" on anyone or anything. And she never told Dorothy not to assert herself-- for one thing, as we saw in her confrontations with Miss Gulch, the Cowardly Lion, and the Wizard, Dorothy had no problem asserting herself!-- nor did she tell Dorothy to never leave home, merely that home is where the heart is. Dorothy's "own back yard" wouldn't always be located behind her uncle's house, this being a Dorothy who had only dreamed about Oz and would presumably grow up and move out at some stage in her life, unlike her literary counterpart, who eventually moved to Oz with her aunt and uncle and thereby brought "home" to Oz.

Stop dissing Glinda! A witch's karma gets written on her face quickly as she ages. But, they don't get ugly until they are 21. It's a union thing. Dorothy is only 16. Therefore Glinda, and everybody else, does not know if Dorothy is a good witch or bad witch. Let's cut Glinda a little slack, 'ay?

True, but I am curious on why Glinda told Dorothy to follow the yellow brick road, wear a dead person’s shoes knowing their sister was pissed about it, and go through all that trouble when she could’ve literally helped go home from the beginning? Still, I had no idea about that. Thanks for sharing such a cool fact and it cleared up some questions I had.
