I'm Dutch, I can't speak for other countries, but in my country Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was and always will be THE soundtrack of the 90's generation. And not just for the Grunge-kids of that era, but for all who were teenager in that particular decade.

Oh ya, that is the case almost everywhere. This song launched grunge into the limelight, ended 80's music, and changed the face of music for the next decade at minimum. Thanks for the comment.

The right answer would have been "you mean behind all that hair"... I knew but there was much to ID him by from those 2 seconds. Also, I can totally relate trying to teach my 8 and 11 year old daughters about 80s 90s music. They made me proud last weekend when my wife and I were watching Netflix and they suddenly turned on Rammstein and started rocking out.

When "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the album "NEVERMIND" came out, in 1991, everything in the world music became "before" or "after" NIRVANA. It was immediately understood that it would mark a generation, but today it's not surprising that it has become a milestone in world music. And I was there, as a teenager in those fabulous years! 🤟🎸 Cheers from Italy! 🇮🇹🍕🍝☕️💚🤍❤️

What makes Nirvana stand out is Kurt's writing. Underrated as a writer. That is why they are one of the best. You do not define a generation with your music, you define it with your words. Like Dylan. Like Beatles. Beach Boys. Etc. The best had the best writers.

There are many many many good bands nowadays. Rock is in a reeeeeaaaally good place now, kinda underground, but growing in nowadays youth. It's like, kids from 14-19 are listening to vinyl, cassettes, deepley in love with 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s rock scene, but going more with the underground vibe. Rock wasn't made to be killed, but to evolve and last until humanity dies.

@@GlitchintheMatrixMultiMedia BTW, I recommend you three bands, for you to listen with your daughter... Los Retros (Someone to spend time with) King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (Do Beginners Luck) and more indie, Marc Demarco (Old Dog or Blue Boy). I was a tweenie back when "grunge" hit. My first exposure to it was Alice In Chains back in ~1990. It was metal, but different. Superb. Goddamn beautiful, actually. Next I know, Nirvana's "Nevermind" album comes out in '91. Even more awesomery, as far as I'm concerned. This played all the time. Next I know, Badmotorfinger gets into the collective conscious. I still love you all, but there are few who still own my heart. My generation got very damn lucky. I expect the slow ones, in the biz, are sucking hind teet these days, as they should.

Love this song. So much angst, so much hormones. Takets me back to my youth. The music during the 90's was fantastic. I've introduced my teenage daughter to 90's music and she likes it a lot. She uses some old clothes of mine too from that era. The other day she had my old flannel shirt and I was like... that shirt is special... I wore it at the Nirvana concert in Stockholm 1992.

Born and raised in Washington state. It’s not uncommon to hear a nirvana song on the radio every couple of hours. This is basically the state song. Drive through Seattle or Aberdeen in the fall and you’ll understand this band perfectly. Also the lyrics Load up on guns, bring your friends It's fun to lose and to pretend She's over-bored and self-assured Oh no, I know a dirty word Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello With the lights out, it's less dangerous Here we are now, entertain us I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now, entertain us A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido Yeah, hey I'm worse at what I do best And for this gift I feel blessed Our little group has always been And always will until the end Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello With the lights out, it's less dangerous Here we are now, entertain us I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now, entertain us A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido Yeah, hey And I forget just why I taste Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile I found it hard, it's hard to find Oh well, whatever, never mind Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello, how low Hello, hello, hello With the lights out, it's less dangerous Here we are now, entertain us I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now, entertain us A mulatto, an albino, a mosquito, my libido A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial, a denial A denial, a denial, a denial, a denial

The Nirvana performance on Top of the Pops in the UK is the one you were alluding to towards the end of the video. The producers of that show demanded the band sing live, but not play their instruments live. Nirvana wanted to play and sing live so they ended up making a mockery of the situation by Kurt singing the song in baritone and fake-playing his guitar like a puppet. It was fun to watch and completely valid.

It was top of the pops and they done it in protest because they were asked to lip sync. Which is good considering what we know now about that show. When I heard this song for the first time, I had no explanation. We knew nothing about them and it was plenty mesmerizing. The more we heard it, the more we wanted. Maybe she doesn't need to know so much about it ahead of time and if there isn't much reaction you can still talk about the history afterwards. I do agree that it isn't bad to give a sense for where the song fell on the timeline of music and culture though. Unfortunately, music isn't brilliant anymore and now we just nerd out at how great the music used to be. Whole albums were brilliant and now we barely get half a decent song... suuuuuuckkkks!

I really don't like that you sound let down whenever she doesn't love a song. It's not reasonable to expect her to share your music taste. All you can do is to share the music. PS. And to be fair, there's no way anyone could recognize Grohl from that video. I doubt even his own mother would know it's him, all you see is someone with long black hair.

When you listen to a song like this for the first time, it's about the experience of the song, how it builds up and sucks you in, you become immersed in the melody and the words. It's an experience which should be savored. You ruined her first experience of this song by pausing at a pivotal moment right as the chorus is about to drop, just to say some stupid shit about Al Jankovic.

The performance you refer to when he messes it up is from the UK when they did "Top of the Pops". Famously, most acts were told to mime singing and playing the instruments and KC took exception to this. On this occasion, they were told to mime the instruments, but he was allowed to sing. Him being weird and messing it all up was his protest at being told they had to mime. He was a great proponent of live music by all accounts.

Okay that explanation of where the term "teen spirit" sounds like you once heard the story and then forgot. "Kurt smells like teen spirit" got spray painted on his bedroom wall by one of his girlfriends friends because his girlfriend wore teen spirit deodorant, however Kurt had no idea it was a brand of deodorant and thought it sounded cool, and it was years later someone pointed out to him that teen spirit was a deodorant.
