The shell expands to the size of a .38 shell upon firing. That work of stretching the shell gives the round much more bang for the buck.The .357 Sig round flies much faster and farther than any other common ammunition, nearly hitting Mach 2 out of the barrel. Being faster, it also has a much flatter, easier to aim, trajectory as aim points get longer. The Sig barrel is absolutely necessary. A normal .40 cal barrel cannot take the stresses. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention: the reason it can fly much much faster than other ammo is that drag goes down the faster it travels above Mach 1. That doesn't make sense, does it? But that's what they pay me big bucks to design aircraft. You don't want idiots to design them. This guy is no idiot. He's great!

I think air marshals carry special ammo that will not penetrate the wall of the aircraft. Not sure exactly what ammo it is, though. You are right; the biggest downside is the cost of the ammo. Not so much the cost to keep a box or two around, but the cost of training and practicing much could get very, very expensive.

My thoughts are all over the place in all the .40 caliber videos I have posted. It's not a magic bullet or anything, but if it's a pathetic cartridge, there are thousands of police departments, competitors, and range plinkers who have not gotten this brilliant message yet. Guess it's a best-kept secret among people who actually use the .40. For people who don't have the option of CCW, it's not as much an issue, but gun carriers tend to be attracted to a substantial round in 9mm size firearms.

@@M4A3 With the advent of the polymer frame pistols, many manufacturers sought to create the best balance of power, controllability, and ammunition capacity. Enter the firm of Sig-Sauer who took the .40 S & W cartridge and necked the case down to .355 inches. The idea was to duplicate the power of a 125 grain .357 Magnum round in a semi-automatic pistol. Unfortunately their lofty goal was never quite achieved. The .357 Magnum Hornady 125 grain XTP bullet averages 1,500 fps and 624 ft lbs of energy while the 124 grain XTP .357 Sig round turns out 1,350 fps and 502 ft lbs. Things don’t fare any better for the Sig when the larger bullets are used, the 147 grain XTP round is traveling at 1,225 fps and 490 ft lbs while the 158 grain .357 Magnum Hornady XTP does better at 1,250 fps and 548 ft lbs. Don’t get me wrong, the .357 Sig is a good defense round, certainly better than the 9mm on any day. In a pistol with a high capacity magazine you certainly won’t be lacking for power and you could do a lot worse. In a smaller gun like the Glock 33 you have a wonderful little concealed carry piece with nine rounds in the magazine. Not too shabby partner but against the .357 Magnum the .357 Sig is still lacking, and that’s where the old revolver cartridge really wins hands down. The whole concept that Sig-Sauer was working towards was to match the Magnum, and that was never done which is why less and less departments are turning to it when they can go bigger with the .40 S & W. Getting down to the nitty gritty, the .357 Sig was a fantastic idea on paper, but like so many good ideas in concept in the real world it just didn’t pan out for the better when you can get the same size pistol in .40 S & W. Factor that in when you put it toe to toe against the .357 Magnum, which has a well deserved reputation as a manstopper, and it clearly loses in every category that matters. In power and performance the .357 Sig tries to be better than it really is, and while it is good it is not good enough to justify the claim of being equal to the .357 Magnum. Despite its age the .357 Magnum has the knockdown and the pedigree to justify its place in the realm of personal defense against this newcomer that is little more than a pretender to the throne.

@hickok4514 жыл бұрын
@MrClayblasdel , Ditto it all day, but it sure ain't the case at 15 to 20 yards. The ballistics are pretty much irrelevant; it's the fact that the slower, heavy bullet is affected more by the recoil of the gun. It gets slung upwards, more or less. The light, fast bullets are out the barrel without being affected as much. There would be exceptions, of course.

@robkilcollins3109 жыл бұрын
The round "might" be, but with the abundance of 9mm ammo easily available at a much much cheaper cost, how much does balistic superiority matter when you can only shoot half as much? (I am a huge .357 sig fan so I'm not knocking this round in Any way, shape or form) but it's just not nearly as available or affordable as the venerable 9mm luger. More shooting makes better shooters.

I just picked up my new Glock 23 tonight and have been looking into all the cool stuff I can do with it. After watching this video, getting a .357 sig barrel is now higher on my wish list. Thanks hickok45!!

Geez, somebody was trying to save a few pennies by reforming some .40 brass? You'd think a person would do some research before launching into such a project, especially just to save a few bucks. :-)

9mm +p+ plus loads still lack a considerable amount of kinetic energy and velocity in comparison with .357 sig. For training a 9mm is indeed the more cost effective round, but the .357 sig is a more powerful round.

Hickock used the slide release !
@Bucko4516 жыл бұрын
That is much smarter than use the rack the slide method. Rack the slide on a series 70 and see what happens, NOTHING. They do not have the capability to pull back the slide to unlock it. But you are waaay cooler to use the tacticool slide rack, ask any tacticool Glock owner.

Thanks for winning me a drink! One of my fellow "gun-nuts' told me I had been doing drugs or dog food to think I could just drop a barrel in and go. I believe you can have two barrels and do the same work with one frame. 40SW for duty and personal defense, 357 Sig when I go after hog. Out here in southeastern Kansas they are a problem. Folks calling it quits, letting the animals run lose. Always like a challenge in the hunt, and if my service G32 can be converted that simple, why not?

My first Glock was (is) a real G-32 in .357 Sig. The 40 barrel (KKM) is for less-expensive practice with cast bullets. Works for me...

+67dodgepolara is there any wear in tare on your g32 and if yes how long did you have it and how often do you shoot it per month? Sorry for all the questions but I currently own twin glock 23 gen3 and im in the market for a 32 gen3. So I was kinda wondering how them good old 357 sigs in glocks hold up. All the 9mm fan bois love to say how 40 s&w beat up glocks but I've seen a 1000 rounds put through a glock 19 and I've seen the same thing happen to a glock 23 both gen3 and the glock 23 was still in one piece while the model 19 guide rod melted so im pretty confident in glocks chamberd in 40s&w when it comes to durability, but the 357 sig kinda scares me a bit at 40,000 psi. Hickock45 ur welcome to join in at any time old timer. P.S love the vids
@67polara9 жыл бұрын
+67dodgepolara In truth I've only fired maybe 200 rounds of .357 I mostly practice with .40 S&W in a K&M barrel. I have I estimate 1500 to 2000 rounds of that and when I clean the frame & slide I'm amazed it looks so new. The S&W revolver this gun replaced had 250 round on it and had to be re-timed at S&W plus a new cylinder-advancer rod so I'm very pleased with the G32. .357 has some real 'pop' though for sure...!

Watched your more updated version of this review today and the upgraded camera and microphone are very noticeable. Personally a huge fan of the .357 Sig however, it does have its negatives. Price is one negative, and it takes time getting comfortable with shooting even if the .40 S&W is comfortable. Penetration is one added benefit for the cartridge as it will have better success engaging a threat through cover and, or concealment. As always good video.

I have the G-33. It's a handful but fun to shoot. Mr. H, loves the subcompacts. I think he would like the 33 a bit better.
@916fanatic17 жыл бұрын
There is no way in hell a 9mm can keep up with the .357 sig in penetration tests. If you are looking for maximum penetration a .357 is the round for you. But that's the problem too, if you shoot someone with a 357 it will go through them and the 2 people behind them too. I'm talking about standard white box ammo not specialized defense ammo that mushrooms immediately.
@916fanatic16 жыл бұрын
jeffel80 I disagree, some do. I carry ball after the first 3 shots of fast expansion ammo because by then your enemy may be hiding behind a car or other object.
@tyrs813 жыл бұрын
In addition to adding the .357 sig to your weapon you can also go to 9mm with a lone wolf conversion barrel and 9mm magazines.
