This is the first truly excellent video that I have seen regarding the Gnarbox 2.0 being used as it was designed to be used for capturing, backing up, and editing video in the field. I purchased the 1 TB version a few days ago, and this video is a fair and excellent guide to using the device. Battery power is excellent at 3-6 hours and file transfers to and from the Gnarbox 2.0 are very fast thanks to its NVME flash drive. I am using my Gnarbox 2.0 with my Canon 5D MK IV for both video and raw photos. The video files captured by this camera are huge, but I have no problems quickly transferring them to the Gnarbox and editing them in LumaFusion. The Gnarbox 2.0 is a unique device well worth consideration of any photographer or videographer who desires to save, protect and work with their files in the field.

This is a fantastic video! Gnarbox & Lumafusion should pay you to make instructional videos for them! I just bought a Gnarbox 2.0 and am using it with a 9.7 32GB ipad pro. I am concerned that if I select "prepare video preview' that it might be transferring data onto the ipad and take up space. Do you know if this is the case, or is it just processing the files onboard the gnarbox so they are in a format that is faster to transfer?
@sambutcher43444 жыл бұрын
I tried it out by creating the preview - and although it took up extra space on the gnarbox, it didn’t use any space on the iPad. 👍

The LaCie Copilot 2TB was the first hard drive on the market to offer in the field features like this and it is around half the price of the gnarbox. A year from now you'll probably be able to buy something like this for around $100. Gotta love technology.

Do you know if the Gnarbox 2.0 SSD will also off-load footage from an iPhone? Considering just how good the new iPhone camera is nowadays, I think more and more people will use an iPhone over other cameras with SD cards. Great video as always!
@AirPhotography5 жыл бұрын
Yes that can be easily done. You were just select the content from the camera roll and select the option to move to files, from there you would select the Gnar box or safekeep app depending what mode you’re in. Find a folder or create a new one and then the files can be moved 🙂

Yes that was a long one for you. I don’t think I have any use for the Gnarbox but it’s always good to learn. I use a wheelchair so I’m not usually out in the field so to speak in a rugged setting. I did purchase the SanDisk SSD drive as well as the Samsung T5 based on your previous tutorials. It will be great to clear up some space on my older original iPad as well as my new one. Any tips for getting started?
@AirPhotography5 жыл бұрын
The only tip I can think of is make sure that you don’t format them and NTFS. Other than that Apple has done a good job at making it very simple and easy to use 🙂

Thank you so much for this video and the time you put into it. I do have a question though! maybe someone can answer it? If I have my Gnarbox 2.0 connected to iPad with Lumafusion. Can I plug an external SSD into Gnarbox 2.0 and access the files on the external SSD within Lumafusion via the Gnarbox 2.0? will it still let me drag only the selected trimmed clip onto the timeline? Or do the files on the external SSD have to be transferred to Gnarbox 2.0 first? then dragged onto the timeline? hope that makes sense to someone! I guess I'm trying to figure out if I need to buy more than a 256g Gnarbox or not? cheers!
@grantmarch5 жыл бұрын
Great video! Thanks! I was just wondering, say you used part of a video file in your LumaFusion edit and only that specific clip was copied over. What would happen if you later needed a few more seconds from that clip? Is the LumaFusion/Gnarbox able to seamlessly handle that? Or does the workflow require you to delete the clip from your iPad and you then have to go and get the longer clip from your Gnarbox?
@BillBooz4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Shawn, that was very informative! I’ve had my 256GB Gnarbox 2.0 and really haven’t been using it efficiently. I also do 98% of my video recording using various IOS devices. What’s the most efficient way to save my recorded video footage to the Gnarbox 2.0?
@AirPhotography4 жыл бұрын
I always use it in wired mode as it is much faster. When plugged in it becomes a drive in your files app that you could copy content over that way

Why use wireless HDD now that iPad OS came out? I have the wd wireless passport and that is painfully slow. Truly un-usable. As well as that, I have the iPad Pro 2018 and for some reason I can’t get files off my ssd to the iPad with iPad os. Does anyone know if it has to be formatted to exfat or ntfs. Thanks again bud, for another great video.

Joe Marzo hi mate im not sure if I understood your question properly but if i want to import files from my ssd card to my Ipad you can use it through ipad Files When you connect your ssd card on ur ipad go to files then on your ipad then you can see ssd card thing then you can impost all the footage into your ioad memory not on your ipad. iCloud photos then go to LumaFusion folder then user media then create a folder and then go to luma fusion you can see it on imports thats the way i do because if u import it on ur icloud and you delete any clips it will affect your clips etc

Michael Trejos Thank you for the reply I appreciate it. I do find it to be way more feature set. I’ve just been having issues connecting drives to Lumafusion but it looks like he explained it perfectly in the video. I’m hoping when I export the LumaFusion project, it does exports in full quality and not using the downgraded files from the gnarbox settings app. (If that makes any sense)
@cuuppaajoe5 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the long text I just meant when we transcode video in the gnarbox setting up, are we only importing the lower quality into Luma? If so how would we export in full quality from Luma without involving gnarbox.

Is there a way to use the gnarbox to edit with lumafusion if you havent upgraded to Ipad OS. I've had co-workers complaining about some hiccups and I've chosen to hold off till the bugs are fixed. I currently use the passport you showed as my " in the field" backup solution.

Alarm-bells rang in me at 09:23 re “Flatten Folders” - not a good idea when you want to be sure to preserve all metadata and especially bad if you have spanned video clips (one long take that the camera splits into several clips whose joining-together is specified (eg to the editing app) by the metadata). Don’t know about LumaFusion in this regard but likely to cause problems if you later use the backed-up footage in or migrate your LumaFusion project/package to Final Cut Pro (FCPX) - the latter being an anticipated future feature of LumaFusion.

I love the concept, but other than extreme rugged outdoor environments, this gear isn’t very cost efficient. A good external SSD and a ravpower filehub gets you everything at 25% of the price. Obviously other than water resistance.
