In episode 5 I clean 30 years of road grime off of the engine, test the new ultrasonic parts cleaner, prep the tank and engine covers for paint, and front end parts arrive.

Unbelievable, dude. I just binged all 5 episodes back - to - front. I'm in Santa Cruz working on a K75, at this point I'm so humbled by your efforts I can barely bring myself to bother with mine since I know it's going to fall so short. Your design and production are amazing! Had a rough day when I found out this morning the oil/water pump seal has blown and now my daily driver is on borrowed time. Your ASMR style video was really cool calming; kudos.

I want to buy a K100 for years, but the lack of space to store it and time to ride is stopping me to do it. Your videos are a motivation to finally gain some courage and get one either way.

Just finished my K100 build two weekends ago. Take your time and have fun with it. I sure learned a lot. Did the same as you on the engine cleaning. Kept everything together, and hung it from a engine hoist. Used engine degreaser, brushed and wiped down, then soda blasted the casing, then blew off with air compressor, used wax and grease remover (pre paint solvent), high temp engine primer (Duplicolor), high temp engine enamel (low gloss black Duplicolor).

Awesome job man! Tip for getting emblems off in the future. Apply heat with a heat gun and then use fishing string or floss to get behind and saw back an forth to cut through the softened adhesive. Once removed, soak it with goo gone and use more heat to remove the remaining adhesive. Works like a charm every time without damaging paint or emblems.

Nice job men, carefully and so detailed! I may recommend a heat gun to remove sticked emblems and protections, it helps a lot. Thanks for sharing your project.

Josh, a tip, if you have air compressor, get a small sand blasting gun and fill it with baking soda, gets all those tight areas super clean. Good video.

Not only the outside, but also the inside of the engine needs some TLC after years of duty. I would have taken it apart and send it to a place where they can revise it. Not that much work from where your at, and it doesn’t have to cost that much. Also saves having to clean most parts in this video and makes the bike really stand the test of time. For the rest: Awesome project!! Love from the Netherlands.

newby design I've rebuilt/restored several bikes and tbh cleaning up old bolts is great until you start putting the bike back together, your immaculate valve cover etc will show them up for what they are, cleaned up old bolts. I found a local metal finishing company, took a bucket load of old fasteners and they bright zinc plated them without breaking the bank. Word of warning, if you take wheel spindles etc tell them to mask the shank or they will be oversize for the bearings. A gallon of brush on degreaser (I use 'no nonsense') goes a dam sight further than aerosol and can be applied using an atomiser ( get water soluble) I'm building something based on the K100RS and have a nice idea to replace the top yoke bolt, I'm going with a conventional brake hose set up rather than the dumb idea BMW had by routing the hose through the steering stem. Next time you find yourself in the shed/garage/workshop would you mind measuring your bolt, just to be sure we're on the same wavelength its the bolt at 4:24 in episode 2 of your brake down video. I need the thread length under the head. I know I have one on my bike but I need the bike mobile to get it to the engineers so would sooner not disturb the brake system if I don't need to. Thanks and good luck with your build

Hey Joe, I know what you mean. I just got the tank back from the painter and it looks like a concours quality paint job so I'm reevaluating the level of finish I want for everything else. Thanks for the electroplating tip, I'll look into that. Ideally I'd just replace all the hardware with OEM nuts and bolts but those have been hard to track down so far. Are you talking about the head tube bolt that goes up through the lower triple, through the head tube, then through the upper triple? The internal threading is 10mm in length. External threads on that bolt are 10mm as well.

@@CURV-LAB OEM's going to be tough simply due to the age of our bikes, most nuts and bolts can be swjapped for stainless etc but the obscure ones (odd length shank etc) will be difficult as you said and this is where the plaiter comes in handy. Regarding the top bolt I think I need to pull mine apart and measure it, I have been given several different lengths and I think some bikes came with a different set up from the factory. BMW liked to make things complicated. Good luck with your build bud
