My son, a soon to be 2LT, follows your page and has found your blogs to be very helpful. Thanks for keeping it 100 and not hiding the tough parts of Army life. The choice between the two, college or Army, has a lot of different angles and it really depends on the readiness and mindset of the person when making such decisions. As a retired veteran, I know the long term benefits of both options. Keep reaching them and keep teaching them. Stay safe LT.

Dexter Kimble I’m glad they’re helping him. That’s why I make them. If I can help somebody in something that wasn’t provided for me then I’ll feel accomplished. I Look forward to serving with your son when he commissions.

I’m going to join the ARMY Reserve and do JROTC, then I’m going to do Active for 4 years as a LT and I might switch to National Guard, I was a degree in criminal justice too

It would be cool to see a video on how you’re living as a 2LT.

What a lot of people don’t know is that YOU CAN DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. As a civilian, you can enroll in school. Once enrolled, do a semester and then sign up for the guard or reserve. When you’re not drilling, you’re a student. You’d be enlisted in the guard or reserve and a college student. You can even do this for ROTC. When it comes time to commission, you’ll sign a conditional release from your guard or reserve unit and go commission. Just know, that to be considered a prior service officer (OE pay) you need to serve 4 years and 1 day minimum. So, do some guard/reserve time to gain that time in service, knock out some schooling with it, and once you accomplish 4 years and 1 day, commission and now you’ll have a higher retirement. YOU CAN DO BOTH AT THE SAME TIME. It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Tracy Coleman hey Tracy, I’ve known a few TACP and TACP officers and they’ve all said being on the Air Force side of things was a million times better for living standards and it’s the same paycheck. There are ways to still be Air Force but basically be with Army the whole tome like being a weather officer with the 18th weather squadron at Fort Bragg, being a TACP Officer, or simply picking up an AFSC that would be found on an Army post. Army is awesome in providing schools and leadership opportunities so you can’t go wrong. Just know that both branches have the same pay BUT the difference in coming in, the army will tell you if you’re active duty, guard, or reserve. Whereas, Air Force will put you as active duty unless you ask to guard or reserve instead so that’s a huge plus towards your retirement. Also keep in mind, you can be Air Force and go to army courses. Food for thought. I was in this boat literally last month and after a long time of pros and cons, there are really no cons. Just different styles of pros. It just came down to what my family would enjoy because I knew I’d enjoy either side. Army is dope. Love them. Air Force is dope too but select communities.
