One thing you might not know about Mark is that he is an introvert who stuttered sometimes when he was younger. He arrived in Korean knowing nothing about the culture and the language, bc unlike other American, Canadian or Australian kpop idol, his family is not Korean, and unlike Asian idols he was not familiar with kpop culture. He immersed himself so much in the language that he became almost unfamiliar to his native language, having difficulties to speak English in public. It was only after a few years that he overcame it, and now he’s able to switch from Korean to English to Mandarin without blinking. And his Japanese rap is amazing too.

I remembered Mark was not that good in Korean yet and he was arguing with Hui (Pentagon) and Young K (Day6) was translating. JB (GOT7) and Youngjae (BAP) came to help but in the end, they were both arguing. It was funny that Young K had to translate everything for the four of them. I know it was not related to the video but I just remembered.

The fact that you mentioned that Mark's first instinct is to use Korean is interesting because one time the Korean members were talking about how natural Mark's Korean is. They talked about how they were shocked that even while he was in his own environment playing video games, he still ends up screaming things in Korean instead of switching to English. I guess he's been surrounded by Korean so much that he just naturally thinks in Korean now lol

Yes even Korean fans always said his Korean was very proper and polite. Always perfect. Mark uses short sentences in both English and mandarin too. That’s his personality. He’s what the romans termed “laconic.” Remember that famous Spartan quote “if.” That’s literally him. I think if he were to be a famous writer he wouldn’t be a Tolstoy but an Ernest Hemingway.. Also thank you for noticing that he listens more than he speaks. It dovetails with the above point. He’s someone who listens and summarizes the crux. His members often said the crucial veto was always his, as nobody doubted his judgement on controversial issues. Not only that, he would logically, and succinctly explain why it had to be so. Thanks for your analysis. He’s kinda perfect in ahgase’s eyes. He’s good at literally everything, including very scary martial arts he had to pull off in choreographies, all kinds of extreme sports, and he also picks up new things fast. He also speaks with a lotttttt of responsibility. That’s why he was chosen as the main visual representative of got7. (Jackson is face of the group while Jinyoung is center.) But he’s the opposite of Jackson in every way. Not only physically, but in personality and speaking. He’s taller, leaner, paler, succinct, a good listener while Jackson is kinda shorter, broader, tanner, and a very good talker. Like a vampire and werewolf as they’re called in the fandom. One is classy, somewhat inaccessible and elite while the other is a mood making, gregarious and loquacious cub. They’re still bff’s as they were the only Chinese speakers in the group, but they’re absolutely polar opposites in every which way. If they were to choose a profession, Mark would be a pilot or someone needed in a crisis who handles everything well. In the same way Jackson would be a stand up comic as there’s no way Mark could pull of public speaking.

I like the way you explained how really mark is and it’s shows that you know him very well, but for Jackson u connected him with "funny" and "fun" 😂eventough he is a funny guy and more energetic than the others, but u can really count on him , he is also soo goood at handling and dealing with the things .So i think he wouldn’t just "panic" and "scream " as you said . @@crazykids_2014 You don't seem to understand that being American is a nationality more so than anything else. Anyone can be American. It's not a race. It simply means to have citizenship there. In other words, no one can look American as being American isn't a race thing. Mark Tuan is of Taiwanese descent and was born in America making him Taiwanese American. He fits Korean beauty standards simply because he's Asian and has the right features to fit it. Nothing more or less.

When you were starting to talk about how Mark's sentences are short I guessed right away where you were going. Although I don't know Korean I also thought he talked like that because his vocab wasn't expansive. It's actually interesting because years ago when I tried to learn Korean the thought I kept coming up with was, as I described it, Koreans speak in point form, short sentences, but as you state they just don't ramble as much as English speakers do.

You’re right when you say Mark probably thinks to himself in korean. He’s said himself that he does think in korean when he’s in Korea and sometimes he struggles to switch back to English haha. He has forgotten English words in interviews before and tried to translate his thoughts from korean haha. I think part of why Mark can sound so natural speaking korean is because he grew up in a bilingual household where he probably heard as much mandarin at home as he heard English while he was out of the house, so he’s been exposed to more sounds and can detect and repeat well. Would love to see you grade Bambam and Jackson too purely because they’re the opposites of Mark - total extroverts who probably have stronger native accents when they speak but superb vocab because they voluntarily speak more and use those words more. Bambam is really quite korean in his attitude and mannerisms too, and I think it comes from not even knowing English when he got to Korea, which a lot of foreigners could rely on when they got stuck. Bambam had to assimilate into korean culture right away.

About that part when he immediately screamed in Korean after seeing the ghost - I think the language he thinks in depends more on the setting than his native language (ofc this still does count though). I'm not sure how to explain it clearly enough but I basically do the same thing - my native language is Polish but I've been raised in a heavily English speaking setting which led me to speaking both of those languages fluently (and thinking in both of them too). When I'm in Poland with my Polish friends, I think in Polish and kind of automatically switch to it - although it takes some time. During periods I mostly am with English speakers, my brain switches again and my thoughts and reactions will be in English. It's not always super clear tho, I've been struggling with being bilingual especially as a little kid, fortunately it gets better with time. tl;dr: I think because Mark lived almost solely in Korea for all those years (trainee time + part of GOT7, 11 years in total = almost half of his life) he got used to thinking in Korean since that was the language he was hearing and been all around - life's just easier when you immediately speak the same language as your friends. I do believe his brain will switch to thinking in English right now that he's back home.

Lovely video! I always felt Mark was confident with what he knows in Korean which is totally fine. Anyway, i hope you could consider judging Handong from Dreamcatcher! I know they arent as high-profile as the others youve grades, but Im extremely curious because her korean doesnt sound too “slurred” as other chinese idols I know (namely tzuyu and vivi). Thanks!

This was very interesting to watch as I‘m learning Korean too! ☺️ What I‘d like to point out is that Mark‘s sentences in English are short as well hahaha so I guess it‘s just a part of his personality!

The number of times I've been in the process of trying to translate something long and suddenly realize that there is a much simpler succinct way to say it lol. This video serves as a reminder 😅

Mark is the best one in korean, specially grammar. Still in general Mark likes to go to the point. That is why he says less words in any situation. But is true, as he doesn't know as much as he want so he thinks on the easiest way to say things.

Thank you for checking GOT7 out! I really enjoyed this video. Mark is known to be a bit quiet compared to other members, but the korean members always make jokes saying that Mark is just a native Korean in disguise

Great video! Next time, you should grade Yuqi and Minnie from IDLE. A lot of MCs and radio interviewers always comment how great their Korean is, but I really can’t hear the different between them, soojin, and Shuhua.

When I speak in foreign languages, I use short sentences in order to get the rhythm and intonation correct. Otherwise, I believe that I will fall back on the pauses and emphasis that I use when speaking English. What 'fillers' are used when speaking Korean, as you are slow in getting your thoughts out, or which words can you draw out when you are deciding what to say? Each language seems to have special sounds or words also, that show that you are listening. Does Korean?
