@@DenerWitt I want there to be stakes in the fight, Kong got his shoulder dislocated and without knowing anything about anatomy he just crushed his shoulder into a building *without toppling it mind you* and completely fixes himself and godzilla scratched up Kong to high hell and they just kind of brushed it off. Zilla got so much head trauma in the movie he is about as cognizant as the drinker himself yet he just kind of roars and swims away like nothing ever happened. And what about all of the giant monsters from the last zilla movie that pledged their loyalty to him as if he were their king? Guess they just wanted to see his rule end asap. And also when kong should've buried the axe (made out of zillas fin somehow) into his head an explosion happened instead of zillas instant death. If anyone put enough thought into this movie and pointed out everything wrong with it the review would be longer than the movie itself.

only for the godzilla and kong fans that were already invested though, not really everyone. I hope you guys realize how expensive making a movie like this is and making a good or just storyline for the whole movie instead of like 30% of the movie can go a long way to get people to check it out.

do you REALLY want 2hrs of fight scene? it's like having sex all day long, sounds nice in your head, but 2 hrs in and you just want a shower and a nap like an old man. they need to build up and pace out the fight scenes SOMEHOW. the human stuff should probably be focused on hyping up the fights and providing breaks between them. trying to make the humans "relatable" characters with tragic backstories and deep motivations is the problem, you look at old monster movies, the humans are random military dudes and families not doing much but reacting to monster stuff. The best instance of the humans being actual characters of any sort is in Gamera movies where there's this bizarre "Gamera, friend of all children" thing going on that works due to the sheer absurdity; his theme song is a bunch of kids singing this happy (and creepy) kindergarten tune, its great.

They should have made the monsters the main focus from the beginning. The human characters are often really dull and boring. Like, in kotm, there's godzilla and ghidorah fighting and it suddenly cuts to the boring mom character running around on the ground doing a "heroic sacrifice" or some shit. Just ruins the whole pace of the fight. And the fight itself wasn't all that great either. That said I still firmly believe that a talented crew can make a compelling story and characters you care about while also having giant monsters fighting. Like, maybe the destruction caused by the monsters fighting could lead to different groups some wanting to destroy the monsters and some seeing them as forces of nature that we have to learn to live with. Maybe the humans try and succeed in killing a monster only for it to lead to catastrophic consequences because of a massive gap in the food chain. You could explore all kinds of interesting concepts with these instead of the man vs nature theme they always use in the most shallow way imaginable.

The human story in Godzilla 2014 was compelling because it explained why the monsters were there, gave us a new perspective while still focusing on the monsters, and generally didn't rely on cheesy jokes and "My wife died so that justifies me being a shitty character" like GvK did. Seriously, I hated the people at the center of that movie's shitty family drama so much, had one of the monsters stepped on and killed that whole family in the first act, it would have been a better film. No Godzilla or King Kong movie has ever had a *good* plot. Yet, I still love them. Well, the big G anyway. Been watching that shit since I was like 5. First 24 hour movie marathon I ever sat through was Godzilla movies. They are so campy and dumb, but something about Godzilla just really captured my heart. The only things I care about in these movies are the giant monster fights. And honestly, the design for Legendary's Godzilla is awesome. Probably my favorite rendition of him so far. Kong's okay too I guess, but giant lizard with atomic breath is just so much cooler than giant gorilla with... slightly above-average intelligence for a gorilla. 3:37 Physics? My dude. Do you see the size of those animals? Physics left the building, got on a bus, and went to Albuquerque. If anyone brought physics into the equation they'd both collapse and die almost instantly.

The decision for changing the tempo honestly has a reason to it. This is traditionally applied by japanese filmmakers when it comes action oriented kaijuu movies that is still practiced till these days. Ultraman series for instance, still uses this technique. Slowmo only to emphasize on their size, wide angles to assess their surrounding. And when the illusion that they are big is finally delivered, they go all out with the fight with having no need to maintain the slowmotion, just so that they could deliver a thrilling action

I agree with you over fusion, but the movie did a reasonably good job of balancing the human action and monster action, and making Kong the protagonist was a good choice, and he actually has an arc. Unlike KoTM, it actually delivered on what fans wanted. And the action is better than CD implies. There's a clear narrative to the battles. I agree that it would be nice if the it was better done, and I'll always prefer the Godzilla films which actually deliver in the brains department, but the movie nailed the monster action in a surprisingly well done way. It's not well written, but it is well str8uctured if that makes sense. Basically, it was well executed dumb fun. Everyone in Team Kong is useful. -Pennywise's older brother ever tried to go to Hollow Earth but couldn't enter and caused his brother died. Meanwhile, everyone in Team Godzilla is totally useless. -The podcaster guy is just a theory conspired and has been undercover for Apex to discover what's going on on the company and he didn't do anything to stop them. -Millie Bobby Brown's character even though she's the daughter's director of Monarch just there to convince everyone that Godzilla isn't bad and becomes walking exposition. -Meanwhile, her friend is just there for some reason until all of the sudden he becomes the real MVP to shut down Mecha Godzilla by pouring the alcohol. Yes, they do. Neither are killed, but one clearly comes out on top in the fight and in fact is at a severe disadvantage and fighting as the underdog throughout the film. Spoiler: Godzilla nearly kills Kong in the first meeting at sea, and he only barely manages to escape with his life thanks to the humans helping him out. The second time, in Hong Kong, the axe allows Kong to temporarily gain the upper hand leading to one character saying "I guess round two goes to Kong". Godzilla is not even close to down and out, though, and they soon resume the fight and it's much longer --it doesn't go well for Kong, at all. Basically, once Godzilla adapted to the surprise tactic of Kong being armed and got pissed off and serious, he mopped the floor with him. Godzilla has him completely at his mercy, and only doesn't finish him because Kong showed bravery and defiance even despite having lost. Instead of killing him, Godzilla walks away while Kong is flat on his back down for the count. Only after Mechagodzilla shows up and begins kicking Godzilla's ass and the humans shock Kong's heart to get him back on his feet does Kong rejoin the fight --on Godzilla's side. The two of them work together to destroy Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla returns to the sea. Final outcome: Godzilla wins, 2 rounds out of 3 plus knockout.

"You don't watch a Godzilla movie for the compelling storylines. You want to see monsters blow shit up." On the surface, this is also the appeal of Pacific Rim. Though Pacific Rim actually had the humans fight the Kaiju in giant robots, rather than conscripting a big ape they couldn't even be sure wouldn't just team up with Godzilla...

Yeah, but even this braindead franchise has differences. Skull Island is the only one i would call a decent movie, because not counting Captain Cheesecake, there were some attempt at character building and genuine thrills. Also Hiddlestone, Goodman, Reilly and even Jackson in his Captain Ahab mode were hell of lot better actors than annoying zoomer teenagers and cardboard "scientists" that plague rest of the "Monsterverse". That said original Kong and Godzilla movies are so much above this trite that it's not even funny.

We get invested in Kong with the constant theme of going home and him finding his family since we learned in Kong Skull Island part of the reason he's as aggressive as he is is because he's a lonely pissed off orphan and we see that once the girl tells him "your family might be down there" Kong with 0 hesitation dives straight into that hole cause all he wants to do is find more people like him again and find his real home. The comics say the Axe belonged to Kong's father before he abandoned it to go to Skull Island thinking it would be safer (obviously that failed cause both he and his wife died and yes they should've saved it for the movie but its not 100% unexplained at all in anything) Godzilla isn't "just kinda roaming about" he's destroying mecha godzilla parts since they're all crafted with bits and stuff of the severed ghidorah head from the king of monsters end credits scene. Which is why he attacks all those bases with Mecha G parts... And finally Mecha Godzilla was treated as an evil creation and not an equalizer for the humans because A. they showed there was no need for him to be made anyway since they have a line towards the beginning of the film about how very little kaiju were seen in years up to this point (which means most likely no one really died from these things at this point) and also shady businessman was doing it just because he hated Godzilla and wanted power for himself not to better humanity as a whole However yes there are issues with the movie. Yes basically all characters except Kong, Godzilla(even still we already know all about him from the previous 2 films) and the Girl are all poorly explained and have basically no reason to be there. Yes it's weird how most character development and plot details are mainly discovered by quick "hard to get a feel for" lines and such. Yes Shady Businessman villain is cliche as all living fuck and he doesn't really do anything to stand out in the genre at all aside from "being the Dos Eques "stay thirsty my friends" guy"and Sirazawas son's role and sudden death makes no sense whatsoever and he should've been saved for another story but this movie does still have moments where you can care about the characters(at least some of them) or get invested. Is it rushed? Yes. Could it have been better? Yes. Is it still a movie worth investing your time in if you care at all about kaiju lore even if most the human plot is boring aside from Mecha G stuff Adventuring with Kong and the occasional good joke? Yes. There is a reason to be invested here despite the issues of the film.

To be fair, The Drinker does make a few good point, even running with the idea of this just being a dumb, fun, monster movie. Some narrative stakes, while not always necessary, would have been nice to add a bit of context to the fight itself and might have made the tact on human moments a bit more entertaining to sit through. Also, if the Drinker is correct in his observation about Godzilla and Kong not taking any noticeable damage or injuries during their fight, then I sadly have to say that is a strike against the movie. Have the fun of watching a big monster fight is see how messed up the monsters get wailing on each other while they keep fighting through their injures. It adds tension as well as a visual indicator at who has the upper hand in the moment and in what way. With all that said, I'm sure Godzilla V. Kong is an entertaining move, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't point out its short coming or demand more from out big, dumb, kaiju fight movies.
