Well, in the games, they have introduced entirely new characters to be the main character of the game they were introduced in, as far as the Campaign goes. Characters like Shujinko and Taven. The thing with those characters, though, was that they actually had a personality and were interesting characters in an interesting story. I think if they cast a better actor with better material to work with, it could have worked. The problem, though, is that they didn't, so it didn't really work very well.

I think the best actors were Josh Lawson (Kano), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), and Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero). I thought Josh Lawson really added to every scene he was in, stealing the show constantly with his improv and self-awareness of the movie he was in. Don't get me wrong, you could make a serious Mortal Kombat movie with themes of honor and family, but that's not what this movie is and Josh Lawson knows it so why not have fun? Hiroyuki Sanada is just badass in general, that was god tier casting. Joe Taslim is also badass, but I wanted to point out how the dude can act with just his eyes, damn he can really make his presence known and he emoted pain very well using his eyes only.

There's plenty of characters that could be the main protagonist of a Mortal Kombat movie -Liu Kang, Raiden, Sub-zero, Johnny Cage, Sonya, Jax, Scorpion and Kano just to name a few. But if you make a Street fighter adaptation and don't make Ken, Ryu and/or Chun Li the main protagonist, you're doing something wrong. Here, I'll give you Sakura and Guile as two valid secondary options, but that's basicaly it.

I disagree about the first movie - in an age when video game adaptations were unpopular, Anderson made a film that was simplified enough for normies to understand and enjoy, but with all the core elements of the first game. It had all six video game fighters, the antagonists were all there too, along with a couple of MK2 characters. The story was the simple Enter the Dragon rehash, but that's what the game was a rip-off of anyway. The direction was impressive enough and for the fight scenes he actually made the decision to film in wide shots without cutting too much to show the talent the martial artists on set had. The soundtrack was a perfect match to keep the adrenaline pumping throughout the movie. You also have to remember that it was back when there was no live action or animated MK products, so to see something that (for the most part) faithfully recreates the look of the game, and the feel of the game was a huge success.

Think of Godzilla 2014. Apparently Brian Cranston was "underused". No, they used as much of them as they had. They could only afford to pay him for a few days work and he got on board late into production. It's very common. Just because a film has 30 days of filming (for example) doesn't mean all actors are available all 30 days. Some might only have a day or two, having only been paid for 2 days work not 30.

I'll disagree on a point. The reason I like Mortal Kombat 1995 over this one is MK95 was the one which didn't take itself seriously. IMO MK21 was very 2020s, trying to be serious about laughable stuff (like the Justice League movie), therefore losing any potential charm. That's why Kano was the best part in that movie. * The better charisma of MK95 characters, Liu Kang, Sonya, Rayden, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage. Some of the characters in MK21 were unbearably terrible (rayden & shang tsung especially). * The fights from MK95 were not too great except for the later added 2 fights (Johnny cage Vs Scorpion and Liu Kang vs Reptile) But at least in every fight there was choreography and longer takes. Fights in MK21 were exactly how I thought it would be, Marvel type fights which cuts every 2 seconds so you wouldn't need to work too hard on the choreography (or logic). * Too much needless fan service. Saying "flawless victory" or "Kano wins" to themselves. The fact that everyone has to have an arcana so they can shoot stuff from their hands like the game. Even Kano's eye became magic now. And Jax's arcana is better arms? * Music was generic AF. * OK but seriously the worst part was how bad Shang Tsung and Rayden were compared to MK95. Didn't even care about Cole that much. * A million more plot points which don't make sense. What happened to just shipping them to an island? There wasn't even a tournament. It was just a franchise starter pre-movie. MK95 could definitely be improved upon, with maybe Raid like choreography and brutal fights, more time for all the ninjas etc.

Up-voted but there a re a few things I want to address. *Liu Kang and Shang Tsung were WAY better in the original but I feel that the "new" Sonya Blade was better cast and a better character (though I will admit I had to ask my friend "Since when is Sonya a needy little sister tagging along?"), the original was kind of a powder puff though competently acted. I loved Chistopher Lambert as Raiden, but it was still a strange choice. Since there is no new Johnny Cage there really isn't a reason to compare other than to say he would have been a better choice than the OC. The new versions of Scorpion and Sub-Zero were infinitely superior to the originals, and I love the new origin of how Jax lost his arms (but not how he got the new ones, really stupid), and Jax actually had something to do this time around. *I think the fights were WAY better in the new movie, and were really the highlights, but you are right about the old vs. the new, too many quick cuts. *The arcana is something I have to completely agree with you on. Same with the music, and the fan service ..... except for "Kano wins", that one really did seems to actually be something that Kano would do (narcissistic douche that he is). But yeah, while I am pointing a few things that I sort of disagree with you about I for the most part agree with you about the state of the new movie.

When you're talking about two different portrayals of the same character, it's as much about the writing as the performance. I think Asano is a great choice for Raiden, it's just that he didn't have much to work with in this script. Put him in MK95 as Raiden instead of Lambert, and I'd still like that Raiden far more.

Many people ask what was good about 1st M.K? Was it the music or The fight or The plot? My answer is always to look at how the actors played the given role. specially Raiden and Shang-Tsung played by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa and Christopher Lambert. Christopher Specially stole every shot he was in. The story was presented as believable and grounded ( as much as it can be given the scenario). The character showed sophistication and respect ( remember how Shang- Tsung and his Gang addressed Raiden) that injected a level of majesty and charm to the whole setup. This latest one lacked all those things and specially the actors were terrible. Shang-Tsung came on as a cheap gangster instead of a majestic sorcerer, and the less said about Raiden the better. Hiroyuki Sanada and Josh Lawson gave a little grace to this otherwise total disaster movie.

@Brad Thomas bro, all they had to do was leave Liu Kang as the main protagonist as in the 95' movie and just maybe have Kung Lao as co-protagonist (like in the game MK: Shaolin Monks). There was little to no changes to be done, therefor no excuse to not have Johnny Cage in the movie and replace it with a new but unmemorable character (unless wHiTe MAlEs bAd or something). They had a *very simple* job and they still managed to fuck it up. Damn, the whole thing could've been just about Scorpion and Sub Zero and I guarantee you that nobody would've complained.

And if you'd ever played the games you'd know Johnny Gage one of the original characters and a pivotal one in story. No I'm more annoyed with Liu Kang not been the main protagonist(side from a major character being removed) . Oh and look at that ya tard, he's Asian like a major amount of the characters were since the beginning. If I remotely had a problem with that I wouldn't love Hong Kong cinema as much as I do.

Yeah, I actually enjoyed this movie pretty thoroughly. Really liked Kano, he was funny, charismatic and memorable. Although I too noticed that he was kinda the punching bag for some of the other characters and I'm not as much a fan of that. I also like Kabal, Reptile and Liu Kang. I just wish Reptile had more screen time. Loved how they went full monster form with him though.

It has issues but it's still an entertaining movie. It has a fun soundtrack, memorable characters like Raiden who was fun and had a personality, unlike the new one who was boring and forgettable. It's kinda sad that a PG-13 version is better than the R-rated. Can you beat the 1995 MK? Of course you can, you have the opportunity but the new one didn't. If you want a better MK movie, Riki Oh: The Story of Ricky.

Yeah, maybe Drinker is downplaying the original a bit, he is kind of right as the movie is just a dumb martial arts movie with flashy(though dated) effects and a over the top plot, but theres a reason why that plot was used for the reboot. It was a solid adaption of barely a plot that was given by the first game, and each character was a totally correct and well done interpretation of their game versions(with the exception of Raiden, who was changed into a guide instead of a fighter, though the change was smooth and a smart move imo). If they wanted to make a more serious and gritty version of the tournament, thats fine, but not at the cost of the characters or a solid plot.

I love how Cole's special power is literally a suit of Plot Armor that instantly makes him nigh impossible to injure, makes him stronger, and lets him turn his enemies' strength against them, because his skills were shit and it was the only way to make him a legitimate contender. Good thing Hanzo didn't see him before.
