I had Tesla's service show up at my house to put a rack on my model y. They showed up in a model s and it looked beautiful. I said that looks like a new Tesla and he said no. It's a 2013 that they got on a trade-in and it has over $900,000 mi on it on the same battery

It's rare, but still a lot more common than getting that kind of mileage out a dino burner without a rebuild.

Good Info thanks. I have never been able to get a clear answer. When a battery needs replacing does it just suddenly lose a lot of range or is it a slow process. And what exactly causes batteries to fail while others do not?
@zerix015 ай бұрын
There is no set life on a battery so typically you will just see capacity degrade over time based on usage and certain types of environmental stress. That doesn't mean your battery can't just stop suddenly one day but chances are a control module died or faulted and the battery itself is fine. These tend to be much cheaper replacements as the whole battery isn't replaced. You can think of this like a starter control module in an ICE car failing. The car won't start but probably not the end of the world replacement. Some EVs will even detect a battery cell that is no longer working at the correct tolerances compared to the remaining cells. If they drop in voltage too far out of balance from the rest, they can disconnect sections of cells to keep them out of the mix. This will usually show up as a large sudden drop off in capacity as that block of cells is now dead weight. It will probably be fine to drive for a long time like that but with reduced capacity and isn't a sign that more will necessarily die. In rare and worst case scenarios, if you hit something that impacts or impales the battery, it should go into a safety shutdown. Punctures could cause a fire but most EVs are well shielded under the body and at the front area of the battery that this should be very very rare.

I’ve had a 95 Honda accord v6 that went over 300k & gave it to my brother. He drove it for awhile & sold it. His newer accord has over 300k he owns today. I have a Honda pilot only 240k which I’m probably trading it for a Tesla. Lol

How on earth can you make a living in CA being an Uber driver with a brand new Tesla? I find that really hard to believe. It's expensive to buy and service on it is insanely expensive. A battery replacement is $30k all by itself isn't it? I assume he must have installed a charging station in his home too which is even more of a financial outlay.

Hey Brian awesome channel. I notice YOU bought a new Tesla rather than used. There are NOW in Canada Tesla Model S available used for prices that are affordable to real people, but the risk of buying a car and having the battery fail (or anything ELSE) is what holds me back (and I will bet a LOT of people) from buying a Tesla. I can judge the state of health of an ICE vehicle reasonably well, and I can also find a mechanic I trust who can do that even better. Tesla doesn't have a decent repair network, and certainly the anecdotal consensus is that they are EXPENSIVE to repair (even moreso than Mercedes) but at least you CAN repair a Mercedes. Can you address this? Is it FUD? Buying a used car is always a crapshoot, although much less so now than in the pre-internet days when automakers could (AND DID!) hide their failings well. If you buy a Model 3 used and NOT through Tesla, CAN you transfer the warranty? (Just the powertrain, although some of the other components would also be showstoppers).

@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck Some quantitative data would be helpful. Although I don't TRUST them (at all), I know where I can find a Mercedes dealer. TBH, I don't trust MOST of the people who work in the automotive sector, even honest mechanics get corrupted by the need to pay overheads and compete with dishonest shops.
@capnkirk55285 ай бұрын
@@FrunkensteinVonZipperneck And how would you get one? Tesla doesn't make that easy, whereas buy a car at a "stealership" you can force them to provide the warranty (on the contract and in writing). The few times in my life I've bought used from a dealership, THAT is explicitly written into the contract. I would love to buy a used Tesla and a robust used market is REQUIRED for Tesla's long term success (having always been rich Elon may not understand this), but without some method of removing the risk people who HAVE to buy used can't afford to take a chance.

Curious how the seats and interior after driving uber for 400K?
@AlexEVRepair5 ай бұрын
The interior is still in surprisingly good shape. I did replace the bottom cushion on the driver's seat as the foam was worn out, also also the steering wheel as it was pretty gross, haha. Now it spends a lot of time as my "work truck", and I haul things around in the back all the time (it's amazing how much space there is with the back seats folded down).
