The thing is we DID have a fade to black with time. We have waited an ENTIRE WEEK to see if Joel lived. People that don't know the game must have spent the week freaking out. I personally loved that he was actually awake and they had a few moments together because in the game he is out after he falls off the horse and knows nothing until he wakes up after she gets in trouble with david and goes looking for her. The show gave us a moment where she came back to him, she chose him again after he told her to go and he has finally accepted that they belong together even if that time is only a few hours until he dies.

43:58 Reilly DID FIGHT. She rejected option one and chose to not give up. But to fight for every moment. That’s what she taught Ellie to do, fight for every moment. Now with Joel. 44:49

To add onto this, Ellie smashing every piece of glass in the display case isn't her fighting. It's her being so scared and angry about not only herself but her best friend being bit that she has what looks like a tantrum. Once Ellie is able to calm down, she is able to talk to Reilly and look for the comfort and validation that we are used to seeing Ellie look for from Joel. Reilly has already dealt with death before. She joined the Fireflies almost a month before these events, and you could make the leap that she has been prepared to die for a while. I believe she handled the news of being bitten like that of someone used to death (see how Joel reacts to death in a similar but even more detached manner). Reilly has accepted it already, and just wants to spend the rest of their time together before they "lose their minds". Side note: do you think one of those pipe bombs Reilly had were used for the explosion that hit Tess and Robert in episode 1? Spoiler for The Last of Us Part 2: . . . . I wonder if this scene is supposed to foreshadow how Ellie reacts to the people closest to her dying? Like it feels like a temper tantrum to me, while understandable given the circumstances, also shows the rage that is built up inside of her from her trauma. I think that is the level of ferocity we will witness in the coming episodes (If you know you know) and season(s?).

I don’t consider it fighting just waiting for the fungus to take you over. As a kid what Riley says is romantic and heartfelt, but as an adult and a practical person it’s extremely dumb and selfish, making other people deal with you after you’re a rabid fungus monster. And cowardly to make someone else have to kill you. Actually being responsible, but I guess if Riley was responsible, she would would be alive.
@Zoidberryable
@Zoidberryable Жыл бұрын
@@mrdavman13 You're just deliberately misinterpreting the message here? She's saying they should fight for every moment they have left even if things seem hopeless and that's incredibly important in this kind of world. Because if they went with option 1, Ellie would be fucking dead. It's not like they knew she was immune, after all. Riley's words also encourage Ellie to stick with Joel and help him despite how bleak things look. Your take seems less adult and more just extremely uncharitable that a couple of teenagers didn't want to kill themselves.

I really disagree with the comment about the flow of the episode, I felt like the flashback was in the best place they could fit, considering it was a DLC that was out of the original sequence of the game's story. Having the flashback be like Ellie remembering those events while thinking on Joel's order to leave him and go to Tommy, ultimately giving us an understanding of what she's been through, why she chooses to stay and who her previously mentioned "first kill" was, was the best choice. Also, tho I agree that thinking Joel was dead and playing as Ellie in the game was a cool moment, I don't really think anything was lost by not having any of that tbh, just that hand holding scene was so powerful and worth much more to have than the overdone "ooh no that character is dead... just kidding!" thing. The flashback is important to Ellie's character and I think putting it anywhere else would feel weird, so we couldn't go straight to David, which would make the only other option be to make some original scenario for Ellie to be alone before all that, of which I don't really see the point too. Now, the only thing I really missed was the arcade scene from the game, where, unlike in the show, the machine wasn't working and Riley narrated the game and Ellie imagined it, I felt like that was really special and probably one of my favorite scenes from both games. I feel like I've only seen complaints about the pacing of the episode by people who played the game and it felt to me like people just have no chill and want to see what comes next. I'm not even gonna comment much on the complaints of "introducing a character and killing them in the same episode", just for how that criticism felt empty to me on both times I saw it (ep 3 and this one) when those characters are clearly introduced with a purpose and achieve that same purpose in the story and the characters development.

One slight disagreement: I don't think there was any chance of convincing people that the character played by Pedro Pascal was actually dead no matter if they had added the rabbit shooting scene. One of my buddies is watching it blind and he just stated outright that there is 0 chance they're killing off Pedro Pascal in the 6th episode

@@BOLDcast I feel like they DID write last episode like he was dead. But there's just no way anyone was going to believe that Pedro's character would be killed off 2/3 of the way through the season. At least that's the sense I get from my non game playing friends. One of them even said that if it had been Tommy that took her and got that injury he would have have thought he was dead for sure. But to him it just didn't make sense to kill off a character played by such a famous actor with so much time left in the season

They did it in Game of thrones To me personally that argument is really weak, since the game was written 10 years ago for a different actor in a video game. The story was already done so I don’t see why casting Pedro Pascal matters in this case

Between the heartwarming cute moments showcasing Ellie and Riley finally being able to act like kids again for once, if only for a little while...... only to rip it all away again for the seventh time in a row (damn you, show), this never ending River of tragedy that follows Ellie is emblematic of not just the shows central theme but why Ellie continues to fight, to carry on. It showcases her and Riley on opposite sides of an ideological, real and tribalistic conflict before they lay down their arms and come together to just be close for a little while because they're each others purpose in this moment; a fascinating parallel to the Bill and Frank love story and why it matters greatly when Ellie continues to lose and lose. And now that she does have someone who looks after her, who she can depend on, who matters to them, she’ll be damned if she loses them again. For Riley’s sake and everyone else who died, Ellie will finish this journey……even if it kills her.

I concur with the opinion on Joel's not-death. Even in the game, it was hard to convince everyone his life may have been lost, bit, the aesthetics of the appearance of Ellie now being alone was kinda special, maybe important. 11:20 To be honest, Riley's idea of going to the mall wasn't very good, but the best idea of the whole show still came from Kathleen, when she preferred to go after a single person instead of strategically dealing with the problem of the countless infected under the city, that already tried to break the ground and later overran the whole city. :D

My two cents as a gamer who loves both games. Awesome series! Better than most of the other video game adaptations we've had. Didn't like pedro and bella at first, but they grew on me especially Bella. I know Pedro's skills from GOT, Mando and Narcos. I only knew Bella as Lady Mormont. She is a great Ellie, not perfect, but still amazing. I'd rather have a great actress like her, than someone who looks like Ellie but sucks at acting. My only nitpicks are the lack of action and infected interactions. I understand that at its core TLOU is Joel and Ellie's bond throughout their journey, but I feel like a few more infected action sequences would have benefitted the show. Also maybe doing the original 10 episodes or longer runtimes. Other than that, awesome show! Best video game series adaptation we've had compared to MK, Halo and the rest

To, right there with you on a couple things. I still don't agree with their casting for the roles, BUT, no one can deny that they are doing a wonderful job being those two people. Like with the changes and cuts, I WANTED the game, damn it. However, what we did get is spectacular, no cap. A perfect example of not liking the way a thing is, but loving the thing, too. I really agree with your words on dealing with the Infected. By now, in game, you've seen/killed/ran from dozens of Totally Not Zombies. The storytelling is fantastic, buuuut.....where's the hand to hand combat, and trap use, and sneaking past Clickers. Darn stupid HBO, making something I love but have to complain about anyway....

The infected 100%. Doesn't even need to be action since fighting them lead to more coming at you. Having tense moments or even some struggles getting away would remind you that 'hey this world is really dangerous so much so people shoot you on site for a scratch'. Building up a romance between two friends in an entire episode of a 9 title series, in which we know the end-result of feels like an over-indulgant way of portraying Joel's important to Ellie. I always hate when shows leave off a cliffhanger to only then spend the entire next episode about character development. This entire DLC arc could have been used in season 2 or scattered over small flashbacks throughout the season, even at the start when Marlene talks about Riley (while also make Tess' death have even more meaning). At episode 7 it feels like pulling nails out of a board when we've already had an entire episode dedicated to a flashback romance tragedy (as great as it was). If they spent a third of this episode(or even a fourth) connecting the mall events to the Fireflies and Riley's death and the conversation about the gun in episode 4 this would have been a much more impactful episode. It would have given a ton more depth to her desperation to save Joel and the dots connecting the story overall.

It's just my opinion, doesn't have to be anyone else's, but the Ellie character in the TV show is more of an early 20s criminal than a 14 year old spunky teen in the video game. Not right or wrong, but the character has a lot of changes, no matter how often the writers say "she's 14"..

@@kevinscottbailey8335 Yes and no. This episode is without a doubt the worst of the series. I don't understand the point of spending an entire episode derailing the plot for another flashback romance. Episode 3 was much more impactful because they showed the ending to that story. This is like jumping into a fever dream half-way and then getting out before you see the ending. They've already established what happened to Riley and Ellie throughout the series, so why spend an entire episode building up a romance we know is gonna end with one of them dead - again. If this was an 16-episode series I wouldn't have minded this episode at all. But when the season already is so short it feels like someone should have stepped in and said, "We can use this in season 2 instead." Unlike the game, it would be weird for a TV show to have this in some stand-alone episode like it is in the game as an DLC. It would have no context whatsoever and it would be just a disappointing episode overall. This episode blends the original story with that of a DLC and makes it work. I agree with Eternity I actually cut out a part of the video where I say that I think Riley’s actress wasn’t as strong as Bella and that was a shame. Bella is turning corny by-the-numbers cliche dialogue in some scenes. Picture what the script would look like for the scene where Riley sneaks into Ellie’s room and you can see the writing in kinda just whatever, but Bella makes it feel authentic the way he hisses at the end of words, her posture, her choices for eye contact, her smiles feel so bright and genuine when Ellie is happy. Bella is a genuinely incredible actress if this is any indication, and until the final scene, I was disappointed that they couldn’t find a scene partner that was QUITE as talented for Bella to bounce off. But it worked out where it counted.
