Let's not lie, woke is a thing, though. Woke is the very obnoxious and on the nose social progressive messaging, generally done in a way to alienate a specific demographic (White men or White Christian men), while still needing this audience to help the movie break even. Why are you gaslighting?

Yep, it's basically a buzzword that triggers certain types of online circles into throwing a hissy fit. @@smithsunleashed The hate the movie received has nothing to do with the all female lead characters. The issue is the villainization of the majority audience for superhero movies, aka the male audience. How can you antagonize the people you need to have your movie break even by telling them that, if they fail to feel interested in the movie, they're just anti-women? However, you make sure not to urge women into watching the mvmovie because you know they're already not interested. That's the hypocrisy which makes the flop especially deserved and earned.

I don't think diversity is really the problem but how some studios choose to go about their diversity that causes the political discourse online. If a studio makes an original character with a personality that doesn't completely revolve around their identity be it their gender, race or sexuality I don't think many people are gonna take issue with it even if the movie or show the character is in ends up being bad. Lots of people would probably agree that Strange World, Raya & The Last Dragon & WISH were mediocre at best but I've very rarely if ever seen anyone complain about the race, sexuality or gender of the characters in those films. Plus the fact that the Spider-Verse films have done so well I think also proves that general audiences don't have a problem with diversity but how it's executed and if the movie itself is actually good. Miles Morales isn't a race swapped Spider-Man, his personality doesn't revolve around his race, he's just a well written character that happens to be black & Hispanic. I think this is also a reason many people liked Lilo & Stitch, The Emperors New Groove, Alien, Kill Bill, The PowerPuff Girls, The Proud Family, Nemona & Static Shock. They were good movies/shows with original characters that weren't reduced down to just being the black person or the woman or the Lgbtqia person. I think this also applies to how a movie chooses to go about it's political messaging as well. I think some films focus more on their message than actually being entertaining and it comes across as more of a preachy lecture first and foremost than a entertaining film/show. That being said politics are divisive in nature but I definitely think at the very least if a film is more subtle and doesn't feel the need to be blunt about it's messaging it'll definitely cause less controversy. Us and Get Out are perfect examples of films that had messages but they weren't preachy as opposed to something like She-Hulk, Bros or Proud Family Louder & Prouder.

I'd also add avatar the last airbender as one of the "diversity" shows that people generally like. It has a lot of "woke" themes in it by definition. It's very anti colonialism and anti empirialist, it's pro environmentalism, the entire world is based around various Asian and Native American cultures, there's not a single white person in the entire franchise, it has several representation for people with disabilities (one of the most powerful benders in the series is literally a 12 year old blind girl) and it's VERY direct with it's support for feminism. Heck, there's even one episode where Katara straight up challenges the patriarchy of the northern water tribe. And yet avatar is a widely liked by everyone, even the "anti-woke" people. I'm not saying misogyny, racism, etc. don't exist in the world. Far from it, actually. But diversity and "woke" themes can actually be well-received as long as the execution is done right.

The biggest issue with the MCU is that they never gave the audience time to miss them. I was 10 in 2008 when the first Iron Man came out and ever since then, I watched every film in the Infinity Saga on opening weekend because there was a novelty factor to the idea of a shared universe. By the time Endgame was done, that novelty was gone. The excitement of seeing the Avengers together was fulfilled and what interesting threat can you really have after Thanos tried to wipe out the entire universe? They should have taken a break, at least 3 years without a film or streaming show. Then gradually introduce phase 4 instead of spamming the audience with subpar content. Even as a strong MCU fan, phase 4 and 5 have been too much for me, I still haven't watched half the things they've put on Disney Plus because it feels like homework, whereas before, during the Infinity Saga, each new film felt like it was building to something. Now Marvel just feels aimless.

I think there’s nuance in all this. A lot of movies that “bomb” are because the story isn’t there, the movie is almost laughably bad, and a general lack of care. I think it’s fine for movies to have a message to convey, but it needs to be done in a way that isn’t insulting to audiences and in subtlety. People wanna go to the movies to feel something, to escape, to be entertained. This is also what happens when you have too many corporate heads making decisions and not to the creatives who actually know what the hell to do.

Personally, I don’t think the problem is necessarily woke-ness, but the forced woke-ness to fit a political agenda. Disney had gotten criticism for years for white-washing, as well as putting female characters in their traditional roles. They seek to break out of that, though they seem to lose their mark in the process. Being woke isn’t the problem, it’s the whole ‘look at me, I’m not racist’ narrative that Disney seems to be pushing. Though considering the Disney legacy, I don’t know that I’d call it a downfall so much as a significant stumble, and taken the right steps, I do think they could recover. We will see

Unpopular ish opinion but I feel like yes "go woke go broke" does play a factor to a certain degree is to why some films are in decline mostly from Disney due to forced diversity (Disney had been losing tones of money even before the boycott as well). Let's be honest, the forced diversity and forced political messaging in films are ruining storytelling narrative. Many Marvel fanatics aren't even hyped for any Marvel films these past few years anymore due to how horrible the recent Marvel films are. We can also point out that some animated films had such bad promotion hence why they flopped in the box office as well. So in a nutshell, Script writers need to stop being lazy (and stop using AI as well) and start actually write better stories instead of focusing on political messaging like how things were back in the day while also the crew need to start doing better film promotions especially in the animated films. People are sick and tired of politics being inserted for no reason in films that they are not even bothered going to the cinema anymore. The last film last year that really got me super hyped was Super Mario and honestly it was the best film I have watched that year.

Elemental brought in a world wide box office of almost 500 million, which ought to be considered a solid success, not record breaking, but certainly it should have been considered a 'win'. Back in the 2000s and most of the 2010s popular mainstream movies in major part represented something and were really unique not focusing solely on making the film politically correct like movie producers (in West) do now. Also, you didn't see all the time remakes of all the classics from the previous decades. Worst part is that it not only applies to movie industry nowadays but also to music. Sure, there were often samples indoctrinated to the 2000s hits but producers still could've made these songs unique when today...well, you have Ava Max and Bebe Rexha sampling the shit out of the old songs but as a result they create only a wallmart version of something that was once great. US entertainment industry went from excellence to a state worse than superficial mediocrity and it hurts me to say, but golden age of when US was a trendsetter and "American Dream" are gone. People don't even care about top Billboard songs anymore, cause they hit the top because of an artist's obsessive fandoms mostly these days, not becase the song is a widely known hit per se. People don't care about new Ariana Grande, Drake or Beyoncè's #1 hits, only their fandoms. I'm not even starting with how Netflix and Disney went downhill. Someone wrote well that today indie music and independent movies that aren't mainstream shine the most and are of best quality and capability of conveying emotion or something original. Cause people today are sick of mainstream music and movies that are just simple recycling (worse) products copying the 80s-10s art.

First, neat change of pace in your normal content. Second, I think novelty is the main reason the movie examples you gave were so successful at the box office with the exception of Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer would have done well regardless of being release alongside Barbie because Christopher Nolan as a director has draw power on his own, and that isn't even factoring in the cast of the film. Marvel and Disney as a whole are doing bad because they've lost the novelty of their releases. Even non-comic fans remember how monumental the first Avengers was because of the buildup of seeing multiple IPs come together in a single movie. From there we simply followed the overarching narrative to Endgame, and now that the story is over only the diehard fans are still pursuing the current phase.

It doesn't matter what reason Avatar is being watched. The first film was mocked for being pretensious and why on earth is it the most watched film only for the sequel to come out 10+ years later and still be highly successful. The last time that happened was Aliens and T2.

If the stories were better and they had fewer movies/characters to focus on, I don't think "woke" complaints would be a thing (aside from the bitter crowd obviously). It's been 5 years since Endgame and we STILL don't have an Avengers movie. The past phases had less and it was an event to actually see them team up. MCU Phase 1 would have had an Avengers movie by now, not just endless content. We don't even have main characters to fall back on. Phase 1 had Tony & Steve as the leaders, Nick Fury/SHIELD would pop up to tease a bigger story. So everyone could pick which movies to watch before they watched the Avengers movies.

Hunger Games was a box office bomb lmao, why are you including the fact it cost $300 Mil? That’s idiotic and covers up the fact the film is a financial bomb

Great video. I just hope Disney makes a good comeback but Moana 2 is not very convincing. I think Inside out 2 is gonna be good for pixar, pixar has not completely fallen off but disney animation has since Encanto, and Encanto was bigger on Disney+.

yeah honest you missed me with this one. the past few years of diversity movies have been a colossal failure for disney, with few exceptions. even Little Mermaid underperformed relative to its budget. And as other commentors have explained, the diversity is often pulled off terribly, not to mention some of the films are just flat out bad--poor writing, CGI, unbearable dialogue, etc.

Seems like all the sucessful movies had white leads... even the animated ones 😮

Your video proves your a hypocrite. Barbie made money because people chose poorly over Mario and five nights at Freddy’s. Also check rotten tomatoes for the top audience score on that woke Barbie movie compared to FNAF, Mario, and Oppenheimer(then come back to me on that)

To everyone thats saying being woke means being aware of social issues, #1 being aware of social issues just means your competent and smart, being woke means your just an angry person pushing an angry agenda. Sorry to say🤷🏾‍♂️.

I’m sorry but what does “being woke” have to do with anything you are talking about in this video? The State of the MCU has nothing to do with the character portrayal or racial diversity, and everything to do with oversaturation and quantity>quality. You are not talking about sociopolitical issues as far as black, brown, or non-white people, so your title is mere speculation about a point you never make. And for one, as a black man, you should not be contributing to this, “Woke = Bad” propaganda. Anything for clicks nowadays i guess.

Did you even watch the entire video? or you type this angry paragraph for nothing? Because I certainly talk about the Go Broke, Go Woke Narrative and show examples that go against it. // And “woke=bad” that’s not my stance (and u would know that if u watched the full video) but even if it was don’t tell me what i should or shouldn’t be doing as a black man. Black people are not a monolith.
