I'm a newspaper editor, and for almost 20 years I've had to work with freelance and sometimes in-house photographers who often have camera gear costing tens of thousands, have usually qualified in some course or other - and take appalling, rubbish photos with no flair or skill, and often with the focus off etc. Just appalling, basic shots. The camera is important, sure - but The Eye is all-important; you either know what a good shot is, or how to frame and fake one, or you don't. No amount of training will give you what you don't already have - you could give me a thousand singing lessons, but I'll still not be top of the charts anywhere. As such, most of these cameras on phones are great - I'm trading up from Pixel 6 Pro to 7 Pro, tonight - and are more than usable for print and other projects IF you have any skill with a camera anyway, especially The Eye.

OMG Alex, this is the most in-depth look at this from an all-day everyday photography perspective. I am a totally non-professional hobby photographer having a Sony ZV-1 point-and-shoot camera, too. I just wanna "get rid of it" as I prefer doing everything on a phone which I have on me all the time anyway. I tend not to take the camera out of my pocket and if one phone can convience me, I'll probably sell it.

Just to note, the 2x on the pixel 7 is a crop of the 1x sensor. It's not a digital zoom but a crop of the sensor capturing the full image in the 2x frame. I think it's equivalent to 9.x mps. That would explain the higher quality of the images from this 2x option. When you go beyond 2x but below 5x, the 5x telephoto lens is used to add detail to the portion of the image that the 5x FOV covers.

Loved your video and how you put time in those tests. I was especially surprised with some of the neat shots. Some direct shots look so artsy which gives the Pixel a unique flavor to their cameras. Pixel 7 pro looks great and I've heard about the improvements especially over the buggy Pixel 6 pro but I will still wait for the 8 pro. Fortunately, I'm one of the rear few who has never experienced any bug in my 6 Pro. The cameras are great for my usage and I don't really care about the slightly "slower" Fingerprint reader. From what I can see the cameras in the 7 Pro are a little more refined than the 6 Pro but not by so much especially for how I use it. I guess phone cameras are generally so good these days that one doesn't really need to upgrade their phones every year. I would really like it if they give a fully Manual mode though. Imagine manual mode like the xperia phones with the neat Pixel features and computational photography. That would be a dream phone camera.

Thx for your review. As the 50MP main is equivalent to a 25mm lens, the 5X tele is roughly equal to a 125mm lens, not a 230mm lens as you said (at about 4:39 in your video). That would require more like a 9X tele.

You should switch to astrophotography mode for good image of moon I think ( or set exposure to max in nighttime quick settings ) .From what I understand the Pixel takes multiple exposures over 4 minutes and autostacks those pictures into the "end result " .Makes me wonder if you can still edit the raw files (used for the autostack) in LR or in a dedicated stacking program . I agree though : would be better if they opened up the camera app completely so you can manually set ISO and shutterspeed

I feel like an algorithm was run that determined enough people who want an optical 2X will bite the bullet and go with a P7P over a P7, thus improving profitability. It worked on me, but I'm easy. I'm trying to figure out whether I should move my wife from her 4XL (which does have a 2X optical) to a P7 or a P7 Pro. It's really bad they didn't add any manual/PRO mode for the camera. Fine, people mostly use phones to point and shoot, but if I wanted to catch a moving object (car, bike) or a moving bird, it's impossible to have a correct focus, unless AI recognizes it and adjusts the shutter speed accordingly. After all, we can't bring with us a DSLR camera every day, so a phone should have a PRO mode.
@azvisuals2 жыл бұрын
I agree, a pro mode would really seal the deal! They did add the action pan modes that allow the AI to capture moving subjects like cars and blur the background like a traditional panning shot

Im coming from a LG V60 witch has superb manual control's the Auto option is not always that great but with manual im able to make very nice shots especially at night while using a stand i can still force 50iso reducing the grain a lot. I preordered the Pixel 7 Pro thinking it would have a manual camera option in 2022. LG was one of the first or the first with the G4 it was a game changer for me. Maybe i will cancel my order and switch to a different brand that does offer the manual option. Like you showed with the Rusty car its sometimes very hard to get the shot you want if the light conditions are not ideal with manual you can get very close if you put in the extra time. i really dont get why google does not offer this while a lot of other big brands do 😢 Are you really missing the Manual mode compared to other phones that have it? or is the processing that google does that good that you dont miss it? For example the night shots i think with a manual mode and a tripod you can make it was sharper forcing low ISO and controlling the shutter speed. and the White balance controls in kelvin would also be very nice but at least there is a slider
@Vasharan2 жыл бұрын
I'm coming from the opposite end of the spectrum. 30 years of shooting with Leica, Canon and Panasonic cameras, and I'm really appreciating the simplicity of just capturing the moment with the Pixel 7 Pro. 8-9 times out of 10, the Pixel does as well or better than I would in A or M mode, and the immediacy of shooting as well as having full situational awareness means I'm catching more 'moments' than I would through a viewfinder or having to fiddle with dials. I actually bought the P7P instead of a Fuji X-H2S for an upcoming trip. And while the Fuji would get better shots in some edge cases (it's really hard to beat how convenient and seamless Google's Night Shot is, though), not having to lug a system camera around or worry about getting robbed of a fancy camera will make my holiday experience 100x better. My last phone photographic experiment was with a nokia 9 Pureview, and while it can take some very impressive shots, the processing speed was painful, and the low light performance was pretty bad. I would say this current gen of high end camera phones (P7P, iPhone 14 Pro, S22 Ultra, Xiaomi 12S Ultra) have finally nailed portable and computational photography, at least for non-professional use.
@Nelthalin2 жыл бұрын
@@Vasharan I do agree on that. I did the same with my LG phones. Most of. The time I still shoot auto and only adjust over saturation if that happens. But certain shots do not look good color / exposure wise or are to grainy and then auto mode is there to improve the picture quite a bit. It would be so nice to have it available if you need it in the edge cases. I was now looking into the Xperia 1 IV that can do both but the auto mode results are different to what Google shows. Dynamic range is smaller but colors are natural. But it does have dslr like controls and a shutter button. It also has a real 3.5 - 5.2x optical zoom. It also still has a microsd slot and 3.5 jack and real front facing dual speakers. It is a bit more expensive. But I think they are underrated just like LG phones where. Now I do understand most people just want point an click but they go for apple, Samsung or cheap options from xiaomi anyway.
@Vasharan2 жыл бұрын
@@Nelthalin I can certainly understand edge cases. I'm surprised that there aren't more camera apps that unlock manual settings that Google doesn't, like Filmic Pro does for videos, or how my DJI app lets me rack focus and zoom with the scroll wheel on the gimbal. Seems like there would be a market for that, and it's just a software fix. Sony's been pretty inconsistent in the smartphone game, and they don't have the carrier presence that Samsung and Apple do (fairly important in the States). They also disappeared from the smartphone race for a while and have only recently returned with competitive products. I had an old Experia Z3 compact that I decently liked, as nobody was making small phones at the time, but I've finally embraced the big phones that the market has moved on to. It was a pretty phone with good battery life and one of the early IP6x8 waterproof phones, the software was fairly unremarkable and security updates were slow, but it did phone stuff o̶k̶a̶y̶* and it did smart stuff okay, I guess. I hear their new phones are pretty nice, though. * Actually, scratch that. I just remembered that it had terrible voice call quality, to the point that people on the other end could barely hear me. So -1 points to G̶r̶y̶f̶f̶y̶n̶d̶o̶r̶ the Z3.

As a semi knowledgeable photographer, i am by no means claiming to be an expert photographer, But I did take a photography class in high school. Buying the pixel 7 pro was a good decision, having gone from a iPhone to Android phone was heart breaking for my apple obsession. But when i got into not only the sofware but the hardware, i fell in love... Goodbye apple never wanna see ya again For a bit of a critique on pixel, the 7 pro; the videos are not as good as Apple. But the still photos are absolutely spectacular for a smartphone. 100% beat Apple on still photos, not on videos. The videos would be just as good if the switching between lenses on the camera as soft wasn't so choppy. I personally like bragging with my family about my phone and how good it is versus their Apple phones. But I want to clarify at different phone brands and different phones are meant for different people. I took into consideration what I wanted from a phone and got a phone I needed, for me that is the pixel 7 pro. For others I might be the iPhone 15 pro that might be the iPhone SE it might be a Samsung S3 Plus ultra whatever it's called, you not hate on Apple or I do not hit on a Samsung I just feel like for myself that this is the best phone for me. Do not want to start a war over phones

Thank you for the review. I've just one question: so a pro mode isn't available on the 7 pro? It sounds crazy, I need to change the settings.. I'm going to change a very well done Huawei P20 pro and I was considering the pixel over the iPhone 14 pro mainly for money reasons.. What do you think is really the best smartphone for photographers? Could be a fully automatic one? Which one do you suggest me, maybe s22 ultra or the iPhone 14 pro or maybe the pixel 7 pro itself? Thank you so much, I'll really appreciate your answer, I know I'm asking for the million dollar question..

Unfortunately the pixel doesn't have a pro mode so if manual controls are important maybe the s22u is more fitting. Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to test the iphone 14 so can't speak to that, but all of the reviews seem to really favor the image and video qualities. Ultimately I think it's more of an android vs iphone question since the rest of the phone experience is also very important to consider

So far the images still don't look super consistent. Some of them will look amazing while other times it will need some adjustments

Sadly im really unhappy with the extreme oversharpening and HDR bs my P7 does. Like i love everything about this phone except the post processing 😭
