This is an amazing Tarantula. Are they aggressive? And do they have any venom?
@makesomethinginteresting10 жыл бұрын
This is one of the more aggressive genera in the hobby. However, this particular Poecilotheria species is known to be extremely skittish and is very light sensitive. All tarantulas have venom. Without it, they wouldn't be able to kill and digest the insect they just caught. This is what you would call an "Old World" (African, Asian, Australian etc..,) tarantula. Most New World(North and South America) tarantulas are more docile, and would rather run than pick a fight. They also rely on their urticating hairs, another form of defense, which the "Old World" tarantulas lack. Since "Old World" tarantulas lack of urticating hairs(fiberglass like structure that buries into the skin, very irritating to the skin, eyes, and lungs), they make up for it with extremely potent venom. Lets just put it this way: You would be in bed with symptoms like nausea, cramps, sweating, swelling, headache and overall very uncomfortable fast heart palpitations. Bite reports have described a burning feeling at the bite site, like you just touched the stove. If you treat this tarantula with respect, nothing should happen. This is a tarantula I would never consider handling. Thanks for watching!
@Aegis_193410 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I never meant about handling the spider, but I love the tip about handling as well. It was very informative, and I liked the description of the venom effects. :D

How is Australia 'Old World'? Europeans officially got there in 1770, whereas your New World was officially reached by us in 1492. We have tarantulas in Europe too, the Old Continent... Oldest World. They get their name from Taranto in Italy. The Romans had a myth about the venom of the tarantula driving you mad with desire for the opposite sex. Yet, you leave Europe out? New World- the Americas... Old World, Australia? What are you on?

+Stephen Gallagher It's just a term used in the science world because The Americas were called the 'New World' by Europeans migrating there for pastures new, Eventually creating a new country. Tarantulas native to the Americas have different characteristics to every other type, So that's why New World and Old World.

I am planning to get one of this, but I have never had a Tarantulas before, do you mind share some information with me? In terms of what kind of "case" or "cage" what ever you call it, and what to feed them. Thank you. And great video.
@makesomethinginteresting9 жыл бұрын
I strongly advise to do thorough research before buying ANY pet. That said, this tarantula is not for beginners, and if you do decide to buy it, know it is a steep learning curve if you never had any tarantulas. I would first buy a less aggressive/slower species such as Avicularia, and once you feel comfortable then you can move on to these 'Old World' tarantulas. This one has a medically signifigant bite, which means you would have cramps/nausea/sweating/swelling/vomiting and more if it bit you. Definitly check out some videos of when a Poecilotheria Ornata bit tarantulaguy1976.. He is a grown man, and he was in significant pain and had to go to the hospital. If you got bit and are allergic to this particular venom, it can mean death. 'Old World' tarantulas have strong venom due to lack or other defense mechanisms such as urticating hairs. To answer your questions, this tarantula is an 'arboreal' tarantula; which means that it lives high in the trees. The cage would have to be taller than it is wide. Cages size vary, Spiderlings need smaller cages with smaller airholes and you would need to buy a piece of cork bark tube that it can hide in such as shown in the video. All tarantulas are light sensitive, but this one is more than others I have. I rarely see it during the day unless it is hungry. You can feed it crickets or superworms(buying them from local pet stores), depending on its size. I strongly advise 'training' on other tarantulas first, since rehousing might be a problem once it becomes bigger. You can buy this for your first tarantula if you want, but I wouldn't recommend it.. If this got loose in your house it would become a signifigant problem, especially if you have children around. Thanks for watching!

pstarus All those "ornamental" tarantulas are very venomous aren't they ? There is another one that is more yellow colored that I've seen and I think they are very venomous also. I really like the look of these. I've never owned one but I have two of the most venomous scorpions in the world -- Leiurus Nasheri(Close relative of the Deathstalker) male and a Androctonus Mauritanicus(Moroccan Fat Tail) female. Scorpions are very different than T's for sure but more venomous. I must say, like tarantulas, scorpions are "very different" from each other too. The Leiurus Nasheri just sits until he's hungry and then he's very agitated and will strike anything, the Moroccan fat tail, being a female, she is veeery agressive all the time and will strike at anything. I guess that's why this species and the A. Crassicauda have killed the most people in the world. They can also hang upside down, unlike most scorpions. She is also the fastest scorpion that I've ever seen but she has a personality like no other. Cheers

Online is the best bet but a pet store might have it too. These are called cork bark tubes, prices vary based on shape and size. Overall, cork bark tubes are excellent for a pets needs due to being mold resistant.

It's a cork bark tube. Plenty of sites sell them online, or you can go to a pet store but that's a more expensive option. It is great not only for the natural environment it provides, but also because it doesn't get moldy or rot like other materials.
@hannahnicole80615 жыл бұрын
How much does it cost for one of these beauties? Planning on getting one myself
@makesomethinginteresting5 жыл бұрын
Hannah Nicole Cost will depend on several factors. These factors include sex of the tarantula, size, which dealer, and more. Do you want the cheapest one possible? Try finding a forum such as arachnoboards where breeders speacialize in these things. Online dealers are also good but might price them higher. Also, do you want to watch your tarantula grow or do you want to buy one that is already an adult? These are all factors that will play into the cost. A mature female Poecilotheria Metallica will cost several hundred dollars(seen prices in excess of $500 a few years back, could be more or less now), while an unsexed spiderling might cost less than a hundred. Regardless of cost, do your research before you commit to getting one of these. Don't just get it because it is pretty. It is extremely fast and has a nasty bite if you were to get bit. If you have no experience with other tarantulas I would "train" up on other T's first just due to the fact that these are lightning fast. Rehousing once they get bigger might be an issue if you are not prepared. Thanks for watching!
@myblasphemouslife90525 жыл бұрын
Have you ever kept any species of tarantula before? Because when most people buy a Poecilotheria Metallica, it is on a impulse and they don’t know what they are getting themselves into.

I said 'one of'. Symptoms include severe pain, (sometimes for several days) shortness of breath, muscle spasm/cramps, (also known to last several days in severe cases) nausea, dizziness, headaches etc. P. Metallicas tend to be skittish rather than aggressive, but in my opinion, handling one is not worth the risk.

Depends what you mean. No tarantulas or spider are 'poisonous' but they are venomous. This particular species has some of the most painful venom of all tarantulas. They aren't typically aggressive but they are quite nervous and can move very quickly when they feel threatened.
