There is evidence that the Gopro engineers originally wanted to put in a good microphone but instead you find two cheap capsules instead. I can only assume it was a cost cutting measure. I almost feel personally insulted by how bad the product is.

You say that because you proceed from an incorrect premise -- that audio is important to video manufactures, its not. Camera manufactures -- ALL camera manufactures -- put 95% of their efforts into the video. Audio get the other 5%. You're buying a video camera, not an audio recorder.

Yea if you don't need an action camera just get a normal one. Peopl normally get gopro for extreme stuff that mirror less can't do. You can't really compare these 2 cams they are built for diff purpose. Personally I felt thta go pro 8 was a waste of money especially since they release this hero9 which is wya btr. Hero 9 is now worth and close to perfect. I would buy the hero 9 and I think it would still be in the game after 10 years. But I don't have the money😂😂

Great time for photography. I normally shoot canon full frame for weddings but enjoyed my m50 for light travel. Transitioning to an RP for full frame sensor but mirrorless form factor. And like 8 batteries 😂 I wonder if this media mod mic is even a real shotgun mic. I know GP8 media mod isn’t even a shotgun mic in there. Interchangeable / replaceable lens is welcome. If the GOPro subscription really does replace your GOPro if damaged it’s definitely worth the price if that is in fact the case. When I buy new cameras I try to get warranty for it too.

OK folks while I might not be the best of audio people I can suggest this. I am going to speculate that while the sound directly from the Mod Mic sounds tinny and worse than what comes directly from the GoPro (the stock audio probably is boosted to allow "warmer" sounding audio). It's probably being processed correctly through the GoPro so you can boost and modify it in Post. Think of the audio coming from the "Better" and specific mic is allowing better audio to be processed for after the fact. Remember different mics are designed to pick up specific audio for specific reasons. Kinda like the analogy how a shotgun and a rifle still do the same thing but the projectiles that come from it are designed to get different results. Make sense???

With the media mod still out of stock, go pro did something very questionable. The new firmware update has removed the audio input options, so you can no longer use the mic adapter for an external mic. Support says they’re putting together another update to fix the input / output issue.

Just go my go pro 9 and mic adapter! Luckily I came across post of people saying there go pro’s don’t work with the adapter after updating! And my go pro didn’t get updated before they shipped it just gonna keep my 9 with the firmware it came with!

Same here. I guess they needed it to make up for the horizon levelling with the Max Lens mod.. The GoPro still does better low light than the DJI Osmo action. Been waiting for an update to that and the Osmo Pocket. Hope they come out with them soon. I was about to get an Osmo Action over the Hero 8 due to the front screen but the Hero 9 answers that with a front screen of their own. If DJI comes out with a good low light performing one and still keep their filter attachment and lower price point, it will definitely eat GoPro's market share even more.

I just got a gopro 9 and had to update plus I have a media mod. I'm not seeing any options to switch from front to rear mic. Were you able to switch or is it automatic? I'm using an external mic as well, but when I unplugged it for a shot and was going to use media mod mic I didn't see where I could switch it.

I found the media mod to be pretty good but for some reason when I have it on, it goes straight to a Media Mod setup and won't let me change it to anything other than 2.7k. I don't have this issue if I don't use the mod...strange.

May I ask as I work a lot in the garden with it and those openings seem to have dust / soil: how would you recommend to clean that is safe for the electronics please 😇 Also, the drain microphone (designed to drain water that is not supposed to be a door/latch): Unfortunately as a beginner user of the device it was tried to be opened and consequently broke: How would you try to fix that? As last, Is the microphone behind that door giving a real microphone function? I know a problem has a solution ;)

For the door, you could perhaps glue it back on very carefully. And if your equipment gets dusty. Compressed air can get the most of it out. Then what I do is either use Q-tips or a soft cloth to get all the stuck on dirt sometimes all dampen it a little bit if need be

The thing is that the media mod is not needed to attach an external mic, but it is a nice setup. It would take a cage and an audio adapter to accomplish a similar setup.

Well, I bought the Gopro 9 and I didn't manage to add external mic using the classic Gopro mic adapter. Another disappointment is the USB-C port is not outputting video signal. It seems we are stuck with Media Mod which is not to be found in any store. Just like Media Mod for Gopro 8.
