As an asian, I can fully understand why Akira just nodded and kept quiet when Gordon was scolding him, it was a way to show respect. In most asian countries, nodding back when being scolded, especially if the one scolding you is an elderly, is a sign of respect. He kept his composure, he looked like he had a lot to say but he didn't.

Sorry but I think anxiety is the main reason. I feel Akira because I struggle with that too. When you meet someone with a completely different wavelength, you struggle to keep up and your mind goes completely blank. On top of that, he is in a difficult spot. And his wife? Instead of showing support, his wife interrupts him and put him down furtherf. No way he wouldn't shut down completely.

I can actually understand why akira just nodded his head and listened to gordon's scolding without saying anything back. In most asian households we're taught to nod, accept and agree with them since childhood, the silence is to show respect to the elders, talking back or even giving opinions is often seen as rude.

it is hard to get the full picture through a show like that AND it is unfair to judge a persons behaviour when they are on their edge and exhausted. It looks like Akira has severe depression and that is so hard on a partner. I think we do not need to talk about blame and fault here... we do that too often as human beings when things are more complex. Certain behaviors are a problem, absolutely. A person 100%? feels like unfair bashing. Did you also see how in need she was for his emotions? And how she cheered him on when he showed them? This is a long story and she certainly picked up some behaviors while he was unavailable, yeah, but that is not necessarily her identity, her complete character.

The biggest problem is his wife. Not that she doesn't support him, she destroyed him mentally. See how Akira has changed back to his old self, he got his passion back, energized, motivated, corrected his little mistake, he smiled and happy but then Lisa just sitting there, waited her chance for him to make a mistake and blame him. See how she said she think he doesn't work hard enough and "worried" about he is not gonna ever be the chef that he should be? that is a legit toxic and strong negative thought which can cause him to demotivated and feel bad. Akira didn't blame her anything or angry at her at all as he truly loved his family. A true gentleman he is. Lastly, his children's are beautiful and kind hearted.

I am baffled why they married, he is clearly a traditional Japanese man which neither Gordon or his wife understand. He cannot believe she would shame him like that in front of Gordon and the TV, while Gordon doesn't understand you cannot talk so bluntly to Japanese people. His wife sucked the life out of him, man of such culture doesn't know how to react to a bitchy wife when such expressions are frowned upon and never discussed in private let alone public. Not a healthy culture IMO but it is what it is and you gotta respect it.

@@Freaky_Lemonade No. He's saying that Akira's behaviour i.e being non-confrontational when being scolded is typical of ppl who are born and raised in Japan. Conventionally, it's not a good thing to have an "in-your-face" attitude in Japan so Akira probably did not say anything when he was scolded by Gordon about his work, particularly since there was merit in the criticism. Also, in Japanese work culture, when you are criticised that much for your work (particularly in the service industry where Japan prides itself in having great customer service) it can be seen as shameful so I can understand why he is very quiet and a little flustered when Gordon is screaming at him. But this one really touched me. Ended up crying with the family. You can just tell the father was truly lost, truly had given up and carried alot of feelings of guilt and feeling like a failure. He takes himself away from his family because he truly is embarrassed. The change in him was sooooo beautiful to watch, his smile is lovely and its like it never went away after that talk and all of chefs gifts and the renovation etc etc. You can tell he's a very bubbly, kind, goofy ,sweet soul. Uhhhh when he was behind the sushi bar it was like he was at home. Absolutely loved it. I sincerely hope the restaurant is still doing well til this day Bless them all, and Ramsay as always 🙏🏾 ❤️

For anyone curious; unfortunately, Sushi Ko is now closed. They closed on the 8th of August, 2009. A year or so before the episode even got to air. Lisa says the relaunch may have come a bit too late and the business was already going under. Sammy's blog had a rather large statement on it but some key points are how the areas economy may have something to do with it and how the entire family went from incredibly excited to devastated as the closure happened mere months after the episode was wrapped. A true shame. Wherever Akira, Lisa, Sammy and Hana are today I wish them the best of luck. (Source: Reality TV Revisited and Sammy's blog) *Edits for formatting

I remember that one time a bunch of white people naked at the top of Mount Kinabalu. Soon after, there is earth-quake and it destroy they house near that mountain.
