I can actually understand why akira just nodded his head and listened to gordon's scolding without saying anything back. In most asian households we're taught to nod, accept and agree with them since childhood, the silence is to show respect to the elders, talking back or even giving opinions is often seen as rude.

As an asian, I can fully understand why Akira just nodded and kept quiet when Gordon was scolding him, it was a way to show respect. In most asian countries, nodding back when being scolded, especially if the one scolding you is an elderly, is a sign of respect. He kept his composure, he looked like he had a lot to say but he didn't.

Sorry but I think anxiety is the main reason. I feel Akira because I struggle with that too. When you meet someone with a completely different wavelength, you struggle to keep up and your mind goes completely blank. On top of that, he is in a difficult spot. And his wife? Instead of showing support, his wife interrupts him and put him down furtherf. No way he wouldn't shut down completely.

The biggest problem is his wife. Not that she doesn't support him, she destroyed him mentally. See how Akira has changed back to his old self, he got his passion back, energized, motivated, corrected his little mistake, he smiled and happy but then Lisa just sitting there, waited her chance for him to make a mistake and blame him. See how she said she think he doesn't work hard enough and "worried" about he is not gonna ever be the chef that he should be? that is a legit toxic and strong negative thought which can cause him to demotivated and feel bad. Akira didn't blame her anything or angry at her at all as he truly loved his family. A true gentleman he is. Lastly, his children's are beautiful and kind hearted.

I am baffled why they married, he is clearly a traditional Japanese man which neither Gordon or his wife understand. He cannot believe she would shame him like that in front of Gordon and the TV, while Gordon doesn't understand you cannot talk so bluntly to Japanese people. His wife sucked the life out of him, man of such culture doesn't know how to react to a bitchy wife when such expressions are frowned upon and never discussed in private let alone public. Not a healthy culture IMO but it is what it is and you gotta respect it.

I totally agree and that’s why most people prefer to get married with those who share the same culture or were raised in the same environment so those type of things won’t happen and won’t affect the kids. Ignorance has no place in a long-term relationship or it will mostly end up toxic.

Conventionally, it's not a good thing to have an "in-your-face" attitude in Japan so Akira probably did not say anything when he was scolded by Gordon about his work, particularly since there was merit in the criticism. Also, in Japanese work culture, when you are criticised that much for your work (particularly in the service industry where Japan prides itself in having great customer service) it can be seen as shameful so I can understand why he is very quiet and a little flustered when Gordon is screaming at him. I love how Gordon doesn't just help a business, he helps the people. This one was especially heartbreaking because it was a family. You can tell that Akira was once a very empathetic man but he buried himself in his own failures so far that who he used to be was lost. It's quite possible that Lisa doesn't love him anymore, or at least not how she used to, but I don't believe she's anymore to blame for the state of things than he is. They are the co-leaders of the restaurant and their family. It's amazing that their kids actually stuck around and supported them so much. They clearly love their parents a lot.

Sure it was weird to see a sushi pizza, but they need to respect that. The chef asking back at Gordon regarding the hair, tells you that they don't care about their work. They are just there for the money. Of course, these are the minority, but man,i feel bad for Akira. it s clearly a breakdown of communication between different genders and cultures. Please no one are villains here. And men didn't know how to express their feelings and just being avoidant. It is cross culture. I think Akira was kind of depressed and his wife as well. They expressed in a very different way. One walked away and the other stepped in more, making the other more angry and frustrated. I do think the whole family had too much financial pressure to function normally. This can happen to any family. They needed both a practical way out and some counselling service. Hope all the best for them.

Especially for children who barely even understands their feelings to begin with. Having to supress your feelings, because "it's wrong/disrespectful to speak your mind about something", is not a good thing for a child to be enforced to learn. And imagine going around feeling like your feelings are wrong, evne though you feel those feelings for a reason. absolutely! and the son's reaction was also just what you'd expect! when he said: "that's my picture!" you can hear from his voice that he was honoured to have his photos hung up on the walls of his dad's restaurant! I love it

As an Asian myself.. I can rlly relate to Akira keeping quiet and feeling distanced from everyone else when he was overwhelmed, pretty inspiring episode imo

ApocalypseNO4 With respect, it can happen to anyone male or femal of any origin. Sadly, unless someone can identify the problem and work with the party(ies) concerend it can very easily turn into something far more tragic. It was, as you say, a very inspiring episode and I hope that all of that family have been able to continue in an upward direction. From your own point of view, based on your comment, I hope that you are seeking help if oyu are feeling excldued and/or marginalised and that you have plenty of support. You will always encounter the clever buggers who have no experience of such feelings but are able to tell you to "pull yourself together" !!

I’m not Asian so sorry if I sound offensive or like I don’t know what I’m talking about, but I don’t think it’s because of your race, your probably introverted OR you just prefer to avoid the angry.

This episode made me cry deeply. Akira is such a gentle soul and pure heart. Seeing him with his family and how in pain he was really broke me
