I can actually understand why akira just nodded his head and listened to gordon's scolding without saying anything back. In most asian households we're taught to nod, accept and agree with them since childhood, the silence is to show respect to the elders, talking back or even giving opinions is often seen as rude.

The biggest problem is his wife. Not that she doesn't support him, she destroyed him mentally. See how Akira has changed back to his old self, he got his passion back, energized, motivated, corrected his little mistake, he smiled and happy but then Lisa just sitting there, waited her chance for him to make a mistake and blame him. See how she said she think he doesn't work hard enough and "worried" about he is not gonna ever be the chef that he should be? that is a legit toxic and strong negative thought which can cause him to demotivated and feel bad. Akira didn't blame her anything or angry at her at all as he truly loved his family. A true gentleman he is. Lastly, his children's are beautiful and kind hearted.

I am baffled why they married, he is clearly a traditional Japanese man which neither Gordon or his wife understand. He cannot believe she would shame him like that in front of Gordon and the TV, while Gordon doesn't understand you cannot talk so bluntly to Japanese people. His wife sucked the life out of him, man of such culture doesn't know how to react to a bitchy wife when such expressions are frowned upon and never discussed in private let alone public. I love how Gordon doesn't just help a business, he helps the people. This one was especially heartbreaking because it was a family. You can tell that Akira was once a very empathetic man but he buried himself in his own failures so far that who he used to be was lost. It's quite possible that Lisa doesn't love him anymore, or at least not how she used to, but I don't believe she's anymore to blame for the state of things than he is. These children though. Really different from all the other families featured in this show. Other kids hold a grudge when their parents ask for too much. But their children are really genuine with the help they give. The son even said that if his parents asked for help, he'd give it immediately. They were raised in a good household.

Kudos to the kids to support their parents' business. Even the older son had a part time job to save his family's economy and he needed to use his bank account to the restaurant's saving. Meanwhile, the wife didn't do anything to save the business or even support her husband but drag him down. Instead of telling him to come back to cook, she was just torturing him by bullying him and harrasing him. What exactly is her role at that restaurant again?

Its cause hes asian not being racist i am asian and i can sympathize with akira since asian households have a kinda toxic environment where you just nod and listen when someone older than you presumably your parents are lecturing you, expressing your opinion is considered disrespectful which is also why we like american dramas since we get to see someone speak up sometimes scream at their parents since its something we can only dream of

@@tendax8912 *The main toxic part is the "supress your own opinion part"* Because even though you're being scolded for doing something wrong: One have to remember that people usually *do* things wrong _because_ of another person ( _instructions unclear, misunderstandings, frustrations, feelings that they couldn't speak about until they inevitably broke out into a fit of rage, etc._ ) If you are not allowed to speak your mind about the situation, then there will never be a mutual understanding of what went wrong and one party always gets to feel worse than the other. Especially for children who barely even understands their feelings to begin with. Having to supress your feelings, because "it's wrong/disrespectful to speak your mind about something", is not a good thing for a child to be enforced to learn. And imagine going around feeling like your feelings are wrong, evne though you feel those feelings for a reason. Some can handle that, but others can not and they'll end up really hurt, _not to mention really confrontation scared._ I mean no offense to you, _but that kind of dicipline is indeed a bit toxic in nature._

@@banyakakal4299 its toxic because it doesnt matter who is right or wrong, your parents are always right while all you can do is sit there and do nothing cause speaking up and trying to say how your right can be considered disrespectful. My uncle literally could not wait to get his own place so he could get away from his parents because of how bad his mental health was getting did i ever say its respectful and proud? Their huge mistake was they were trying to go big to move to Thousand Oaks from Bel-Air. They should've just stayed in Bel-Air forever. The restaurant in Thousand Oaks is killing them not only financially but also their marriage and their family relationship. Akira must be felt guilty to move to another place but he didn't want his family know how he felt. He felt he dishonored himself for being the patriach of the family and even worse, he might want to commit suicide at some point because suicide rate is so high in Japan. I'm glad Chef Ramsay noticed that after he realized Akira has no response of his criticism and he decided to help his family to encourage him to be better.
