Yafya is the Riz of the Melon arc. Riz the Bear was a three-arc antagonist. Yafya is the three-arc antagonist we have currently. Melon is basically the first part of Yafya's triple arc. I fully expect Legosi and Yafya to go at it, and for Louis to rise above Yafya and Legosi to rise above Gosha. Part of how I expect Louis to rise above Yafya is by embracing Juno, and embracing Legosi's relationship with Haru. In fact I fully expect Louis to get involved with the fight with Yafya due to how Yafya will inevitably target the Shishigumi, perhaps taking the last few out, how cool (and tragic as hell) would that be?

My theory is that Yafya might be repressing some deeper feelings for Gosha that stem from more than just a soured friendship. His prejudices and stated social ideals just sound too much like those of a man hurt by and unable to face much less defeat his "shadow". In his bid to escape the pain it brought and never have to confront it ever again--Yafya openly presents, projects, and orients himself as being against everything his shadow (the parts of himself he dislikes and wants to deny) represents.

The story of Legoshi's mother made me cry when she slept with him one last time before she killed herself. It got me even more when Legoshi admitted he knew she was there and acted like he was sleeping so she could enjoy the moment. I'm not going to be ready to re-read that part when it comes out on a physical copy in English. The good thing is that it'll be a while till that arc gets here.

Legosi’s heritage has been hinted several times he’s really an outlier of his species, Gray Wolf. He’s much larger than the average gray wolf, extremely strong, and his personality is rather...weird 😂 I noticed nearly every time someone meets Legosi they’re shocked by how fucking huge he is. He also once got onto a Reptile train to avoid getting tracked by smell and the passengers questioned how did a mammal know about the train? Once it was revealed Gosha was his grandfather, everything made sense! Legosi got those traits from his Komodo Dragon side: his abnormal height, incredible strength, facial structure, eye shape, and his deadpan, quiet personality traits. His mother had a similar personality as well, her reptile side had given her a more quiet personality and she struggled fitting in. She had to fake a happy personality and act like every other happy canine. I know Legosi was named after an actor, but I like that to me “Legosi” almost sounds like “Legacy”. He is the legacy of Gosha (a future Beastar) and strives to make the world better. Not to mention he has the potential to be a Beastar.

Not necessarily. The point of being a scaly and furry is being a fan of anthropomorphic animals and, usually, have persona/avatar that is one. That's the basic requirements. Whatever is erm... not safe for work... is just as extra as any R34 art for any other fandom, even if there may be some rather "exotic" kinks involved. But again, a SFW side of the community exists.

His pacifism and choice of family over society are very noble, but I wish his arc closes with him realizing abandoning Yafia was a mistake because being a Beastar would allow him to help hybrids, his family included, and other poisonous species, giving society a chance to see such animals with better eyes.

Gosha is one of the best characters in the manga. And yet we still know so little about him and his past (it's been stated several times he used to be a mercenary). He basically shows us what Legoshi is becoming in his development. Legoshi ended up being a vigilante acting in the shadows, essentially doing (unbeknownst to him) what his grandfather used to do at his age. Oh, and don't forget how the manga underlined several times the similarities between Legoshi and Gosha. Both in behaviour and in physical features. Remember when Gouhin noted Legoshi fighting style was odd for a wolf? From the scenes we saw in the manga, he basically fights with his fists the same way Gosha does. Moreover, no surprise there, the fandom basically is almost certain Legoshi will be developing some reptilian features later on, as there are way too many hints and foreshadowing going out there: his increased stamina and resistance, his increased healing capabilities (especially when Legoshi recovered after being shot, from a near-dead state to casually-walking on the street), the fact his age is basically very close to the age Leano had when she started mutating, etc.

It also makes sense to include that aspect as a chance for a further growth of Legosi's character. He arrived at a point where he is coming in terms with his nature as a wolf. Making some scales appear out of nowhere would make him think again on who he is and what he wants to be.

Like when he has finally accepted his position as a grey wolf, his increasing reptile traits will make him learn how to adapt into it and accept a part of his heritage. Can relate it to how change is a constant thing in a person's life and whatnot.

I think with Legosi’s mental battle with his wolf nature making him change to a Komodo Dragon would be counterproductive to character development. I suspect the allusions between Gosha and Legosi point to Legosi and Louis becoming the first Beastar duo just like Yafya and Gosha planned to. It’s even in the name, Beastars plural.

As a person of color I think Goesha’s character actually hits a nerve learning about him. I have gotten comments from other people of my own race saying you can’t wear this because you’ll look stereotypical or you can’t do this because we’re not suppose to say or do that. And I think a lot of people think like that because they don’t want to cause trouble from being different. Edit: Thanks for the likes, another thing I noticed rewatching this coming but another real world thing that’s struck here is hiding one’s biracial heritage. I can attest from my own family hertiage, seeing others, and history in general there are many people who do this because they fear discrimination, or want the benefits of the majority, or because people tell them due to their appearance that they’re not really biracial since they don’t look like it.

I think the fact is the author wants every character to grow instead of fall. Beastars has a dark setting but I feel the author is not intended to make the characters going through a dark path, instead they help each other. I am so happy when I found Juno went to find Legosi when she has feelings on rouis, because if the author intended to make them fall, these subtle story details would not even exist. This manga represents a world of animals who somehow all evolved sapience simultaneously, while ALL still must battle with their instincts and INTERNAL beasts. That's where "Zootopia" failed. The flaws of the characters were all EXTERNAL and imposed UPON them, not from character and personality issues natural to themselves. They usually felt far too 'generically human' for this world of animals, despite the tacked on 'animal' traits. And the world itself was an artificial reality existing to preach a tailored message to its audience. The only impacts were there to drive the central plot and all other tangential parts didn't even appear to matter. For instance, Judy knows of the Big Boss... a mobster who's murdered animals. Yet she, as a POLICE OFFICER who should be more than a little concerned about a massive criminal syndicate... makes nice with them all and even goes to the mob daughter's wedding as a guest. You see? NO CONSEQUENCES for anything that isn't CHOSEN as the 'villain' by the WRITERS. It's all EXTERNAL, not intrinsic to the world's natural connections and causality. Consider the two lion mayors: Mayor Lionheart was a rather decent fellow who had no idea why predators were going feral and was trying to protect himself from the EXTERNAL attacks. When it's revealed he's hiding the 'feral' animals, it's not shocking at all. It's actually a reasonable response to what, as far as he knew, could have been some horrific brain disease. You could argue that he should have let everyone else know about it, but quarantine for the victims was the correct course of action. He could have been replaced by many examples of human beings and nothing about his character would have changed. The Mayor in "Beastars" KNOWS about the Shishibumi, and covers it up. He understands very well the savage nature lurking just behind the veneer of civility their tenuous society clings to by fraying threads. He has gone so far as to surgically alter himself to look less threatening due to this, and he appeared a very calm, kind, and collected individual. Thus the reveal of his facilitation of a cover-up where citizens are abducted, murdered, and eaten by his own species comes across and shocking and horrifying, and the Mayor immediately comes across as entirely selfish and somewhat sociopathic. He truly feels like a bloodthirsty predator hiding what he is and what his kind are doing on a regular basis simply to stay on top. Only a small fraction of people throughout history could be exchanged for his role, usually those at the top of wicked regimes who, at first, presented themselves as magnanimous to the world while their henchmen went about committing mounting atrocities in the shadows. One mayor lion is merely a bit character in a kids movie. The other is a scheming, conniving hypocritical PERSON whose motivations and drives are natural to both his species and his social position. Thus, he is a complete character and has far more dramatic and meaningful impact on the story.

Honestly, the part of Legosi fighting Ritz instead of turning him into the law is because he knew the nature of carnivores, with their uncontrollable feral instincts and nature, as well as his love for herbivores. He did not think that it was right to turn Ritz to the law because he is not sure what is the right way to do things (his morals vs Ritz's). So to decide that or discover his own stand in the matter, he wants to confront Ritz upfront and alone.

I remember when I first read the manga there was an offhand comment regarding parentage and hybrids and someone said, in a joking manner, that Legoshi's grandfather is a komodo dragon. Everyone laughed about it, then when that chapter came out everyone said 'I thought [that earlier commentor] was joking, so I went back and checked and everyone who made that comment was someone who had replied to the original joke. It's one of the most touching moments of reading manga online I've had.

I find the discrimination in this world more a natural cause-effect connection and it makes a great deal of sense. Consider the poison aspect: other creatures could literally die from contact with it. Imagine if YOU dripped venom everywhere you went. It wouldn't even matter if you looked like everyone else, you'd be shunned because you're literally lethal to the touch! Even those who were fascinated by you wouldn't be able to risk close contact. It'd be akin to us and fire. Yeah, we like to watch it, but trying to hug it is a BAD IDEA. And the same goes with the predators and prey. The preds often look down on the prey species, they're nothing but meat as far as many of them are concerned. And the prey look at the predators as fearsome monsters... because they frequently ARE!! Add into that the omni-present instincts each side is constantly dealing with... yeah, their world is a mess, but it's a mess that has arisen entirely from the internal aspects of its structure and population. So it feels natural. It's a metaphor of our society, and yet is also disconnected from the causes of prejudice in our world. They are different species entirely and some are a great danger to others. Let us not forget that, at some point in their world's history, they were all eating each other. Something caused them to try and live together rather than make war until only a few survived. Those two aspects are the biggest mystery to me of all. How did they all become intelligent at once, and why did they try to live together in the first place? For the world to finally become the first perfect mainstream animal world fantasy, those final questions need an answer.

Definitely agree! I think you were able to put into words on why people can enjoy this anime/manga without feeling like it'd be too preachy or condescending since the predjudices that the characters must face aren't going to be one-to-one with our own world. What's amazing is that people can draw their own interpretations/perspectives onto the story and its characters (as a lot of great art is all about leaving room for people to draw their own opinions from it)!

Gosha is the best -kimono- -kramoda- lizard monster grandpa that you could wish for. I didn't even think ONCE about the possibility that he could have lost the fight against the bats. Now I'm scared for his safety. I noticed the similarities between Legosi and Yafya, but I didn't think about how much Gosha did to teach his grandson pacifism to keep him away from Yafya's way of life. I hope we get to see more of him. Together with Jack he is my favourite secondary character. And I can't wait for him to make a return. I was confused to see your notification. I really slept on Gosha for the longest time but didn't really appreciate him a ton til recently. He gave up everything, his future, his status, just for the one he loved. He was willing to be shunned and socially removed from his daughters life just to make her happy. He never was offended by her and even the doctor referring to him or his half of his daughter as undesirable. Even after she died and Smolgosi blamed him for her death, instead of walking away (cuz Gosha quite literally could. He legally could not even be recognised by the state as Leano's father or Legosi's grandfather because of the stigma of interspecies families and hybrid children so Legosi was not his responsibility) he tried his best to be there for him, payed for his school, and loved him even after multiple years of dead silence from Legosi. He also takes care of little hybrid children!!! (I personally think he does this out of guilt for how Leano's life went and he just wants to give them a better chance at life) Gosha is such a pure soul and major badass. How could anyone hate him?

This video was great! I learned a lot about Gosha that I didn't think about. Many people I know say Gosha is one of the best characters in the series. But I still feel like we're not done with his arc, and I still don't think he's "complete" enough. Still like him a lot though XD P.S : Joseph is my favorite JoJo too!! Though I do feel like the title is a bit of a clickbait~ I was expecting like half the video discussing about how these two characters were alike. Wow, SonicHaXD, it's an honor to have you comment. Your original video on Beastars is what got me into the series and I wanted to say thank you for that. Anyway yeah, I'm probably going to make some follow up video to this once his character arc is concluded. We still haven't sen him (and Yafya too for that matter) is a very long time and I really am wondering how they are going to be dragged into the climax of the arc. I agree with you in he's not complete yet because yeah, there are still many things we don't know about him. I'm really hoping that he shows up again soon so we can learn another answer to his past, like maybe how his girlfriend died or something.

Great analysis. Gosha is by far my favorite character (and Legosi... and Haru... and Bill...). There are aspects of his story that hit VERY close to home for me that definitely seem to give me a different perspective on how his life has played out. I’ve lost family to suicide, so I have very strong feelings towards Leano’s character (and Toki’s, I’ll leave who that is unspoiled for now). Suicide is absolutely devastating for the people left behind; losing anyone forever is difficult enough, but when someone kills themselves you’re left wondering for the rest of your life what could’ve been and why it had to happen, not to mention blaming yourself. Legosi, Gosha’s beloved grandson and the one person who never seemed to have any prejudice towards him, blaming Gosha for Leano’s death was beyond harsh, because Gosha was undoubtedly already blaming himself, undoubtedly thinking if not for his genes she would’ve lived a normal, healthy life, would have never suffered so much mentally, physically, or emotionally. However, there’s also no excuse for suicide. As someone who has also suffered serious suicidal thoughts, even I can’t find a way to justify how selfish an act it is. Gosha is the most loving, decent character in the story, he sacrifices EVERYTHING for his family, he sees the very fact a venomous animal could have a family at all as a dream come true. Contrary to popular belief, he didn’t marry Leano’s mother, because it was illegal for a venomous animal to do so (and interspecies marriages weren’t actually legalized that long ago either, iirc). He was more than happy just living with a beautiful animal and having a beautiful child, before that was all taken away from him in a moment of absolute selfishness. The fact he has remained such a good person despite losing the family he cherished and being blamed for their deaths (just look at how he was treated by those bird punks and tell me he wasn’t accused of murdering his partner when she died) basically makes him a saint. I will never be able to forgive Leano for what she did, and honestly I don’t understand why she was so determined to have a child when she started changing since that child would also be a hybrid and inevitably suffer in similar ways she did, even if to a lesser degree. That also seems selfish to me. Luckily we got Legosi and so far his differences have been relatively minor and he’s matured enough not to let the discrimination affect him. Needless to say, I have very little sympathy for Leano, and my feelings for Toki are even more sour. Anyway! I would love to see you do an updated video discussing what we know now about his family. He’s got the patience of Job and it’s truly amazing.
