It's odd for me to be saying this now, but the lower the stakes, the greater the emotional impact it seems to have. We don't know too many people who want to take over/destroy the world. But we know plenty of people who are so convinced that they're right that they'll gaslight, abuse, and hurt people to get their way. Especially people that they're supposed to be protecting. That's why I've toned down my own writing to have lower, more personal stakes. Once I started doing that, I was told that the quality of my writing improved dramatically. So props to The Owl House for keeping the focus on the characters instead of some big driving mystery or shock value; it's one of the better animated shows on TV right now.

Entirely. It isn't really possible to relate to the scale of "oh if the villain succeeds literally everyone dies or lives a slave". Something small is much more relatable, like losing or wanting to protect a loved one, feeling betrayed by society, or just wanting to have something. Saitama just wants a fight that actually challenges him. Captain America just wants to protect friends and such (also why the winter soldier works way better than the first movie as far as tension. Copy paste baddies [literally nazis here] but with futuristic weapons or saving your one true friend from "your time" from an injustice you know isn't his fault). There's two stories I'm currently working on. One doesn't really have huge stakes. The MC is an amnesiac that becomes a knockoff batman and ends up killing a drug kingpin in a small-ish city. A big part of the story focuses on how it affects that person's daughter (whom he used as bait without her knowledge to kill him) and how they both come to terms nearly a decade later. In the other, there is a bigger scope. In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, there is a surviving city, who don't really know their own history. It focuses on the MC who is betrayed by this society, only to find out that their whole pantheon (which led in large part to his personal betrayals and trauma that start his story) is an elaborate ruse from the powerful and a complete lie in itself. From there it goes on to recovering from the trauma, and leads him into an irreconcilable position with the person who helps him recover once they get the potential to fix things. In the background we've got guerrila warfare leading into a coup, but it serves more than anything as catalysts and displays of character. Especially if action rises as a focus, character writing may fall by the wayside. You don't get invested in a slap fight though, even if it looks insanely cool (especially with film vs writing, where action can be portrayed better in the former for the most part). You get interested in the character's stakes in the fight, if anything. Characters always come first in good writing, and are consistent (not to say they don't change, but that their changes and actions are sensible and believable given their situation). The biggest turn off from a story is getting pulled out to just ask "why the fuck did [character] do [thing]?!" If you want a character to do something unexpected, then use a third person storytelling point and thoroughly foreshadow it, just make the main character(s) oblivious to it. That serves to set up as dramatic irony, allowing us to still see characters caught off guard, but allows us to reasonably understand motives. Twists *can* work but they are far overused when this would work better in most cases, whereas the shock of a twist exists only for a first watching (where it may set up dramatic irony if it works well, but if it does not, it just becomes a pain). Idk why I wrote an essay in a YT comment to say that I agree with you, but there we go.

I am already planning a trilogy I might wish to write eventually. My current plan: The first book will be with the heroes trying to get rid of the tyrant who plagues the land. Why? Because he ruined their lives by his crappy rule and everything they have left now is to dedicate their lives to fighting him. The second one will focus on them rebuilding and the heroes, who trained many years to defeat the tyrant, have nothing to do anymore and struggle to fit back in, just to jump into the next adventure that opens up to them, because it is easier to do. It's never really about the greater good, it is always about the characters and their personal ties to the villain.

Totally agree. Like in my werewolf story, there are hunters capturing werewolves and some werewolves don’t want to get involved cuz they want to hide and protect their families. Like some werewolves families are humans who in the know and they don’t want to risk their lives. There no big bad cuz there no reason to have one. Really hate the whole world in danger plot instead of characters being in danger. I read/watch shows for characters and not for the world/backgrounds.

I haven't seen this show, not a single episode. I still teared up watching the snippets that Lily put in the video. Eda's caring smile while she neatly folds Luz's birthday present and Luz's pain when she comes back to an empty home, knowing she's the reason it's empty. Watching her eyes drift from the cake to the wrapped present and seeing her fall to her knees in pure dread is just a level of intensity that big mysteries and plot points could never get, ever.

Another good ending to that crush storyline would be for her to confess her feelings but get let down gently and them still being good friends anyway. There are other parts to the LGBT experience than just dating and relationships and I think it would be cool to see a bisexual just doing her own thing. Also there is nothing much more sapphic than having a crush on your straight friend then learning to get over it and move on.

Right? Lots of lgbt kids get rejected by their crush cuz they’re either straight or not their type. I had a crush on a girl in middle school and I got rejected by her even tho she was also gay and that’s just part of the experience just because two characters are LGBT doesnt mean they have to end up together so I think if Luz does reject Amity it would make for a good lesson. But it seems like Dana wants to make them to be end game.

Jasper Hardin Agreed, really didn’t like the instant redemption and I can’t buy at all that she wouldn’t have come to talk to Eda about it in the (presumably many) intervening years between cursing her and Agony of a Witch if she ACTUALLY cared about her sister. What’s more, the best parts of the final episode were Luz showing off what she’s learned in her attempt to free Eda, their following conversation, and all the people Luz and Eda have helped rallying to try and free her. Everything with Lilith felt forced and anticlimactic. I’m also kind of worried for Eda in season 2, because they’ve basically taken away a major part of her character - being the most powerful magic user on the Isles - and while I hope that goes somewhere positive, I’m worried that it just... won’t.

@hawklegs6940

@@jamestrevelyan1268 I dunno, I think I get where Lilith is coming from. When you don't tell someone something, all it does is get harder and harder to tell it the more time that goes on. I think she felt that if she could just fix it, then it would make things right. Before the season finale, Lilith was sure the emperor was going to cure Eda's curse and let her join the emperor's coven. I know she probably shouldn't have believed him, but Bellos seems like the type to say whatever he needs to in order to get people to do what he wants (he might've also been lying when he reassured Luz he wasn't planning on invading the human world, just sayin). I think Lilith was stuck in the mindset of restoring the past, putting things back the way they were before, like with her line about how they'll join the emperor's coven just like we wanted to when we were kids, etc. It can be a very damaging mindset to hang on to the past, and it was because of this that she went so far. In her mind, if she could accomplish this ONE thing, she could fix everything with her sister. And like with joining the emperor's coven, she was willing to do anything to accomplish this goal, even threatening "Edalin's human pet". When the emperor went back on his word, it was almost like a slap in the face for Lilith, and it opened her eyes to how corrupt and tyrannical the emperor really is. She still has a long way to go in making amends, but I feel that she's taken a good first step. I just think it's interesting how everyone can fall victim to a sort of mental tunnel vision when they think their goals are simpler than they are, even if it isn't the right way to fix things, they almost trick themselves into believing it. I think now Lilith needs to learn to move forward in repairing her relationship with Eda in light of what she's done instead of what she was trying to do before in covering up her mistakes and trying to restore a past long gone. I also hope they address Lilith seeing Luz as lesser due to being a human, and it might create an interesting dynamic between Luz, Lilith, and Amity with Lilith being Amity's mentor. I also expect Lilith won't be taking learning paper magic from Luz well, but this is just my prediction.

I actually don't find Amity boring at all. I like how grounded and reserved she usually is in a show where most main characters are over the top (which I don't mind but Gus and Luz can be tiring in some episodes) without that feeling like she doesn't fit. She has things that she likes to do outside of being with Luz, she has big insecurities that she keeps secret, and her story shows the effects of toxic high standards from the family family and that you have to be brave to stand up against them to stop yourself from becoming someone that you don't want to be. She feels like a real person that I'd like to befriend. I'm not saying the handling of her character is perfect though. It feels like she had a bit too much screen time when Willow and (especially) Gus are in much more need of some character exploration and maybe development too. I also think that they have a long way to go if they want Luz to get together with Amity because of how uninterested in anything else than friendship Luz seems to be and I don't want that to get dragged on. I actually think it would work better if she got rejected and Amity moved on to someone else while remaining friends with Luz for better pacing, but either way I'll be happy with the results as long as it's well executed. They do have very cute moments sometimes so I understand the where the Lumity fans come from.

Catra almost destroyed the world just so Adora would lose, abused both Scorpia and Adora, sent Entrapta to Beast Island to die. Essentially ran the genocidal Horde running as per usual.. nothing about that is healthy!

I really enjoyed this video, more so than I was expecting because I come here for you and your opinions, rather than the material you're covering. But the chilled tone, the open-ended nature of the discussion was something I really, really enjoyed. Your Glass of Water videos have so much finality and evidence that even beyond you respecting your own opinions and standing up for them, it often feels like there's nowhere in that discussion to go. This isn't a bad thing, mind you, Glass of Water is _easily_ my favourite of your series, but the presentation of this video was refreshing and maybe more enjoyable since there's been so much anger in the last few months? I'm excited to see where you'll take your content now that the Disney project is finished, but if this video format became more frequent, I certainly wouldn't be complaining. Thank you for the content you make regardless and I hope your vacation was great!

Hmmm now that the last episode of the season is out, I’m curious to hear your opinions on it. Lilith isn’t really redeemed, she’s just kinda let off the hook for now. Luz doesn’t trust her, she just wanted her help. Even after she split the curse, there are no “I forgive you,”s from Eda. She just turns her attention to Luz. And there is an allusion to what the emperor is planning, but tbh, I was way more focused on Luz’s recoding that she’s saving for her mom and she and Eda promising to learn more glyphs together.

So, the bit about the themes being made apparent by who is saying what is the point that resonated the most with me in this video. A lot of people that are new to critique (or just plain bad at it) will just take something a character says and think that's the theme without thinking of the context. The biggest example I can think of is the "you'll have your looks" line The Little Mermaid. So many people say this as a regressive statement then they take that wagon and ride it til the wheels fall off, but they miss so many crucial points about the context of the scene. 1. This line is Uttered by Ursula. Yknow... the villain? 2. In the scene, Ursula is trying to convince Ariel to sign her voice away, and she's responding to the question of "how can i attract him without my voice." Obviously she's gonna give a response that pushes Ariel towards signing the deal, and she's betting on the fact that a sixteen-year-old wouldn't be able to see through the bullshit. Hell, she even stops to say to Flotsam and Jetsam "Now I've got her boys." It couldn't be any more clear that she's trying to dupe Ariel, and if that doesn't make it clear, then the following point does. 3.Ursula uses Ariel's voice to seduce Eric, so *clearly* she doesn't think looks are all that matter if she valued Ariel's voice that much. Sorry for the essay XD. This video really got the gears turning.

You kinda get where stakes don't matter with a lot of different stories. Halo (even though a bit of a mess) is a good example. By the end halo 2 your AI companion is stuck with the flood, a parasite race that destroys worlds. I don't really care that much about the parasite, i just care about what's gonna happen to Cortana. Not to undermine the flood though, that shit's creppy.

I don't know anyone who gives that much of a shit about the potential distruction of Middle Earth. Everyone just wants Sam to be okay. ''the world'' is way too broad for anyone to give a shit about.

I really hope Lillith doesn't get redeemed. Also how do you think the show is going to go with Luz's mom? Some fans are saying she's abusive, but theres no proof of that. She tries to send Luz to a summer camp that she really doesn't want to go to. Fans are going off that and claiming the family is dysfunctional, and that's one of the reasons why Luz chose to stay on the Isles so fast.

1:26 YES! Can you please do something about how fiercely the fandom was defending Cozy Glow's punishments? Maybe I can see it when she was turned to stone with the other two, but the initial time when she was sent to Tartarus was ridiculous to me! It was like they put in no effort to redeem her despite that being a theme up until that point, even though what she did wasn't any worse than what villains that WERE redeemed (and probably shouldn't have been) did.

To me the purpose of stakes in writing has always been to exist as a driving force in adventure or conflict driven stories. What I mean by that is if your story is a large sprawling epic, or even just a down to earth good vs. evil story, the stakes only exist to further the characters. The stakes and the overarching effects should never be the focus of the story, and if you have world ending stakes they should only exist because it pushes the characters forward. It's always an interesting thing to think about, and I do agree that one of the most common mistakes in storytelling is overdoing the stakes of a story. There often needs to be stakes in a story, but those stakes could be as simple as damaging interpersonal relationships, they don't always need to be "The world will end if we fail." On top of that, the stakes should never be the focus of the story, because as you said, once those stakes are gone any interest in the story and world fades. Utilizing stakes as a character building tool means that people get attached to the characters and are able to have that thrill not just because of the stakes, but because of how the characters they love will deal with them.

Petty much my only complaint with She-Ra was that they waited till the ending to allow the main characters to get together so i am right there with the people who are desperate for more series to actually just let romantic lead characters be in active relationships for longer than one episode. Honestly not even just LGBT characters have this problem in the world of animation, pretty much all i watch most of the time is romance anime in all it's various forms and i can count the number of times we got proper relationship development beyond the lead up to the big kiss scene as the overwhelming minority in terms of shows that were not just straight up fan service fuel, and even in those it doesn't happen all that often.

Honestly I'm so scared they'll try to redeem Lilith, I hope they don't but I am curious to learn /why/ she did what she did. I just hope when we learn it still has the message that despite any good/valid reasons, the act itself is not excusable. Based on reactions, I def don't think Eda would be wanting to forgive her and that gives me peace. This coming from someone who was super into Lilith when the show started, I loved her character design, still do! But sometimes you just want a well designed irredeemable vilian with a good backstory that shows they made all the wrong choices.

ugh thank you for feeding us lily. and idk if I’m alone on this but I lowkey thought She-ra would put glimmer and catra together because of the framing of certain scenes and I was praying to go the didn’t because the only character who Catra has not traumatized in that entire friend group was Bow and I know they weren’t gonna end up together so I was kind of like “yikes noelle please don’t do it” but then she just ended up doing it with catra and adora. I will say however that the episodes with catra redeemed afterwards are pretty entertaining, especially the one where she gets a pet.

I would love to see/hear your opinions on Catra as a character. I hated Catra after like season 2. She wasn't just a bad friend she was abusive to Adora and Scorpia. To find out so many people loved Catra and related to her scared me. " I love her, she speaks to me" If you're a Catra... Big yikes!
@eleenadume5712
@eleenadume5712 4 жыл бұрын
Krystal King Disclaimer: You can still hate Catra all you want, I just wanted to give you at least a little bit of an explanation why people latch onto her as a character (and why that isn’t as bad as it might sound) Catra’s whole story is about breaking the circle of abuse. The show focuses a lot on her being abused by Shadow Weaver, and we know that at least some of her actions are caused by that abuse (although that doesn’t excuse them). This lead to abuse victims latching onto her character - that abuse victims are in danger of becoming abusers themselves because they were raised with this behavior is why it’s called a circle. This is why said abuse victims hoped that she could break the circle and learn to be better, like they had done in the past or were hoping to do in the future. Obviously none of them have actively tried to destroy the world... but growing up in a toxic environment can and will turn you toxic, and learning to overcome that kind of behavior can be hard. She speaks to people because of her struggle to accept help. Because she doesn’t know how to deal with how badly she’s been hurt and ends up hurting her friends and pushing them away from her with her toxic behavior. Because she constantly feels like she has to prove to everyone around her that she’s better than them, hoping they won’t see how weak and afraid she really is. Catra was always written to be an at least somewhat likable character (although obviously her actions were still framed as wrong and horrible and need to be acknowledged as such), and most people that do love her love her because they relate to what she’s been through (and is still going through) and therefore see her potential to be better, and not for the harm she caused others. (I really don’t want to start a fight, like I said, feel free to hate the character all you want, she’s done terrible things and hurt a lot of people and not liking her is 100% understandable and valid. I just wanted to voice why people that love her and relate to her scare me way less than people who somehow relate to characters like Kylo Ren, who were never depicted as even slightly sympathetic to begin with.)

@@eleenadume5712 .... Okay... I kinda knew all of this. I'm not talking about victims of abuse or people who suffer with any mental illness. I know people personally who relate to Catra ( friends) and there's no power dynamic since we are both in control of our emotions and can leave the friendship whenever we want. I'm taking about people who are their own problems. They blame the world and their abuse on their despicable behavior when it may have nothing to do with the situation. Which I guess in some ways fits into what you're saying. If you're reading this and feel like it fits in with why someone would relate to Catra then idk what to tell you. I still think ppl who like Catra are weird bc they don't end up breaking the cycle of abuse and if they do it's with new friends, after they already scared old ones. I can see for myself why people would love Catra and that was understandble the first season. That was the first season, then Scropia came in and she became verbally abusive and physically abusive to Adora and even in the end she's forgiven and gets redemption. She's her own problem and after about the 4th season her nonsense just becomes irredeemable. Like I said b4 I know exactly why someone would attach themselves to Catra but to me it's unrealistic bc it's teaching abusive ppl that they will be forgiven if they prove themselves. Catra doesn't get to " Do the right thing" Last minute because there's someone she can't beat. Like I said before if someone thinks of themselves as a Catra that's a big red flag to me.
@eleenadume5712
@eleenadume5712 4 жыл бұрын
Krystal King Okay, I didn’t know how involved you are in the show/fandom so I just thought I’d bring that up. I’ll admit I’m... a bit confused about what you were trying to say with your friends that like Catra, but that might just be me being too dumb to read xD And I personally don’t think Catra did the right thing last minute because she couldn’t beat Prime, she did it because she finally genuinely realized she fucked up and wanted to be better. But I will stand by the belief that she’s just started to be better by the end of the last season and isn’t completely forgiven by everyone because some of the things she did were just too severe and shouldn’t be forgiven at all - what she did was a taking a first step, not the entire journey. I especially wish Scorpia hadn’t forgiven her, because while Adora at least has some sincerely good memories with Catra, there’s absolutely nothing about Scorpia’s and Catra’s relationship that was desirable in a friendship at any given point - their relationship has never been anything but one-sided and toxic, and Scorpia allowing Catra back into her life sent shivers down my spine. People that relate to Catra because they also believe everything else is to blame for their problems but themselves are a whole different story, but I didn’t mean that in any sense of these people actually being right, I just meant that some people who have been in that place mentally and have then actually learned to be better and take responsibility for their actions might remember what it’s like to be in that position and relate to Catra because of that. And yeah, I absolutely agree about the expectation to be forgiven by everyone you hurt is extremely unrealistic, even if you do learn to be better, and I wish that had been handled differently. We need more “Hey, you messed up and not everyone will forgive you, but that’s okay”-stories and less “you are a better person now and therefore all the bad things you did in the past will be forgiven by everyone you hurt”-stories in general.
