Calli almost did not release this song. She thought it would be too personal and people wouldn't like it. It's basically her reflecting on her life decision to go into Hololive versus staying where she was in the underground rap scene in Japan. She was very anti idol culture early on and was vocal about it in her music and with her friends. She grew up though and knew this was a big opportunity for her. Her scene was dying (covid hit hard for live music) and many of her friends doing music either could not make it or weren't willing to give up everything to pursue it. When she joined Hololive she lost some friends who thought she sold out and went against what she was representing. She found herself becoming more successful than her heroes who inspired her to make it this far and some of them hated her for making the decision to go corporate. This is her song to them and to herself dealing with who she was and giving up on the fantasy of being that person who never made it. She misses those friends but at the same time she got everything she wanted. It's a complicated feeling. I really like this song. Many of her songs are stories like this.

This one was a really personal song for Calli and she talked about it a lot in the post-release stream she did. Before joining Hololive, she was mostly an underground indie rapper in the Japanese rap scene in Japan (she's a US citizen living in Japan, hence the passport) and had made quite a few friends in that scene. When she landed a role of a lifetime with Hololive, she was skyrocketed into the spotlight and saw immediate success as a result. Unfortunately, some of her friends from the Jrap scene saw this as selling out rather than being happy for her, and basically refused to talk to her again as they saw that as "cheating" to become famous, despite just how hard Calli works at her song writing and pouring every ounce of her being into every song she writes. So, this song was basically her look back at the "good old days" from before Hololive and maybe wondering a bit about what things might have been like had she not joined Hololive. Edit: As others in the comments have pointed out, I had forgotten about a key point of the story which was that many of her friends had been forced out of music during the pandemic when music venues had pretty much closed down for a while. Calli had found a way around this in such a way that they were unable to easily follow, which made some of them upset.
@CyrusMajin
@CyrusMajin 2 жыл бұрын
She has also stated that she once had the same view as those who criticized her for "selling out" when she found an opportunity that could springboard her music career. Having had that view and knowing how her past self would react to where she is now has, by her own admission, fed into her imposter syndrome (though maybe not in those exact words). The difference in her current attitude is that she can recognize that not taking such an opportunity when presented is foolish. Every independent artist, underground or otherwise, wants to hit it big and become successful. However, many are to prideful to take the shots that are offered because of either some nebulous sense of not compromising their "artistic integrity" or a belief that they can only claim to have made it because they did so on their own.
@effortlessfury
@effortlessfury 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't so much selling out as it was that she was able to grab an opportunity for success as all of the opportunities, not just for greater success but to keep doing what they were already doing (live performances in their local scene), died with the pandemic. Though still petty, the bitterness is a little more understandable when you consider that her rise came with a great many of her peers falling from where they already were.

@@CyrusMajin its especially more difficult for gaijin or non-japanese/asian people in JP to even reach success or go up the ladder.... The proper 'asian' way is to reach out to every opportunity you can by making over 100 job applications or college applications, and grabbing whatever gives you a 'yes'. Never be an option to a school/job. THEY need to be your options. Being able to do that can be difficult but that's how people can stay successful, imo.

Hololive saved her life. When she was on her last legs, stuck in Japan with no family and a tiny apartment. Because of COVID-19, she couldn't make money through the means that she was before, stages and bars closed. Calli and Kiara are 2 people who were basically saved by Hololive.

After such a long time we finally get a Calli song and it is "End of a Life"!!! Such a long awaited song. Probably my most favorite song of hers. It reminds you that even the grim reaper has feelings. I will update my comment at the end. Edit: This song is basically Mori speaking about her past and her struggles through her success. She speaks of how she moved to Japan, being in a city she doesn't recognize and being alone. How surpassed everyone she once looked up to hence why she said, "You watched your heroes fade into the rear view mirror of the villian you portrayed." Losing friends and other hardships. She even speaks of how she feels bad, but knows she shouldn't because she has worked for it. This song is extremely personal to her, she is an amazing grim reaper. If you want another great song, I would recommend either her first song "Excuse My Rudeness But Could You Please RIP?" Or "Cursed Night." Thank you for your time

Cali became so much fan of the Japanese underground rap scene that she moved to Japan. There she became big part of the community. She took the advice to audition to Hololive and got really successful there. At the same time the Pandemic happen and a lot of bard had to close. So friends had to give up music for paid jobs and felt like Cali betrayed them by selling out to a company. Instead of getting congratulations she didn’t even get replies. The song was really emotional that she didn’t want to release it first - She did a lyric break down stream to the song where she got into tears explaining the second verse

She works hard af, streams a lot (slowing down gladly) makes a lot of music and the corp work (If you know her... Other side... "Concrete jungle" and "labyrinth of lights" are metaphors for Tokyo. She also uses "outerspace" for being a foreigner (an alien). Calli went to Japan after being inspired by musicians she found from there. When the pandemic hit, many of the small music venues had to close ("ladder fell and shattered all the bars that we had played" (also double-meaning for how the pandemic impacted the underground rap scene specifically)). At the same time, she managed to find success doing this vtubing thing. She ended up passing, in terms of popularity, those very same people that inspired her in the first place ("the rear view mirror of the villian you portrayed"). Some of those people decided that it was time to retire ("your friends grew tired of fantasy, you with that they had stayed"). The song is very deep and personal for Calli. A melancholy look back at those times where she and some others in the space would be struggling to get by, just to get to the next live show. And even though she has reached some of those dreams that they all used to joke about, there is some aspects of that life that she still misses. Then there was a whole verse of her berating herself, asking herself "how can you feel sad, isn't this what you wanted?"

While many comments have talked about the main thrust of this song, they seem to be missing some other important pieces. Part of what this song talks about is how COVID absolutely decimated the live music scene in Japan. Bars and clubs they used to play at suddenly closed, and many people gave up on their dreams of music to pursue a career elsewhere. While so many people she knew and looked up to left (or were forced to leave) the scene, she was absolutely exploding in popularity due to her newfound success as a vtuber in the largest vtuber company. She went from a relatively small independent creator to an overnight success way beyond what anyone could have expected, and some of her friends felt betrayed, or that she "sold out" as a result. So in a sense, she's morning for everything that was lost, the clubs that went out of business, and fellow artists who have up on their dreams. One piece of speculation on my part: prior to this song releasing, her prior persona, Demondice, had been dormant since she started her career as a vtuber. I get the feeling she might have been struggling with whether to abandon Demondice altogether while writing this. Soon after this song dropped, she began releasing new music as Demondice alongside her stuff as Calli.

I second giving the lyric dive a watch; Calli is a once in a lifetime genius lyricist. Every line is meticulously crafted, and once you know the feelings behind the words, you'll definitely have a harder time holding back tears listening to the song. One thing that some people forget about Hololive is that it is a talent agency. The talents have to go through auditions and interviews to join. People seem to forget that and just think that their success comes from the brand name and not from the work and skills that got them hired in the first place. Cali's old stuff is a testament to how hard she worked before Hololive, and the success it has given her has allowed her to chase her dreams even more than before. When she says she's "a workaholic business lady, getting shit done." she isn't joking. She's a crazy workaholic.

The build in this song to the second verse is just amazing. It draws you in and then hits you in the gut with this deep guilt over succeeding and how others see it, and that moment manages to be so damn powerful despite Calli being relatively subtle with it.

This song is about a lot of things and, as you said, its very emotionaly heavy. Calli has talked about how she wasnt sure if she even should release this song at first, because its very, very personal. Its about moving to Japan, about her being lost in this strange new world and finding friends in Japans underground rap scene and then loosing those friends after joining hololive, because they saw that as Calli abbadoning them. Espewcially because the Japanese Underground Rap Scene was hit VERY hard by Covid, while Vtubing on the other hand drived and was a massive reason for their current success. All Calli wanted was for her friends to be proud of her and instead they saw her as a traitor. Thats the kinda feelings she worked through here. In a way, I would say one of Callis more recent songs, This Scuffed Up Age, is kinda the counter part of this song, where she is clearly at a much better place emotionally than when she wrote End of a Life.

Glad you reacted to this one. Was hoping you would after you did your first Mori reaction. I am very biased because I do love very melodic music but this has to be my favorite song of hers. Mori's singing voice is as you said so damn good and goes so well with her rap sections. Plus the emotions conveyed through her vocals, the whole production and the lyrics are just so damn on point. Edit: I forgot to mention. You've quickly become one of my favorite reactors on youtube. I randomly clicked on one of your videos on my recommended list and don't regret it at all. I do love the honest way you talk to your audience and the way you go in blindly into things. I'd say "End of a Life" is not my favorite song from Calli, but it is incredibly special and a big milestone for her music and streaming career as this song was a way for her to express herself very beautifully. It is one of those songs where you can derive so much meaning not only from what experiences Calli is telling us about in the lyrics but also "vague" in the sense that I feel a lot of people, including myself, can relate to this song quite a lot. So the song does have to do with her moving to Japan but it's more than that. So Calli originally moved to Japan to join the underground rap scene where she made a friends and she had some success. Then the pandemic hit and all the bars and places where they would perform were had to close down and basically destroyed the entire scene. This forced a lotta people to go back to their day jobs to support themselves. It was during this Hololive EN was being formed so Calli decided to take a massive risk and applied and got accepted. As is pretty easy to see she got massive success but a lotta the people turned their back on her because of said success. That's what the song is about. During the afterparty when talking about it and she got super emotional cause she just wanted the people she looked up to to be proud of her.

Glad you loved the song so much! That leaves one must-hear song left: Alice & U by Ayunda Risu (KZbin Music Weekend Ver). I recommend that version specifically as people seem to agree that it's her more passionate rendition, despite it being a more off the cuff recording. About this song specifically, most everyone in the comments has described the deeper meanings behind the song. One bit of trivia I'm not sure has come up is that she actually didn't think this song was worth releasing. I don't know why, whether it was because it was so personal or because she somehow thought it wouldn't become her #1 song for a toooon of her fans. The other bit of trivia is that the person responsible for the mix actually worked on a remix of her song RIP, which Calli had a contest for after her debut. She collaborated with a number of people from that contest, actually, including Boogie Voxx, The Herb Shop, Pretty Patterns (who I believe is who worked on End of a Life) and more I believe. If you want another deeper song from her, both Cursed Night and Red work. Cursed Night is more about struggling mentally when your life is going so crazy, and you don't really have an outlet. Red is more about success, especially that being online success or in entertainment or music being ephemeral, and both the struggle and acceptance of that. Red is by far the more popular of the two, given that Cursed Night is a little bit of a downer, being honest, though it's still good. I'll come up with another list after you listen to Risu if you're still interested going down the rabbit hole!

Considering Calli just celebrated her three-year anniversary of streaming with Hololive, it is pretty interesting to look back at the impact of this song. As she’s stated on her livestreams, she was so afraid of releasing this song because it’s so different from everything she’d done up to that point and the song was much more about her personally than her usual songs. However, I think that’s part of the reason why so many people LOVE the song and many consider it to be her best song (I’m one of them). The other thing that makes this song great though is just due to how relatable it is. Through life, we all make choices and sometimes those choices cause people to fall out of your life. I think in a sense, a lot of people cherish how Calli was able to share something so personal with her fans. I know the feeling all too well. I am one of the very few people in my family who decided to move far away to pursue a career and it caused a bit of a rift with some of my friends and family because they didn’t understand why I couldn’t find a career that’s closer to the family…but the fact is, I don’t regret the choice at all. The choice I made with my career has made me happy and I’ve experienced a lot of success with it. Has it damaged some of my relationships with friends and family? Yes. Do I have any regrets? No, because the people who truly care about you also care about your happiness and your successes. The people that fell out of my life ultimately go down as people that never truly cared.

I am starting to think that i've posted on every single react to this song, but that's because I love seeing people hear it for the first time. Mori, before she was mori, was an American girl living in japan working as a tutor/English teacher who spent her nights and weekends in a relatively microscopic indie rap scene where she was living her dream and making music. The music was why she came to japan in the first place, first to visit, then to live. She got to work with people who that were behind the songs that she heard that made her want to rap. She auditioned for hololive, on a whim. She, nor literally anyone else, had any idea what was coming. She charted with her first EP, she became one of the top ten en vtubers virtually overnight. She suddenly had more ears hearing her than she could have ever dreamed of. as a character. that she didn't own. It was a weird mix of success and existential crisis that was hard for all of the EN gen 1 girls, but we got to hear more about it from calli thanks to her songs. All of this happened, and at the same exact time, the pandemic hit. Hundreds of bars and venues closed virtually overnight. The scene she was a part of didn't suffer, it was killed. It will likely never really recover. A lot of the same people who a few months before were performing with her had to leave music entirely. Go get a job that could actually pay them--If they were LUCKY. Working dayjobs is hell, until you're laid off. Many of the people who GOT calli into music had to give it up, and she was having success none of them could have dreamed of. of course they were bitter, of course she was the bad guy, she would have seen herself as the bad guy if she was them. how can she be mad at them? but she was/is. I love this song, and all it's layers.

Glad you decided to check this one out. This track came out at a real rough time of my life and helped me to kind of carry through. It's absolutely beautiful but just as somber, and the other comments have gone into what it means to her. It just takes you in and tells a story, and that is the power of her song writing. It still gets me misty eyed every time I hear it, which is pretty frequently. I'm so glad you go into these videos raw, it add so much to the experience that you're just as caught off guard as we were the first time. Keep doing what you're doing man.

Really happy you reacted to this song. As others have already broken everything down to you on this one, I want to make a recommendation for the next songs. After the release of End of a Life, and after her stream where she broke down the lyrics herself in a very emotional way (“I guess I just wanted some of them to be proud of me”), she got in contact with some old friends from that scene and did a colab with them. They produced two songs together, Graveyard Shift and CROWN. Graveyard Shift being a more lighthearted "in lore" song about their vtuber themes (like Q) CROWN being more about the lyrics and kind of a continuation of the same story and one of my favorite songs. If I had to recommend only one it would definitely be CROWN, but they are both great.

or to quote one of the top comments, since I am bad with words myself: "You know what i find wholesome about this? The fact that Calli a month ago expressed her sorrow over losing her old heroes in "End of a Life" but now "Crown" just gives off this vibes that she's been reunited with some long time friends that she didn't end up losing as she shot her way to fame."

By the way, 2 things I would like to had on what you said in the video. 1- You said you never thought a song by Calli would makes you emotionnal, then you have to listen to cursed night by Calli, it is even more emotional. 2- When you talked about her voice, it made me remember, she once said she thought her voice was ok at best for rapping, and really bad for singing. I'm not sure if she still think that way even though so many people love her work.

Congratulations on 200k! It's a heavy song filled with a lot of feelings. Probably an important one if you want to "get" part of where she's coming from. If I could recommend another heavy song it'd be Watame's My Song.

Okay my friend, it's time you react to my oshi, Watame. She's the fluffiest, loveliest, bubbliest sheep you will ever know but she has known some hardship in her life, like so many of us and it really comes through in her songs. Every single time I hear her sing it fills my heart until bursting and I just want to keep doing better thanks to her. I'm not kidding when I say I think she deserves the world. The first song you react to HAS to be either "My Song" or "Everlasting Soul". These are by far her most powerful songs and really showcases both her powerful singing and the emotions she conveys. Personally I prefer "My Song" but it's REALLY close. Secondly she has done a few projects with Calli and they've actually done more than a few collab videos and apparently really like to sing together as well as just hanging out. Their first one was "Cloudy Sheep" but recently they made another called "Reaper vs Sheep" that I think is even better and an absolute headbopper; fun in so many ways and you can just tell the ladies had fun making it. Calli has been teaching Watame to rap at Watames request and she's really taken to it so incredibly well!

YESSSS! 🔥 You react to everything I love Massive thanks to you You are awesome!! 🔥🔥 And yes you guessed the passport thing right Its about the japanese underground rap scene breaking down during covid But she getting a lot of fame due to being acceped into Hololive And now a lot of former rap friends got jealous of her and she herself sometimes thinks she doesnt deserve this fame And therefore sees herself as some kind of villain , yet just wants to be loved by them In this song she sings about sometimes wishing to be back to this easy going carefree times But on the other hands What she has right now is everything she always wanted It would be dumb to discard all of that right? Thats everything I remember from the breakdown Hope it helps 🔥

Finally! You've heard my absolute #1 favourite song by Calli! Can you believe that she almost didn't release this song? She felt it wasn't good enough and was too personal to her, so she didn't think anyone would like it! Calli actually cried on stream when she was talking about the song after release, because of how much she wanted her friends to be proud of her, but most of them saw her as a sellout for choosing Hololive. Yes, the song is about her putting herself out there, flying to Japan with no idea if she can make it or not, but knowing she wanted to be part of the underground rap scene in Japan, along side many of her heroes. How she forced herself, as a foreigner, into this extremely niche market and managed to make friends and get recognizes while working 3 jobs just to make ends meet. And then the pandemic happened, and many of the underground clubs got shut down, and most people who were her friends and people she looked up to ended up giving up on their dreams and going to find office jobs, while she got really lucky, she applied to Hololive and made it and became really successful! (She is like #4 most subscribed VTuber in the world). And how she misses that part of her life, and at the same time feels like she has no right to be sad about losing all those friends since SHE was the one who chose Hololive and turned her back on everything. It's just an amazing and personal song, and most of the lyrics very much mean exactly what they say in this one.

End of a Life feels like her best song or at least her most poignant. People have a lot of different phases in their lives - some good, some bad - but a constant is that we all too often leave these behind. For people that chase their creativity and where it takes them, these days can be all too transient and, just too, the companionship within them. In the end there is no assurance you can reach your goals or even make it back to what you sacrificed for it. With something as new, uncertain and niche as vtubing it can be exciting and exceptionally scary. I hope people will keep in mind that there a lot of challenges in life and apathy leads to a lot of ends, and most of them are not positive ones. Nobody else can "do" for you after all, and even for things beyond just yourself. Enjoy your oshi's music? Streams? Videos? Spread them as wide as you can. Also at least be kind to the people in their circle, they rely on each other being healthy and happy even if they don't often directly interact. Vtubing is already incredibly difficult to be successful in and a bad atmosphere hurts everyone. If you enjoyed End of a Life and it's message, I once again recommend watching Watame's My Song. It's incredibly heavy and reflects what it means to struggle with a dream you don't want to give up. Being a story of Watame's actual history with music and her hopes, she went all-in on the production and made a really beautiful piece with an anime level MV. It's a real reflection of many years filled with tears. We're really proud she's been able to reach at some of her dreams... her song even got picked up as an OP for a TV show for a while! Since she wants to keep going and aim higher for things like the Budokan, I'll keep recommending her here and hope that at least a few more people pick up her music!

People in comments already told the story of this song. I just want to add she cried when told about this song and her feelings in her stream after releasing it. This hs heavy. Especially when you hear it from "strong human". "Red" also about her thoughts and feelings. Towa's *Pallete* and *Fact* are great. First is emotional and second more banger. Marine's "マリン出航". Not lewd! SFW, no cringe. More like anime opening. Old fashion one, I'd say. She on her 3rd anniversary did concert few days ago in showa style (tv shows 60s-80s). Crt filter, 4x3 resolution, announcers, old music. Very beautiful. Many songs with guests including Gawr Gura who sang her favorite song " Ride on time" with her. *ゲスト多数!新髪型お披露目!】昭和老人会♪宝鐘マリン3周年記念歌謡祭*. 1 hour long, so it's not for YT. But i recommend to see it even if not to watch :)

8:20 The passport just represents that she is, as she performs in Japan, a foreigner. Calliope went to Japan because she fell in love with the Japanese underground rap scene, which she describes in her lyrics "It’s when you shoved yourself into a crowded place That you turned around and found yourself in love in outer space" As for what she left behind, this song is supposed to be about how people thought that she left "that life" after becoming a vtuber.

You asked about the passport; that in particular refers to how, before she made the move to Japan, she visited Japan as much as she could for the opportunity to participate in that scene (initially as an audience member). If you want to hear her explain the song herself, I highly recommend taking the time to do so. (maybe on a stream) It's one of the most heartfelt discussions/breakdowns one can see. It's at 34:24 in her stream titled "【NEW SONG CHAT】Talking About the New Song... Plus, Membership Reboot!"

Every single lyric in this song is personal to Calli. She loved underground Japanese rap, so she moved to Japan. She didn't know the first thing, really, about how to make it big there and so she made some friends with other 'small time' indie rappers and sang 'in every bar' at the night, 'laughing at their dreams' of making it big. It kept her sane in the midst of just being small time no matter how hard she worked, only obtaining a cult following at best -- you can still find her pre-hololive channel on YT and she even has posted to it recently, but I'm not here to talk about that. Eventually, their time to have fun came to an end -- the pandemic closed 'and shattered every bar that we had played.' A lot of her friends went back to working 9-5 jobs in order to pay the bills, 'overworked and underpaid where they think an office is a coffin until off is where you're laid.' She kept working on her music, though, and eventually, Hololive found her and gave her a chance. She took it and became immediately successful with hundreds of thousands, now millions, of fans. She lost friends because of this, because of the 'villain she potrayed.' They got jealous, especially the ones she used to look up to, her old heroes. Some didn't think she 'earned it,' when she clearly worked hard for it, and success of any kind is equal parts skill and luck, especially on a platform like KZbin and / or as a performer / artist. She clearly misses those days and even wonders, from time to time what it would be like if she 'missed her chance, did not ascend,' but knows she would always have to take this chance, so if she, for some reason, never did, she says 'that is the me I can never befriend' because it'd be stupid not to. However, the reason I say you can tell she still wishes she could go back to those days at times is because during the whole rant of 'stop the pity party, listen,' you can hear how aggressive she is being to herself. She is trying to convince herself of everything in that entire section, that she 'doesn't get to say I miss you.' But when you get to the last lyric 'what is there to miss?' you can tell the sudden cut in being aggressive. She's given up on trying to convince herself; while she knows she's in a better place right now than she'd ever be if she didn't take the chance, she just can't but help to miss her friends. She can't help to miss the 'simple days' of just playing in bars with friends. And it's okay to, as long as you know that your life now is still better than back then. That's why she has the lyric 'I'll be waiting for you.' She wants her friends that scorned her to be successful, still. Despite their bitterness to her about her success, they're still her friends and she wants them to be able to fulfill their dreams like she was able to, and hopefully they can become friends again when they become successful. She'd rather they be friends regardless, but knows it won't happen, so she takes the next best approach, because she still appreciates all they did for her while she was small-time. Then, at the end... "Waking up to the real life." She's done reminiscing and thinking about the past; she has to move on... but when she does, eventually, all things come to an end. She wonders 'is it over,' has her fame run out and sputtered? Has *she* finally ran out of gas and sputtered? In any case, yeah, this is my second favourite Calli song, and my favourite lyrical song of hers. "The Grim Reaper is a Live Streamer" is my favourite one just because it's SUCH a good bop and toe-tapping song, and the visuals are just as fun as the song and remind me of Persona, as I said in my last comment. Just thought I'd give you some lyrical breakdowns of this song and their meaning because there's so much of it packed into it when you know her history.

Recommendation: - *Katanagatari* ending 1(underrated anime has 12 endings one for every episode, ed 11 is also good and has more views than ending 1, I think you need to add it to your list to react when you are over with all the popular anime shows) - *No game no life opening* 1 (Was at some point the most popular anime opening on youtube, like 150-200 mil views or more but it got deleted the video, super popular song and it's good as well, great for views) - *Scissor Seven* opening 1 & 3 (Both openings are great in terms of soundtrack, both rock, op 3 I'd say it's more your style) [ It's an anime acquired by netflix, dubbed in multiple languages, best is english and chinese (if there's a japanese one don't watch it), the anime is about "jackie-chan" if it was an anime, an assassin who lost his memory, it's comedy + fights and season 3 gets super dark (no comedy in season 3) ]. you can add first and third recommendation to a list for 'later' when your finished with "cool/popular" ones and second one I bet is already on your radar

This type of US-Japanese mixed content hits home every damn time. PS, on a similar note, Please check out the anime 'Banana fish'. Without spoilers, it's a realistic anime with gruesomely dark themes, essentially showing us the dark side of big cities like New York, the side that we dont usually see. A real masterpiece by Yoshida, delving into the depths of human psychology and the cruelties life) We think that we're aware of these sensitive topics, until the manga gets published in 1985 (banana fish) and animated in 2018. What was seen as an extremely unconventional and risky anime in the 80s was found to be so accurate when it was released that it got really popular at the time. I feel life you'd really enjoy it.
