I'm still trying to get my painting skills back after a long 5 month hiatus. It feels so good to be painting again.
This painting of a rainy day was fun to paint. I started a bit too dark and needed to lighten most everything up. I need to get used to the shift in color with Gouache again.

Yes do! It is t bad gouache. I have only one color, the lime green that is somewhat transparent but otherwise it is great for sketchbooks.

Your gouache paintings always make me want to get mine out and try again. Your paintings are beautiful. Mine never seem to get out of the hot mess stage. 😅🙃 But I will keep trying.. Thank you so much for sharing.

Well that’s one of the nice things about gouache. You can layer. Trust me I messed up several times but just went over it again. Just work in a sketchbook. It doesn’t need to be expensive paper. In fact this book is The Perfect Sketchbook by Etchr. The cotton paper is very absorbent which can make working in gouache more difficult. The cheap books are great for gouache. Just devote a book to practice. I have an ugly journal which is light paper, maybe 90 lb tops and I use it for all sorts of scribbling etc. and gouache. You don’t need to share it with anyone. Don’t get discouraged. This is why I say what I say at the end of every video. Just be courageous and paint with wild abandon. It’ll come. It took me years.

Another very nice piece, Sharon and I have to say that I, for one, can't see any evidence of you 'being out of practice' with gouache. The one bit that pulled me up short was when you started adding the rain effects - I would be so afraid of ruining an already very good painting by adding the rain. I guess that's why you end every video by advising us all to be courageous and paint with wild abandon! :-) Incidentally, I like the time lapse approach, where real time would make for a very long video, but I did find it useful to know how long the start to finish time was for you - thanks for adding that tidbit of information. And also thanks for the time and effort to produce, edit and upload for us all to enjoy. All the best, Brian.

Well thank you Brian. I’m hoping to improve. I feel very rusty. And the rain was going on wiggly which is why I turned my book sideways. I don’t get too hung up in a sketchbook when things don’t turn out. I find that’s the nice thing about sketchbooks. I find it kind of funny that people get so hung up on them looking perfect. I think they should be about practice. And progress. 😊

Very nice painting and it’s so good to see you are back! I will bet that you really are enjoying painting again. It’s so rewarding and fun. Question: that brush that is at the top of the painting at the end ~ the red one with the uneven edges that is good to paint grasses etc. Can you tell me the name of it and who makes it? I’ve been wanting to get one. Thank you Sharon!

It’s called a trainer brush. Takes a bit of practice but works great. smile.amazon.com/Princeton-Velvetouch-Mixed-Media-Brush-Watercolor/dp/B01DMYT7M2/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3339CJW2RWR6K&keywords=Grainer+brush&qid=1675921402&sprefix=grainer+brush%2Caps%2C122&sr=8-2

I have the Himi set like yours but they've dried out. I'm new at gouache and thought it would be ok if they're dry like watercolors? Hope they're not ruined.

Mine were drying out. Add water to the top and let them sit and soften about 20 minutes. Then get something small like a long nail, or knife and start stirring. It’ll take a while to soften them but you can restore them. I will be showing on video how I do it. Maybe i can get that one out early next week.
