Combine grafting and air layering techniques in one single step and you can obtain several plants from the same rootstock.
What to do when you receive cuttings from several varieties and don't have enough rootstocks?
It's possible to graft several branches of the same rootstock and air layer them in the same year. You can even obtain multi varieties fruit trees using this propagation method.
Check my other videos on Whip and Tongue Grafting Technique and Air layering to know more details about these techniques.

I showed this and the chip-bud grafting video to my 84 year old grandfather. His eyes lit up and he got really excited and chatty. He said that these were interesting videos about 5 times, which is rare and high praise. Thanks a lot, your videos are great, informative and gave me a touching moment with my family!

You are so Profesional and skilful that the only thing that remains to be emphasized is the date that you do a graft or airlayer and the date that some results should be expected. I know you do indicate these in some videos but I think you should bold these in every video. Knowing when to do something is of utmost importance and when to expect result is even more so. Thank you brother.

Can I do air layering at some kind of pear tree? It's a variety that I want to save because I only have two grafted branches in a pears tree which is another variety. very good video
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can. Remember that most fruit trees (pears included) are not propagated this way. Not that they are difficult to air layer, but because they, usually, don't grow well in their own roots, so they are grafted to resistant rootstocks instead.

When air layering pear trees, is it a good idea to do this once it has already leaved out in spring or before it does? Also, how long do I need to leave it there before checking it and cutting the new tree and roofs off the main tree??? Thanks so much!

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын

@JSacadura

I use a light potting mix but other earth mixes can be used or even other substrates, like coco coir. It's important that the medium lets the roots breathe, so it must not be too dense when wet.

Can a Air Layered plant go directly into the ground? Thanks, Jim.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
If the rootball is well developed and the soil conditions are not extreme, you can plant it directly. Be sure to reduce the number of leaves so they can be sustained by the roots (too many leaves can't be supported by a small rootball).

Obrigado
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 3 жыл бұрын

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 3 жыл бұрын

Use any good light potting mix to root or any inert medium like coco coir and don't overwater. If you use a heavy mix that holds too much water the roots might rot.

You don't see raffia used these days. I like rubber as it doesn't girdle..
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, A jones. Over here raffia is still widely used and available (unlike rubber ties, if you can believe it - i have to buy them in the internet, from Spain, if i really want them). So, i' have grown accustomed to it and love it. It's thin and can go around the lower buds in the scion, without covering or destroying them. It can also help correct a few grafting mistakes, being able to 'pull' and join two end pieces that were apart, helping them to form a cambium more easily and, with some grafting techniques, like bark grafts, rubber ties are just not strong enough to do a good job (at least that is my opinion). Furthermore, raffia is strong enough to support the scion, even if it's knocked by a clumsy arm, a bird uses it as a perch or a strong wind tries to break it down. To me, these are advantages that make up nicely for the potential girdling problem it might have, in some cases, if you forget to make a cut when checking the grafts, after a couple of months (which is a rare occurrence, as the raffia, being a natural material, tends to break down before any girdling has a chance to occur ). But, i say in the video that you can use other materials to tie the graft, like tape and rubber ties, so in the end, it's the grafter choice. Thanks again for your comment.
@ajones8699
@ajones8699 5 жыл бұрын
I used to just use parafilm, but last year I bought bands and I doubt I will ever not use them in the future. I imagine the results with bands and raffia are very similar. But I think bands are easy to use,but that does not help if they are difficult to get.what part of the world are you in?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
I'm in Portugal. The results are almost identical between both materials but if i want to use rubber bands I can only get them through internet from Spain or another country. Don't know a single store that has them over here. Using just parafilm is risking it, as the graft is not secure enough to resist most situations that occur and that will ruin it.
@ajones8699
@ajones8699 5 жыл бұрын
Finding grafting materials is harder than it should be.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 5 жыл бұрын
You are quite right. For instance, there is simply no way of finding Grafting Parafilm over here (in Spain you can find the Parafilm M that i find less convenient to use and is slightly different (and more expensive). 3 years ago i bought a box of 6 rolls of Grafting Parafilm in the UK. Last year, i had to bought it in the USA!! as the UK store didn't have it any more. And, for me, Parafilm is essential when we talk about successful grafts and even successful rooting (i can't think of rooting my fig cuttings without it anymore). If i go to the local agricultural specialized chains they only have Buddy Tape (and not a very good one, in ridiculous small rolls of 5 meters and they cost 5 times the price i can get Parafilm for, even from abroad, including shipping costs). It's not easy, as you say, but if we want great results we have to use the right materials.
