Amazing review! Very Helpful. Even as I have only ever bought 1 tablet 4 years ago. I went with a xp pen star 06 because I read fairly good reviews for it and it seemed to have lots of pen pressure, a bulk of buttons, as well as no screen(heard there was issues with color correcting on many screens as well as random pixel dead areas, thought it might be easier to just start without the screen), and batteryless pen. So I went for it and have had a great experience with it. They seem to update fairly often as well as being very kind and quick when I have needed help. They also seem like they might be newer and are working hard to appeal and help for everyone. Love it! I use it with gimp and inkscape on my pc desktop. The versatility of having it plugged in or using the wifi connector is super nice! Also never needing to charge a pen. AMAZING! The battery also lasts for a long time and thus far the build quality is perfect. I highly recommend(that being said I have heard of other people claiming the cursor might skip sometimes like it isn't registering for select moments but this hasn't been my experience and I am not sure of their setup or software versions.).

I had a Gaomon PD screen tablet....never use it, I hate it. I went back to a non screen Huion GS610 tablet and I love it. You don't need some extremely expensive equipment, a tablet with some pressure sensitivity, and the effort to learn and you can do it. Feng Zhu, one of the most respected concept artists in the world, still uses an Intuos 3 tablet 90% of the time. If it's good enough for him, why not for literally anyone else? I love having just one lightweight device, I can take it with me or use it with my laptop, plug it in and just go. One wire, that's it, instead of some heavy wire squid.

Any Linux viewers - if you're not going to get Wacom, the Huions work very nicely with the Wacom configuration on Gnome and KDE after you install digimend drivers. I had a Monoprice which is a rebrand of another and that didn't work with the Wacom configuration. Gaomon does not have any official support at all for Linux. Wacom is pretty well supported. At least, my daughter has the 13" display Wacom and it works VERY well on Fedora 32 with the KDE desktop. She just needs to hit windows key-shift-1 to make the pen be properly aligned to the display and everything works perfectly.

Thanks for the video. I’ve been thinking about getting a grahics tablet to limit the investment as of now (blender hobbyist - thanks for your tutorials), and I have 2 more questions: - would a small wacom get me anywhere, or should I just go for the M size? In other words, is it really worth the price difference (which is actually not that big)? Sculpting in blender with a mouse is super hard (but I might just be bad at sculpting :D) - as I own an iPad, could I use it as a display tablet (not excluding the first question, but for the test)? I think the "plug into mobile" is not the point but to plug in to Android (which are tablets) it makes much more sense to plug a drawing tablet into a large tablet and use that as a screen. I have one strange wacky thing to add to drawing tablets. Both me and my GF have Wacom Intuos Pros, the only difference is that I left the plastic cover on mine while she immediately removed it from hers. Not sure if it's because of that but I'm using the same pen tip for the last 2 years, while she has to change hers every few weeks.. :D

I was worried that these types of things were going to be crazy expensive but they aren’t that bad. Especially when your first recommendation is just like $60. I’m going to try and get better at general texturing (I would be using it for 3D graphics) and just better at 3D art before I start investing in better technology. I at least want to know that I can get better before I start getting the tools to do so. I will probably get the one by Wacom because I’m not looking for some big and ultra powerful tablet. Just something to help up the texturing of my art and hopefully games in the future. Despite this being a fair bit away, I do thank you for making this. Question - would you recommend a tablet for texturing that's not just fully hand-painted? Like, drawing over photo textures and such? Among other things, I'm into retro graphics and wonder if that would be a noticeable improvement over mouse, or would the need to switch between both outweigh the positives. Also, would you say it's helpful when working in Substance? Only really used the trial for more basic objects, so not sure how much there's actual hand-painting involved other than masking off parts using different materials and how much is just using stencils and smart masks. I'm debating just dipping my toes with one of the smaller tablets (the 6x4 inchers, not one of the even smaller ones) before going for one of the medium-sized ones, since I *think* my requirements are lower than for full-blown illustration or sculpting. Not sure if that's actually correct, though. Not saying I'd never try either, but that's lower priority for me.

I got A Gaomon S620 about a month ago. I find that the surface of the pad is too sliperery just like other tablets. It does feel a little uncomfortable doing drawings with it compared to paper. It is hard to control the pen with your hand. I have at least partially fixed this problem. I just got some fine grade emery cloth (or fine sandpaper) and gently scratched the surface up, down, sideways and at a 45 degree angle in both directions. I think that it has helped it to feel more like paper because there is more friction. It is not perfect but to my mind I think that it has improved. The pen nibs are not going to last so long. The nibs don't cost much anyway. The surface also looks much more messy and ugly. It will definately attract more dirt now as well (I will turn it upside down when it is not in use to reduce this problem a little). However, I now have a much higher quality tablet. Considering that you have to pay about £500 or £600 for a reMarkable 2 note taking tablet to get that paper feel I think that it is worth taking the chance that you might brake the tablet to make this improvement. I did not brake my tablet when I scratched the surface gently. You do this at your own risk of course. The Gaomon is so cheap I think that it is worth the risk for the benefits. I think that the extra friction I have got on the surface has doubled or tripled the value of my tablet now. It does seem a little easier to control the pen with the extra friction. If my Gaomon does not last so long now I don't care because it is so cheap. The extra friction I created is certainly not too much. Maybe I need to scratch it with courser emery paper to make the friction a little more. I will leave my Gaomon alone for the time being. I don't want to scratch too deeply or I might brake my Gaomon. I notice that if you want something that has a nice paper feel to it for taking notes then a reMarkable 2 has the best surface for taking notes. I saw that the manufacturers deliberately made the surface have more friction just like paper has (this inspired me to use emery paper on my Gaomon) (however, the softwate for the reMarkable 2 is very poor and they have not improved its weeknesses in 6 months. So, buy a Boox Note Air instead and put a screen protector on it to increase its friction instead if you want a note pad). I would not know where you would get a screen protector that increases friction on the Gaomon S620 so I scratched the surface with fine grade emery paper instead. Best wishes.

Currently running Blender on a new, but under-powered i5 laptop. Couldn't see how I could justify spending too much on a tablet when the dollars could be better used saving for a decent desktop setup. Bought myself the cheapest and smallest Wacom Intuos so I could dip a toe and test the waters. Tablet worked pretty much straight out of the box on my machine, but since I run Linux I am unable to take advantage of any of the included software, nor find any way of getting under the bonnet to tweak settings and preferences. Bit annoying to be asked to pay the same price as those who can take advantage of all the so-called bonus features. Perhaps Grant could create a video regarding which tablets run best/are supported on Linux? Seems a no-brainer to me because there is so much info on how well in many areas Blender runs under Linux, compared with other operating systems. Not complaining too much though, I beat the one hour learning curve by 30 minutes or so and found it pretty easy to look at the screen while using the pen. Hardest thing about navigating around my laptop is getting to menu and other items in the corners or right near the edge of my laptop display. Scrolling up and down with the pen is a bit of a PITA. This tablet is perfect for my needs but my one major gripe is with the pen. i'm finding it hard to hold so the buttons are constantly a simple finger movement away. No quickly differentiating the buttons of the pen by sight because the entire thing is black. No governing how I'm holding it is offered by any of its shape or feel. Why not have a raised dot or two that function in a similar way to those applied to the "F" and "J" keys on most keyboards?

Great video! If you had to choose between One by Wacom and Xp-Pen Deco 01 for drawing/sculpt, which would you choose? Unfortunately, things can get quite expansive where I live so I can't mess around :( Thanks for the video anyway man, cheers!

There's not much in it really. Wacom 1 will probably be easy from a driver's perspective. The XP pen has more features
@Luis-Guilherme4 жыл бұрын
@@grabbitt You are right. I use Ubuntu (free software ftw!) and the official XP-Pen drivers for Linux is so limited. You can't configure the express key and the other features that come with the tablet are unusable, like the tilt function. So you pretty much get a Wacom again haha. The non-official drivers currently barely supports this model and still have a lot of issues. So basically nothing will work out of the box. I'm just letting it here for anyone with the same questions. Guess I'll get the Wacom, still don't know. Thank you anyway Grant!

Hey! I wanted to ask you about the drawing experience with Xp-Pen. Does the pen have a lot of wobble or springiness to it? And how does the drawing experience compare to that of the Wacom Intuos Pro's firm stylus. Would you recommend Xp-pen or Huion for a drawing experience closest to Wacom? And any specific models. Thanks a lot :)

Hi so did you end up buying the XP Pen Deco 1 V2? How is the stylus?
@saarrrk3 жыл бұрын
@@dickyderp819 Hey! Okay so I ended up buying the tablet. I really like the stylus, the tip is springy but not as much as my older huion q11K wireless v1. I might soon upgrade to the cheapest cintiq model. I would definitely recommend you though to look out for the latest Huion RTP-700, RTS-300, RTM-500 too. They seem to have pens with the least wobble however there aren't many reviews for those on KZbin, since they are so new. Another option may be checking out display tablets from huion with the pw517 stylus which seems to have very little wobble too. If your primary use is sculpting or digital painting, the XP pen is awesome. However I think a pen with even less wobble would be more suited if you intend to do concept sketching or dynamic sketching, because I feel the wobble tends to throw you off a little, say it becomes hard to draw closing ellipses with the pen wobble etc. If you want a great sketching experience, One by Wacom would serve you well too, it's great for sketching. And a display tablet would be even better since it would be closest to your natural drawing experience on paper and you can transfer much more of your traditional sketching and drawing experience and expertise easily with that. Sorry this was too long, but hope it helps. Cheers!

Quick question for anyone interested in answering, I am going to buy a tablet soon and am looking at the XP Pen Innovator 16 and then the Wacom One. I already have Wacom Drivers installed on my computer and honestly 13 inches might be better in my current space that won't change for most likely 2 more years. But most people tell me that I definitely want the 16 inches. Does anyone have any experience with either of those tablets specifically? Also if I do get the XP Pen, is it easy to remove the Wacom drivers? Thanks ahead of time for making the video Grant, I am taking your course on GameDev TV and appreciate the effort you put into it.

Yeah it's easy to remove the drivers. Is go for the innovator personally but I can understand your need for space

Just always love watching your videos. Also I would use a tablet to draw on my phone. I don't have a stylus for this model but love drawing on Sketchbook, especially on beautiful days out and about. Dragging a tablet around might be cumbersome (as would dragging my workstation around I imagine) but might still give it a go.

Huhu, I want to start studying game design next year and have to hand in a digital portfolio to be accepted, but I never used a drawing tablet before. My parents bought me a pen, so I could draw on my laptop, but it's not good to draw with it at all. I figured out that I probably need pressure levels because I don't like that drawing on a screen doesn't feels like drawing normally to me. I want to practice drawing digitally to get better in it so I decided to buy a tablet but there are so many, which makes me feel uncomfortable about which one I should take. Pls help 😅

@@grabbitt Thank you for your advice. I bought the xp pen Innovator 16 because I like its many short keys and the wheel. Besides, I noticed that I can choose from tree programs: ArtRage5, openCanvas and Cartoon Animator 4 (12-month version). I don't know which one is the best for beginners so I hoped for some advice again 😅 Moreover, I thought about buying clip studio paint as well, because somebody told me that it's actually quite good for drawing and creating animations and also one of the cheaper options 🤔
