Remember kids, distracted erasing may cause lost slant asymptotes. Seriously though, you have been helping me so much as I am venturing back into college at 31. I wish I had teachers like you when I was in high school. I may have loved math back then. Better late than never I suppose. Finding your videos has been a blessing and I hope you are well. Thank you Mr. Tarrou!

@9:48 For a quick reference to find the nature of the graph outside the known region we've found so far; differentiate (by quotient rule), then let f '(x) = 0 to find the stationary points. If you find one into the first quadrant, then it's fair to assume the shape of the graph by letting f(x) be just less than and just more than the value of x for the stationary point. With those 3 x values (1 for the stationary point, 1 for x> & 1 for x< the stationary x value) you can then finish the graph.

what if the degree of the numerator is greater than 1? 'say, two or three? What asymptote can we get from it?
@dinin_alone9 жыл бұрын
You're awesome!! I have one question... A rational function won't cross the vertical asymptote but sometimes crosses the horizontal asymptote. Does it also never cross the slant asymptote? Thanks again!
@profrobbob9 жыл бұрын
+Quantum Yes, a graph can cross its slant asymptote or horizontal asymptote. To find the point(s) where this happens, set the function equal to the SA or HA, and solve for x. Any valid solution(s) will be the x-coordinate of the intersection of the function and the asymptote. It can NEVER cross a vertical asymptote since the function is undefined there.
