"A staple of the live repertoire since its debut in 1978, Shakedown Street was always a highly anticipated song to catch live, as it always delivered a long, inspired jam. Usually opening a first or second set, this one is from the second set of the final show of the Dead' tour with Bob Dylan that ran July 4-26, 1987, featuring six shows, three on each coast." - David Lemieux

My dad is a huge dead fan. Ive always struggled to appreciate them. Though I remember when Jerry died vividly. I was like 8 staying in Wildwood, NJ. This, however, is my favorite Grateful Dead song.

I love when Jerry’s glasses would slide down the bridge of his nose, and you clearly see his gaze across the band. As if conducting the group with a steady gaze; a lift of the brow; a purposeful sound. Only to disappear behind it all… ❤

My most memorable Shakedown Street is June 22, 1991 in Chicago. My late-husband and I were about 30 rows back on the field. Everyone was supplied a rickety old folding chair to sit on, but of course no one sat - and you couldn't dance standing on the field because so many people were up on the chairs dancing the sound was too muffled if you tried to land dance. Consequently, we danced our asses off while trying to maintain our balance. We weren't exactly spring chickens at that point, well, I guess 34 is young enough. Sounds Real young now lol and I'd give anything to be 34 again and with the love of my life. (I lost him suddenly/instantly to a heart attack in 2005 at 48) Anyway... Brent Mydland has recently died, and Vince Welnick was just getting his feet wet on keyboards. So Bruce Hornsby had joined in to help out. What a night! I love what Bruce added to the mix with superb keyboards and the occasional accordion. He had such a special rapport with Jerry. Remember the fabulous Moody Blues album Every Good Boy Deserves Favour? The cover had the little blonde boy spellbound by the wizard looking old man. And it always reminded me of Bruce, spellbound by Jerry. Any-ways, the Shakedown Street that night was epic. It was simply the best we had ever heard in our lives and we rocked out on those rickety old chairs like it was the last dance on Earth. I'll never forget that night, one of my best Grateful Dead memories. 🥀🥀

June 22nd. Summertime, baby!! Right? Drove up there from about three hours south wearing nothing but shorts and a t-shirt and about froze my *ss off. Windy and cold that night. Yeah, that was a good Shakedown. Second song, I believe. I didn't have great seats but I didn't care. I could see ya'll down there on the field. Love the crowd reaction on the opening notes of "Hell in a Bucket". Great show and Hornsby was a great replacement. Good set list, too. A lot of my favorites. I remember "Terrapin" as being a highlight. Mostly because of the crowd reaction and the band feeding off it. Chicago seemed to really like that song.

Definitely, maybe bc I saw my first Dead show in 86 Alpine Valley , what a awesome weekend The parking lot camping was a riot!! Saw them again in 87 then in 89-90 at Rosemont Horizon in Chicago. Loved this era of the Dead My greatest hits I'd been listening to in the early 80s came to life after experiencing a Dead show multiple nights and the parking lot was magical!!! Still digging bon Dead and Co. Keeping the music alive, it's different but still super cool! How about the Sphere shows?!?! Best 3 nights I've had in a long time RIP JG BM and GD members

Yea, stadium shows are not the best sound. Lots of reflected sound making it muddy. It also depends where you are in the stadium. Actually California Dead Heads got to see a few Shakedowns that year. They played Shakedown at Ventura, and Long Beach also. And I think they played Shakedown in New York, Chicago, Philly and Pittsburgh that year. And they may have been more that I missed.

As I understand it, Jerry García took the band's name from the legend of a traveler who came across a wandered dead man because he had not received a proper burial. In the homeland of Jerry's grandfather and father, (Galicia) there is the legend of the "Santa Compaña", which is very similar. Could he have been inspired by her for the name?

Bobby’s short - for those youngsters out there- are classic 70’s hippie cut offs. Why waste a good pair of dilapidated jeans? One cuts them off. A staple of both boys and girls. Mountain wear. Boda bags. Swimming hole. Reefer. Cold beers. Friends camping. Dead on the radio.
