No band can touch the Grateful Dead when they are "on"

Another great selection of what I like to call "primal Dead". As others have said, this was the first song Bobby wrote. The line "the heat came 'round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day" is in reference to an incident where he and some other Pranskters dropped water balloons on some cops. After said dousing, Bobby walked past them grinning, and they arrested him. So the story goes. The second verse about the bus has to do with Bobby's adventures with the Merry Pranksters in the early/mid 60's aboard the 'Furthur' bus with Ken Kesey, Cowboy Neal (Cassady), & co.

Garcia and the Grateful Dead will be remembered for as long as there is music. In part because they recorded more than anyone, and in part because he was a fantastic guitarist. Check out The Eleven if you're looking for hard rock dead, or primal dead as it was known.

There are some Dead tunes, particularly during this time, that just seemed to capture the essence of LSD, physiologically and sonically. As you continue your adventure, be sure to check out the incomparable “Dark Star/St Stephen/The Eleven/Turn On Your Lovelight” combo from the “Live/Dead” album. Recorded over 50 years ago, mind blowing.

I think you’d like the Viola Lee Blues>Feedback>And We Bid You Goodnight from 5-2-70. It’s a scorcher

Perk you were on the right track, There are three sections to this composition, the very first ever by Bob Weir, and quite an opus. Of all the shows I saw, I never saw a complete suite, just the middle section sung by Bob, "Spanish lady comes to me and she lays on me this rose", which we Heads called The Other One. In the 80's and early 90's it was usually played coming out of the Drums/Space section of the second set, a lot of times followed by Wharf Rat>Throwing Stones and Not Fade Away. Plus an encore. Always made for a great show. And BTW, I did enjoy your reaction quite a bit, I'm happy you were satisfied. Wharf Rat is a slower Jerry tune that builds to a crescendo, while Throwing Stones and Not Fade Away are more rockers.

This was my intro to the dead that wasn’t studio albums. I was probably 8 or 9 and used to borrow this one and Europe ‘72 from my dads collection to listen to them I’m on my new CD player in my room.

I don’t know who’s advising him… there are better recordings of these numbers. Something a little more modern would’ve been better

Good timing on this one as the Oregon Country Fair is this weekend in Veneta. It was started in the 60's by Ken Kesey and all those guys and was originally called the Old Renaissance Fair, the Dead played there in 72, and 82, but had to cancel their 92 appearance. The site of the famous 8-27-72 show.

Very nice! I'd love to see you do the "So Many Roads" from 7/9/1995 because it was one of the last songs Jerry sang with the Dead before he died a month later. (I think the last was Black Muddy River).

As this shows, not only did the band have different eras with different members, Jerry had different eras. Young Jerry was very electrified ☺️ It’s personally my favorite dead era. Next is late 70’s. Then early 80’s. But there will always be something extra special about 60’s Jerry.
