@@vitalentity1074 I just returned from Greece last week. I have been to Nafplio twice over the last 6 years and also stayed in Tolo (shout out to Dimitri that runs the Apollon hotel). I did find things more expensive since my last visit a few years ago. I've travelled to many locations in Greece. It's beautiful. People are friendly. Food qualify is top level. It's safe. I don't live there but didn't notice the depression you mentioned. Where are you seeing this? And where is the violence? This does concern me.

Food and grocery were quite affordable in Greece back in the 1980s-1990s, but on the other hand electronics and clothing were expensive. After adopting the euro as currency, prices got up 4-5 times in grocery items while electronics and clothing etc were more affordable due to imports from Europe and China (but still a little more expensive than western Europe). But biggest rise in consumer prices happened in the last two years such as with olive oil and other supermarket products. This rise in prices has happened in North america, Europe too so it is not only a greek phenomenon. Also in Greece, another issue is the expensive petrol price which is about 2 euros per liter. Finally, the wages are between 800 and 1200 euros for the majority of people, a lot less than north and western European countries.

Hi Daniel! I stumbled upon your channel due to the love of Nafplio! You’re doing great work with your Greek lifestyle channel and in turn, promoting the town, businesses, and Greece as a whole. As a Canadian/Greek living abroad, the goal is moving back as we start winding down our working years. Having roots in Nafplio and frequenting the town whenever we can, it’s always nice to see the scenery, town, and locals when we are afar, and your channel helps us feel connected. Say hello to Mr.Panagioti, from a viewer in Montreal, as I frequented his shop last month. He sells good quality products and I can say the Anthotiro and wine are amazing! Thank you for the YT work, as it is an effort; and for bringing us a piece of paradise into our home’s.

In one month I come for a visit. We will be in Athens mostly but we have some sightseeing trips planned with my son who has not been to Greece yet. The last time I was there was 2019 and we checked prices in a large grocery store as part of research to see if we could afford to move to Greece in retirement. As you mentioned, everywhere in the world things are more expensive. I look forward to rechecking the prices while I enjoy a few weeks in my favorite country on Earth. I do not expect to see you during the very brief time I will be in Napflio but I will certainly keep my eyes open!

Thanks for this review you better eat three or more eggs a day ,don't let them spoil. Prices are far better than in the states ,plus quality is better in Greece, I was there in 79 loved the people and it was very inexpensive then as is now ,a gyro I've seen on videos are still under five dollars ,this blows my mind ,in the states inflation has raised so that the crime rate is up as well. Love your video ,thanks ,Greece is epic .🙏 I would love to ask how much hourly wage is paid to an average job ,say a store clerk or coffee barista.

This is so interesting! Im half greek half german but live in Germany. However we usually visit Greece around 2-3 times a year. We always try to find a local farmers market where we can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. But of course also go to the local supermarkets. The prices are similar to Germany but some are even more expensive, however fruits and vegetables are usually on the cheaper side in Greece but the quality is much better than here. Weirdly I cannot drink coffee here in Germany as it’s giving me anxiety but once I am in Greece I have absolutely no problem drinking it. Thank you for sharing your life in Greece with us. ☺️

Just don't expect _everything_ to be cheap. The video was about local food. Imported food can be significantly more expensive, especially if it doesn't have much of a tradition in Greece and can spoil fast in the Greek climate, such as chocolate. Note I am talking about major categories of goods, not variations or even brands. Greek prices push you towards a more sustainable and more healthy lifestyle, living primarily on food bought directly from farmers. But if you resist that and insist on eating what you are used to, it can get quite expensive.

We have one greek olive oil here ( except for Eridanous that Lidl brings occasionally) and a bottle of 750 ml costs 10, 65 euro. A 24 pack of super market eggs are 5, 40 euro. Feta is hard to find other than pre packed blocks, they are usually just 150- 200 grams a package, they cost like 2, 30 euro or a bit up .

Love these videos! I came across it researching potentially living in the southern Peloponesse region or Saronic islands. I'm curious about Panagiotis, your grocer. Thirty years ago, when I was a undergrad student majoring in Classical Studies, I took my first trip abroad to Greece. I was taking a bus from Athens to Epidaurus, but for whatever reason, I didn't get off at the Epidaurus, and I got off at the last stop, which was Nafplio. I'm pretty sure it was Panagiotis who helped me, a lost tourist. I was panicked at missing my stop, and I asked Panagiotis (?) when the next bus to Epidaurus was. There were no buses that day, and he helped me find a room for the night. This was before everything was available on the internet. Since then, I've visited Greece five times, and love this country. It was such a flashback seeing this good samaritan again. Again, this was thirty years ago, and he looks virtually the same. If you're reading this Panagiotis, thank you again!

The choice and quality was pretty good (had to go off the beaten track sometimes to find the best places). Whereas in the UK it can be just supermarket stuff that isn't great quality. @@Archestrel That sounds about right for that in Greece, too. For some reason, if you buy the whole chicken and it is 2kg then it is 9e but if you cut the same chicken up to breasts ,thighs etc then that same chicken goes up to 25e, with the bulk of the overcharge going to the breasts.

As I spend more time in Greece now than in Australia, due to my Greek partner and her family, I have a better idea of the cost of living in Greece. When I convert some basic grocery items, such as cheese, beef, poultry, lamb, etc into Australian currency, I tend to find them expensive for the average Greek wage earner. Greece is definitely a low-wage country compared to Australia and other EU countries. What one earns in a month here, one can earn in one week elsewhere. As for fruit and vegetables, there is more choice, better quality and price competition for the average Greek consumer, especially in bigger population centres, considering the ubiquitous traditional street farmer markets and the various supermarket outlets such as the German giant LIDL with its big discounts, MyMarket, Sklavenitis and AEB. I think that the traditional bakaliko(grocery store) would only be a viable business in small population areas. I also notice the absence of receipt issuing in Greece, from restaurants to medical professionals, definitely leads to lower Government revenue which in turn forces it to jack up tariffs and charges in other areas to make up for lost revenue. Tax evasion tends to run deep in Greek society. And I would imagine that any government here would have to consider electoral damage if it went hard on tax evasion. Tourist establishments and the maritime industry with its offshore registration system are some of the hardest nuts to crack! And if it wasn't for the Greek culture of building and passing on real estate with the next generation in mind, it would be hard to own a house unless one rented. Imagine a mortgage on top of other cost-of-living pressures! But despite all this, Greeks somehow find ways, naturally with financial support from grandparents and parents, to embrace passionately what looks like a more laid back lifestyle with its beach life, cafeterias, tavernas etc compared to outsiders who come from busier, faster lifestyles!

The prices seem reasonably good 👍 but for an average Greek family the weekly shopping 🛒 is quite an issue. In Piraeus a weekly supermarket shopping costs more than what we pay in Leeds UK, and that's without taking in consideration the average Greek versus UK income. But then there's the local open market where if you wait close to the business end you get great deals.

Prices...the eggs came out to a little over $3US per dozen which is more than here in the United States and I live in Michigan, suburban Detroit...Motown! I thought the cheese and coffee were good prices. For future reference, you know what you're pointing out in the store but we, the viewers, do not. I had to Google a couple of things like tsipouro. What is that? A bottle of water? Ah, no! Spirits, something like raki I find out. Same with the pasta. Looked like pasta but I wasn't 100% sure so I Googled some of the names and sure enough, it's pasta. And the round cylinder of cheese behind the counter, feta? You didn't say but the price was good. Absolutely beautiful in the Peloponnese. I've subscribed and will enjoy continuing watching.

yeap you are right those things are pasta we usually eat them as soup or side dish like rice.Tsipouro is raki with anise , Raki is tsipouro without anise and usually boiled more times,Ouzo is tsipouro made from chemical ethanol in Tsipouro they use grapes. Also depending where youre from we use a diffirent name for yellow cheeses, for a greek if you say "cheese" you mean feta

The local products are of above average quality and most definitely worth the somewhat higher cost. I hit up the,"λαϊκή"just like you for the fruits and veggies. The rest....Lidl😎 or a Σκλαβενίτης. In Canada, I'm a Costco addict because of my large family. But even the kids know the GR superb quality. They eat everything in GR😅

Hi there. New sub here. I'm coming to Athens in September for Uni at NKUA so your videos are giving me a heads up on what to expect (really helpful). I'm looking into the rent prices and from what I've gathered it's from 300-600 Euro going up. I'm looking into the areas: Ampelokipoi, Goudi or Zografou mainly then Pagrati, Panormou, Holargos, Ilisia. I've heard it's also ok to rent a place neat the tram line I think but I don't have much info on that. My issue is that when I look up apartments online manily on Spitogatos I'm seeing rent starting at 650 Euro. How does that work? Please give your opinion on rent especially on the above areas

Good prices overall ....U bought 30 eggs for 7Euro ,..here in Melbourne Australia, u will pay roughly 8.00 to $10.00 for a dozen...I'd say thats good value......Olive oil seems a little expensive considering they produce their own....But i think what Greeks have to get used to , is that there are other types of Cooking & salad oil besides Greek olive Oil......But overall very good prices on all items shown.....But now , what must happen is that the minimum Greek monthly wage rises from the pitiful 700 Euro a month to something more respectable like 900 Euro a month ..

I take 1100 euros a month and the prices are still too high for me. Most of it goes to bills and mandatory obligations each month. I have to pay 150 euros for electric bill, 80 euros for phone and internet at home, 40 euros for my Mobile phone bill, and 200 euros on other bills not to mention 300 euros for the accomodation i live because I don't work in a place that is near my home. And the tickets and taxi fares for going to work everyday because I don't drive. So around 500 euros for my expenses for going to my work place, together with the accomodation. What's left is 200 to 300 euros a month for 2 people for food because my mother cannot work and my brother is still a student at the University. Not to mention the medical expenses for the pharmacy each month and other smaller basic needs. That leaves me working only for the basic functions. And a friend of mine in Germany takes 5x times the same salary for the same work with accomodations provided.

The barber was he Pakistani ? He looks familiar from Nea Ionia by my apartment . You are 100% correct about good and bad in Greece. The big difference is that produce from Greece is much more strict than the US. Far less pesticides and no chemicals . Eggs are not treated with chemicals and you don’t have to refrigerate the eggs . Feta for domestic Greek feta is a very good price when you consider in the US it’s about $9.00 per lb for Dodoni imported from Greece . How are the olive oil prices now because of the drought ? We will see prices going up I can see .
