I would be nice to see a part 2 of this, where you install and explain the software side of things, like what apps you use, driver install and settings, Windows settings, setting up your surround sound, HDMI audio, setting up the wireless stuff with controllers, anitvirus, removing bloatware, etc. There are lots of build videos out there, but nobody really ever does videos on the OS/software side of things.

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the shop All the PCs were fixed, there were no flops; The thermal paste applied to the chips with care, The components stayed cool, even on just air; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sensible and budget friendly PCs danced in their heads; And Greg with his vacuum, a meticulous chap, Not about to let any dustbunnies take a long winter's nap, When from a motherboard speaker there came an audible beep, Greg walked over and took a peep. He opened the side panel quick as a flash, Trying to determine the cause of the crash. The RGB fans gave the room a beautiful glow, He immediately knew the problem was not lack of airflow. When what to his wondering eyes did appear, A DIMM was not fully seated, that much was clear. He pushed the module back into place, careful and quick, Wondering if something so simple would do the trick. But still, no post screen came, He wondered if a faulty processor could be to blame. "Hmm... an i3, an i5, an i7, and i9... It's just for testing purposes, any one will do fine. I'll place the good CPU carefully in the socket! And I'll ground myself first to make sure I don't shock it!" With the new processor in, he gave it a try, Still no post, but he did not cry. Back to the drawing board, he was at a bit of loss. But then he remembered to clear the CMOS. No jumper cap, he pulled a bit of a MacGyver He touched the two pins with his trusty screwdriver. He pressed the power button, and this time around, Right into the BIOS with no unpleasant sounds! He took a quick look, just to make sure, All the components detected, and he heard the case fans whir. A fully functioning PC now sitting on his table, he ran Cinebench just to make sure it ran stable. With a working PC, his viewer's Christmas would be merry! Greg shares his wisdom to make PC repair less scary. He uploaded the full video and never once cursed, but reminded us all to try the simple things first. A job well done, he loaded the PC in his car, He'd return it tomorrow, the viewer didn't live far. But the night was not yet over, he had somewhere to be, Off to Microcenter, full of glee! He walked in the store, prize wheel in hand, set up his table, the display was grand. The lucky viewer walked up, and gave the wheel a spin. Eight hundred dollars, that's a big win! He reflected on his PC and asked Greg a question. A new motherboard, CPU, and RAM, what a sensible suggestion! They worked together and upgraded the outdated PC. Some good performance gains with a nice upgrade path soon came to be. Greg thanked his viewers, and the store's employees, and walked back to his car, enjoying the night's breeze. But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight- “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a be quiet!"

I’ve been watching your channel for years because your content is both educational and enjoyable! I don’t deal with multiple computers at all, I watch your content for the great entertainment! About a year ago I built my first PC and despite being a more “passive” viewer there was enough knowledge and confidence to allow me to do so! Parts selection was actually something I didn’t struggle with. As you’ve made dozens of videos explaining budget balancing I didn’t make a misstep by choosing components that would be a hindrance to the others. For other people, it may be trivial to build a well-rounded system, but for me that isn’t the case. Just enough to not have a system blow up. For that, I thank you!

Yeah well that’s what a used $20 bluray player is good for. Why take up all that pc space and airflow for something a dedicated player can handle. Not to mention the pita of troubleshooting playback software issues. I loathe windows and bluray software.

I have switched from using PC cases with 5.25 optical bays to ones without them and just using portable optical drives that hook into the PC's USB slot. I find portable USB optical drives to be more practical.

This will take a full sized ATX board, ATX power supply and 300mm+ video card. The best purpose for this case is to repurpose an aging gaming PC. It's the smallest case with these attributes I could find for my entertainment centre. You can still get it with a knock out and tray for an optical drive (GD 09). It also has room for 2 80mm fans for exhaust at the back behind the CPU. Maybe I missed it but I don't know why he didn't throw those in.

No the GD09 is not as deep and cannot house large GPU’s. I have two GD09 built with AM5 both with 6700xt’s because they can’t fit big 330mm GPU’s. I’m considering buying one of these GD11 so I can install a 6800xt in place of the 6700xt.

I've been running a standard ATX build in my living room for a while, but really was wanting something more fitting for a living room in terms of looks. Thanks for showing off this case. I bought one immediately following watching this. I have since received it and swapped my build over (10850k/3080) and it's been great. It fits perfectly on the shelf of my TV stand. I did have to swap my cooler since my Dark Rock Pro 4 was too tall, but no big deal. To those who aren't really into AIOs and prefer air cooling like myself, the Noctua NH-D12L is an absolutely perfect fit in this case and is keeping my 10850k even cooler than the DRP4 did.

I recently built a new HTPC. Had all the parts leftover from upgrades and repairs of other PC's but no case. I live in Australia so finding a suitable case that would fit in my entertainment unit took months of searching. The usual process for this country as the range of cases is always limited. Silverstone to the rescue. Works great and is used extensivily every day.

Heya Greg, I just upgraded my computer in my older Silverstone Grandia GD 08. I'm still using my Blu Ray drive in mine.😊. You should be able to fit two Noctua 80 mm fans on the back of the case next to the power supply.

I enjoy seeing a build that's not so typical, and not something that's super high end. And I wouldn't install an optical drive either as I use my main system to encode physical media since it's going to be better for that regardless. I can see that some people might want to use it to watch physical media rather than streaming it from a Plex/Emby/Jellyfin server, and there are plenty of HTPC style cases that can accommodate one.

I built my current gaming rig last year. When all was said and done, I realized that I could rebuild the original rig the new one replaced. I call it my HTPC, but it's not anywhere as close to as powerful as the one Greg built. R5 2600X, GTX 1660Ti, 500GB SATA SSD, 16GB 3200 memory, B450 motherboard, 500W PSU, hooked up to a 4K 60Hz TV. The only gaming I've done on it since the rebuild was about 20 minutes of a PS2 emulator, but it does a lot of video streaming. Way more than enough power for that, and it does it a lot better than the apps that came with my TV.

I worked at a Gateway Store way back in the day and we had a very early HTPC the Destination. It had a 36 inch CRT and for 1999 it was absolutely amazing.

I swear, every time I do something I look at Greg's channel and see he did the same thing! I used the Cougar QBX case and an AM4 ITX system. I used a 5700X with a 240mm AIO, 32gb ram and a 3060 12gb. I built it for my daughter and her husband so they can play their games on the living room tv and watch all the media that I obtained in a completely legal way. They mostly play racing games, 2 player games and do some emulation for older console games.

I like the addition of a optical drive. I grew up in the 80s. If you don't have physical copys of games of music you don't own anything at all. If my power goes out I can hook my HTPC up and watch old movies off generator power.

I run 2 HTPC's one in my bedroom one in my living room. Got rid of cable in 2008 so the pc is my go to for everything. My bedroom rig is in a older silverstone htpc case a bit smaller than that one. As long as you pair your computer with a good tv with low latency like 1 to 5ms you will have a decent experience. I prefer a OLED now for sure.

I got some tips from building a high end gaming PC in this case. #1.Remove the top case brace as it is not really needed. 2# go for the Arctic freezer 240 AIO as it has a much thicker radiator to absorb those CPU temps if using something like a i7 or higher, but don't use the included Arctic fans as they are not the best and are loud. 3# once brace is removed u can shuffle the Rad over to the left a little which allows for a full size 120mm exhaust fan on the right side, this is very important as it's your main exhaust for case heat. #4 Pick an ATX motherboard that does not have the USB 3 header at the bottom of the board most modern boards have them on the side anyhow, it's a little tight but u can fit two full size 120mm fans on the left side as intakes even over the front header ports. #5 With being a living room HTPC Gaming PC go with 5x BeQuiet Silent wings 4 120mm PWM 1600rpm fans so it's nice and quiet along with 2x Pure wings 2 80mm rear exhaust fans. #6 get an ATX 3 Bequiet or similar PSU with a pcie 5 power cable so u can easily install something like a RTX 4080. #7 go for a motherboard with plenty of NVME ports as these drives are so cheap now, and u don't want to take up space or hear mechanical hard drives spinning. And also u dont really want to fit or take up space with the 3.5" bays. It's been a lot of trail and error but my build is 14700K/RTX 4080 with 6 nvme Drives for the ultimate 4K Home gaming & PLEX server in one. :)

I recently built an HTPC to play my 2160p video files. I can't decide if I want to keep it as it is or to switch operating systems. That part I'm not as certain about. Oh, you probably know this Greg, but you can get the temps on the Zen 4 cpus under control by undervolting. I dropped the voltage on mine and it's running far more like my Zen 1 did, mid 40's during idle and mid 60's to low 70's under load. Before undervolting it ran in the mid 60's at idle and high 80's to mid 90's under full load. Both these temps were tested and recorded during Cinebench R23 10 min runs. Of course this is on my gaming pc. My HTPC is a Zen 3 chip. That one is cool no matter what.

Here's an audio tip - if you've connected the HTPC to a Dolby Atmos soundbar or receiver setup through HDMI, install the Dolby Access app and enable the home theatre setting. This will properly pass through uncompressed / unconverted Atmos audio.

Had a similar HTPC a few years ago and you are right, older TVs didn't have the resolution to do productivity apps without eye fatigue. Refresh rate wasn't so important to me. Headaches from trying to do spreadsheets, emails, etc not so nice. Mine had an LCD display where you can display temps, speeds, personalized messages and more with software interface. Paired it with a Logitech wireless controller and K400 keyboard. Now that I have a 4K TV I miss the stealthiness.

I use a GD09 and it works well for most surfing and video consumption without temp issues. When gaming it is handy to blow a fan into the entertainment center for better air flow.

I would have gone with a B650 mAtX motherboard. You can find good ones for this type of build for around 120 bucks. The B650 would allow for a better upgrade path, if the 7600 is found to not be right for the build. They tend to have better vrm and cooling for said vrm. If going with a board without vrm heatsinks, the Artic Liquid Freezer II AIO coolers may be a better option. They include a small fan in the cpu block that blows air over the vrm. They run for around the same amount of money as the Deepcools. The 240 that I'm running in my rig was around 83 bucks, when I got it from Amazon about a month ago. Steve from Gamer's Nexus used the 360 version to cool the new Threadrippers, in his reviews of those CPUs. My daughter uses the same model Deepcool that Greg used in the video to cool her 12700K so they're no slouch for the money spent, either. In this build, I just think the extra vrm cooling gives the choice to the Artic.

Totally needs a single 120mm exhaust fan next to the power supply. These Silverstone cases get hot and needs at least two intakes and a single exhaust. No passive venting gameplan with a 3080 installed in there.

I built my HTPC from a 4th gen intel based dell computer that I had lying around, in a second hand silverstone case and a couple of extra drives I had laying around haha. I did have to find a half height GPU for it though, so I went with an AMD RX 6400 and it works well for my needs.

On mine, I Used some HP 6000 series SFF builds.... in my Livingroom I have a HP 6005 and have a HP 6000 on standby.... these builds work great for the HTPC format.... you just need to make sure they are fast enough..... I maxed out the 6005 with a quad core processor and as much memory as the system would support.... always use at least a 1TB hard drive and put in a second for additional storage! love the idea of having a HTPC....

Really clean and understated build. Have myself grown more or less tired of RGB, mostly due to the potential can of worms it can come with due to all of the different softwares etc. Really clean build overall and especially liked your reasoning around not going for the highest end components, since it's not always really necessary to begin with. 1:24 looks at massive collection of DVD's and blu rays. Wellll you don't speak for everyone. But nothing beats physical media, and that has been proven time and time again, with games, movies and music being removed from digtal store fronts and from streaming servies....... But when it comes down a USB disk drive for physical media if needed.

He could have easily installed a ATX motherboard. His concerns about fans and atx is unwarranted. Silverstone knows how to design cases and it of course fits. I have two GD09 and have two 120mm intakes next to the top vrm side of the board. It’s designed to work fine, no need to have a gap just for the heck of it.

I've considered cases like these for an HTPC in the past, but I've never been a huge fan of the lack of cable routing and such. Yeah, it doesn't really matter since you won't see it anyway, but *I* will know it is there. 😅 I do think that's a bit better now that 2.5/3.5" drives aren't as common, so you can drop SATA data and power cables. Right now, I'm just using a Lian li Lancool 216 on its side. I was using a Fractal Design Meshify 2 Compact before, but I was going back to air cooling and I needed something with a bit more space and flow. What I would love to see? More of a return to cube cases. I really, really like water cooling for quiet builds, but you generally have to go a bit overboard related to your components to keep everything at a whisper-quiet level. For example, my main desktop is an i7-12700k + 4090, and I use two thick 360mm radiators. I set the fans to a constant speed that's so low that I had to actually turn it up so I could slightly hear it (for the peace of mind to know that it's actually working 😅). I could make a really nifty build like this, but considering a desk-style case, I'd want front-mounted intake and top-mounted radiators. The closest thing there would probably be Cooler Master's HAF XB EVO.

Just a comment on physical media - I work for a non-profit thrift store and, and we sell, on average, over 1000 disc based movies alone. Throw in an average of 75 to 100 vhs tapes, and that adds up to a lot of people that do still use physical media. Those are monthly numbers, by the way, and we are neither a Goodwill nor are we on the scale of a Goodwill. Kind of like vinyl, all things seem to come back around - everything from 8-tracks to dvd's. People do want to actually own their property, instead of relying on the goodwill of some tech company (see very recently - Sony... again)

So I've built in the predecessor of this case the GD09 and it's nice to see significantly more airflow in the new design. That being said I do not like these "HTPC cases". They are kind of bulky and you feel like hiding them away like the receiver which means they become hotboxes even if the case itself is designed well. I like something like the Fractal Ridge. It looks a bit smarter and is compact so I'm more likely to have it out in the open. I feel like it looks more like furniture and less like office equipment which just makes it easier to justify not hiding it in the cabinet and having it out in the open. However, I will argue to the death that unless you have a reason you need a lot of local compute for low latency like VR the best HTPC is a framework mainboard in some custom enclosure. You can stream gameplay from a gaming desktop. It has a low TDP. It's tiny. And you can match it to any aesthetic you want.

I seem to remember there was a plan to modify the current entertainment center with some fans/vents. I suppose that may happen when it's finally time to move into the new house, which I see from social media is coming up soonish, like just before or immediately after.

I used this case to squeeze some extra like out of my z390 Taichi ultimate and 9700k. I even was able to fit my 9700s 360mm radiator and only mounted to two fans. Had to dremel and bend the brace bar on the top of the case slightly to clear the radiator. Then I upgraded the radiator fans to a pair of arctic p12 maxs. This limited my gpu length to about 271mm and had about 1-2 milliliters of clearance. This was able to fit with two slim fans on each side of the case. I paired it with an acer predator arc a770 after updating the mb bios to enable rebar. I use it as a living room pc/ streaming pc. I have also been using it for light gaming because intel has been pretty good about driver updates.

19:01 Done differently: I would probably use a 4070 instead of a 3080 in such a airflow constrained setup. You basically get the same performance with 150w less heat and 2GB extra VRAM.

I have an HTPC like this one that I built in 2022, that I also use for streaming. I just use the Windows magnifier when I need to read text on the screen from across the room (like when choosing a media source) and a wireless mouse on my end table is the controlling device. I have been a cordcutter for 10 yrs and I prefer to stream with a PC in my living room.

That’s a mid tower sure. Silverstone used to make the nice slim ones. Myth TV was all the rage back in the day I believe they even had HTPC Windows edition . Remotes, TV Tuners etc. Any chance to see PLEX ? Adding additional storage to play back internet archives? Keep up the good work Greg!

Silverstone cases have the most professional non rgb gaming cases, sadly they're a tad pricey but def worth the look

Normally I'm just a silent watcher but I just love HTPC 'S I started back the mid 2000's back then with a Cooler Master Cavalier 2 with a Beast of a Core Duo cpu haha! Man time's changed.. Recently I build a system for my sister in the SilverStone GD04 a oldie but goldie system with a i7 6700k / 1070Ti evga / msi b250m bazooka / 32gb / 970 evo plus ssd as windows drive / 2Tb 870 Evo ssd / Seasonic Focus 650w platinum / with a blue Ray drive off course haha! Plus a lot of Noctua Redux fan's love them! Keep up the good work Greg!

I'm about to build kind of a hybrid NAS/Plex/Gaming home server with mostly used parts. I had a cooler, 850W PSU, and RTX 3080 laying around and my brother is donating his old 9900K and Z390 Maximus Hero motherboard. I ended up picking up an Enthoo 2 Pro Server edition case, which is a gigantic case, but it can hold the ten 12TB HDDs I need to put in it.

G'day Greg, Nice build, I like these HTPC Cases as they remind me of the olden days when PCs were Beige & I was young 😂 Ps if you want to add rear exhaust for the 2 mounts above the I/O be quiet! make 80/92mm fans that are just as quiet as their 120/140mm ones, I use them for my Retro case builds.

I still have my Silverstone Crown02 since i can just lay my "old systems" just in there because it is so tall. Had to cut 2x 120mm holes in the bottom and lift it up a bit for airflow but atm it handles a 6900xt @ 230 Watts and a 3700x just fine.

I only have 1 PC and a decent 32" LG monitor. My bequiet! HTPC is also my CAD Workstation. One thing I added to my old system when my on board Realtek sound flaked out was a Soundblaster Z. It sounds way better on my Logitech G5.1 speakers
