Isn't this the problem with the Shonda Rhimes shows? Supposedly smart, self-possessed women falling in love a-holes who think the world revolves around them? Shonda pushed the narrative that Meredith/Olivia had epic love stories (a justification for their extra-marital affairs, really) with Derek/Fitz, d-bag brats who had faithful wives (who were smarter and more capable than their husbands) but sidelined them out of pride and their own selfish needs. The true heroines of Grey's and Scandal were Addison and Mellie. Didn't you just want to hit weakling Meredith ("Pick me, choose me, love me" -- ugh! "I don't care if you're not worthy and that we will hurt your wife!" is what it all boils down to!) and equally messed up Olivia ("I don't want normal, and easy, and simple. I want painful, difficult, devastating, life-changing, extraordinary love." -- ugh! "I don't care if you're not worthy and that we will hurt your wife!" is what it all boils down to as well!) over the heads to get some sense into them??? I would have actually applauded Shonda if she let the husbands realize how good they had it with their wives, apologized to them, and became better men. But no! That's why I tuned out of Grey's midway season 3, and tuned out of Scandal sometime season 4 when Fitz still couldn't get his sh*t together and support his wife throughout her grieving their dead child. BTW, the men (Patrick Dempsey and Tony Goldwyn) who played these d-bags had more interesting chemistry with the actresses who played their wives (Kate Walsh and Bellamy Young), IMHO. Or maybe, the relationships and backstories of those marriages were just written better.

We can't forget the time when Derek threatened to end their relationship if Meredith pursued Neuro, which was the field that she was very interested in and wanted to learn more about. Not only could he not handle Meredith's career being on par or better than his, but he couldn't even handle the possibility that they were working within the same field of medicine. He pushed her out of the field and specialty she loved because his ego couldn't handle the fact that she might be better than him. I think that this also helps him believe that his specialty is more important than hers. He believes that Neuro is far more important and significant than General. We can see how much Meredith misses Neuro when her younger half sister Lexie is taken under Derek's wing. Meredith gives Lexie pointers about how to be in the operating room with Derek and such. Overall, Derek couldn't handle how the women in his life(Meredith, Addison, and Amelia) had amazing careers that were better than his, so he belittled them as much as he could as a way to keep his ego intact. P.s.: George O'Malley is just as toxic as Derek. He is just a cut and paste of Ross from Friends. Alex and Owen should also be the next Grey's Anatomy characters to get analyzed. Along with Mark, because there should at least be one semi-positive one.

Wait I haven’t watched the show in a while but didn’t he tell her not to pursue Neuro because he couldn’t trust her as a career partner since she sabotaged the trials? He told her they can’t work together anymore since he can’t trust her to not sabotage. But I do agree that he has an ego! And you can see it towards Amelia. He blamed her for all of it and then refused to even look at her, let alone talk to her. He then turned to Callie(who was an absolute angel) and proceeded to talk shit about his friends to her, especially Meredith. He let his friends talk shit about Callie. Then, he cheated on her. He did apologize later for these behaviors, but due to his actions, his relationships with his ex-wife and friends were never the same. Yes to all of this. I always believe the demise of his marriage to Addison was that she was a better and more talented surgeon than he was- the way everyone referred to her constantly as a star and that festered into him working all the time and acting resentful which culminated in her affair. And with Meredith, he pursued her, discarded her, hounded her, judged her, he was beyond awful and it fascinated me that as she became his equal he became more and more threatened(and then almost fell into a something with a younger, beautiful, doctor who was early in her career). Shondra was definitely depicting a certain type of man with Derek. There is one scene that bothered the hell out of me and made my dislike for Derek develop a bit more. When Mer broke up with him at the end of season 4 into season 5 due to her deep-seated depression, he started dating the nurse Rose. In one episode, he said something along the lines of Mer should be concerned that he was having a great time with his new girlfriend. Why on earth will you say something to someone who is dealing with a deep depression, someone you know tends to act or reacts dangerously when something bad happens to her? It was extremely manipulative, self-centred, and completely insensitive. What annoys me is how Mer was so enamoured by him in the early stages, always trying so hard to please. Like girl, this man cheated on you with his ex-wife, didn’t tell you he was married, choose his wife over you, completely humiliated and embarrassed you, gets angry and calls you a slut for sleeping around when you are not even together, then makes a self-centred rant about how he is suffering for his choices, cheats on his wife again with you, then tells you you have to make the decision to choose between him or the veterinarian, a situation you created? This is the more interesting when you compare him to Amelia. She is his little sister and the one who reassembles him the most physically and intellectually. Not to mention that she was with him when their father was killed. They share that trauma, but they handle it shockingly different. Derek develops a black-and-white kind of world view while Amelia develops addiction, which makes her inherently damaged for Derek, specially when she relapses. While for others the fact that Amelia is capable of choosing to get sober over and over again is a sign of her strength, for Derek is a weakness. Amelia doesn't view herself as morally superior, she knows she is flawed and her mistakes allow her to grow. But the punchline is that she is, in fact, morally superior to Derek and the proof of that is that when the doctor who killed her brother needs a surgeon, she delegates the quest and later when he dies anyway she doesn't make it about divine justice. She emphatizes with Betty and keeps helping her even when she runs away. She understands that people are allowed to make mistakes and that makes us human. She is an amazing surgeon, equally good or even better than Derek and sure, she is arrogant too, but she doesn't believe she is above everyone. Derek was always going around saying that Amelia destroys everything she touches, but that's only true in his worldview. To everyone else, she is just a person. That's why Addison keeps chasing her when she relapses: "That thing in there? That used to be a person, okay? And she was sweet and funny and we were sisters okay? We were closer than sisters! (...) I just want her back". Addison acknowledges that Amelia on drugs is not the same Amelia she loves and knows. Derek never knew the difference.

He had older sisters yet he was the one raising and taking care of Amelia at a very young age while his mother worked all the time? I have a feeling that whole family was fractured following the father's death and never recovered. Meredith Grey is not the only one with deep stated issues that need therapy in this show. If the show didn't glorify him so much and didn't frame him with all those sweeping romantic moments, we would have a much more realistic and interesting view of him. The whole "dating your subordinate" thing was in the wake of those early 2000's post-feminist projects (Bridget Jones, Sex and the City etc). Grey's Anatomy in general started out as a Sex and the City-like medical show, and like SATC, it ultimately proved to be less profound than it promised.

I'm not saying it should be forbidden for people who do not hold the same amount of power at work to date each other. Loved this video, and love that Derek’s character and lack of real development over the seasons is contrasted with more dynamic characters, like Mark Sloan. Derek Shepard is a good reminder that good-looking, charming, successful men can get away with a lot of bad behavior because the facade is considered so ideal.
@kbrennan38363 жыл бұрын
What's weird is that Mark had just as much in the way of looks, charm, and success, so if those were the only factors, you'd expect them to end up as similar characters. But, what Mark didn't have was Derek's unshakable certainty that he was The Good Guy and therefore deserved to get whatever girl he wanted and somehow have everything work out for him. Mark wanted the same things as Derek, but he didn't feel entitled too them, so he learned how to work for them.

@@kbrennan3836 I also think the trauma of seeing his dad murdered played a significant role in his development. Thank you for this!!! I hated his character later - making his career more important over Meredith's, kissing that other woman!, going back on his promise to Meredith he would let her take the time in their family for HER career...and yes, not telling Mer he was married in the beginning. McDreamy was never my favorite LOL. I loved Mark Sloan better actually...his character actually matured and grew throughout. Mark always had self awareness of who he was; loved his relationship with Callie too. I really loved him and Lexie, and will never forgive Shonda Rhimes for that plane crash haha! Yang said it best to Mer when she left in Season 10: "Don't let what he wants eclipse what you need. He's very dreamy, but he is not the sun" Yang for the win, as always!!!

Interesting parallel when the woman who kisses Derek says he's amazing. It's very similar to Meredith calling him amazing in season 1 after their first surgery together. I can understand why the show made Derek this way. Early 2000's shows and movies had a problem distinguishing between romance and overstepping boundaries. There was also a lot of shows/movies that showed "flirting" as tearing someone down for expecting basic human kindness. Alex showing Izzy's modeling photos in the locker room comes to mind.

Honestly when this show came out, I remember that as soon as Mark came out, I instantly began questioning Mer and Derek. Some moments Derek was a good guy, and some of his choices made sense. Like him not mentioning he was married after finding out his wife cheated on him; I get him not mentioning it at first if he was in the *middle* of divorce. Some people count being separated/in the middle of it of not being married. Should he had mentioned it once he knew Mer was it? Of course! If it was just when they started dating; yeah, I get why he didn't. I wouldn't either until I knew it was serious Could I tell some moments were him just reacting without thinking? Yeah, and we've all been there. But he's got too many moments with that that happens constantly. Especially when Mer gives up and drowns. Like I understand her almost dying was something, but I just remember him saying how much it hurt him and how he couldn't do it while she was still trying to deal. I understand that's a lot, and it was fair to him to be honest, but the way he went about it made me *livid*.

What I would be interested to know is, what were Rhines intentions with characterizing McDreamy as she did? There are plenty of power- imbalanced couples like this in a hospital setting, probably in any workplace setting. Was she just portraying real life as it typically occurs, then and now? Were we supposed to recognize McDreamy's flaws? Isn't that the whole point of Christina & Meredith being each other's "person", because due to the brainwashing of patriarchal systems, a man can rarely ever be a woman's "person" in a het romantic relationship (though a woman can be a man's "person" in that same relationship).

I'd think/hope so. Especially with how Yang leaves the series. Watching her read that letter from her mentor; telling her to slag all haters, and buy a dog if she needs a friend; is one of my favorite show moments. Especially with how Doctor Shows like forcing hardass surgeons, of both genders, into 'character development' arcs. By which I mean becoming soft, sentimental Hallmark movie characters. I don't want Julie Fucking Andrews doing my surgery. I Want Christina Goddamn Yang going hard with the cold, ruthless precision of a Swiss watch.

I think it’s both? Portraying real life as how deeply flawed people can be and how maybe at a certain age you’re just unable to even recognize those flaws and work at it. And I think they criticize his flaws. I liked that everytime he was shitty, it was addressed. Either by someone else or Meredith and she never took it lying down either. I think it also can show that dating the older guy isn’t as great as some people fantasize. There’s a lack of being taken seriously with such an age and professional gap dynamic! But also idk if it was all supposed to be that deep or a lesson LOL. Maybe it was just writing characters and as it developed it became this. Rhines writes beautiful flawed characters throughout all her shows imo so it could just be that. Trying to see how deeply flawed people can get together and how those flaws would work in a relationship?

Considering autism is a neurological condition that is better handled with therapy and pretty much never with medication, she clearly hasn't researched it enough to even begin trying to "cure" it. And we were supposed to think "Oh, she's smart and perfect. However will he avoid falling for such a exceptional young woman?" blech XP Also want to say that a cure is impossible so she's wasting her time. It's freaking hardwired into the brain from birth. You can't change being born autistic any more than you can avoid being born gay. And before anyone comes at me for that, a lot of people on the autistic spectrum tend to identify somewhere in the LGBT+ community so everyone should be trying to learn to get along.

Right now I have to finally face my boyfriend's flaws and they are similar, the need to be seen as an "alpha" to the point that he's trying to shame me into becoming a trophy girlfriend, a rigid believe system, toxic perfectionism, he doesn't give a shit about my career and thinks I should stay home anyway...maybe I need to RUN.

End that relationship. If you continue it , it will harm you.

PLEASE, PLEASE RUN!!! I was in a similar situation as you , and I thought things will get better in time, prayed that God will make him see his mistakes and change, dreamed of him being the good man I wanted him to be. Friends and family constantly told me to leave him, but I ignored all of them. But it never happened, he never changed, and I foolishly stuck by his side. I managed to end the relationship, but now my career is now set back 10 years, and I’m now so emotionally depressed and drained that I’m now afraid of committing to another relationship. If you need some time to think things through, please do, but please do not make the same mistakes I did.

@@ziggystatdust6008 Thank you for your message, it's very hard right now because I spent 8 years with him, I also was convinced he will mature and stop hurting me. I thought we grow old, have children, it's so hard to lose all of that and his good sides. I'm between hoping for a miracle and mourning, I cry everyday and even his own mother told me I need to leave if he can't respect me.

Thank you! I always hated that dude. Every time there was a mass death season finale I was rooting for him to die. But they took steamy instead. And he was the real hot one. Who actually grew and learned through the show.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I never liked Derek especially after seeing him treat Teddy after the hospital shooting. He was one of the reasons that guy shot up the hospital, but put Christina quitting on Teddy and he treat his own sister like crap but was a better brother to Lexi. The one time he could have had her back when that man's patient outed her as an addict he chose to leave her hanging because he wanted the surgery. I like the point out that Meredith was always the problem. I will give it to him that he helped Meredith open up to getting to know Lexi and he did support Meredith with her parent issues but he's " I'm better then everyone" attitude irked me to core to the point that every time someone told him off i was screaming "YES!"

I would love to see your take on Harvey Specter from Suits. This analysis was on point btw.

I started watching the show because my friend pitched it to me on the idea that the women are competent and confident about it and the men are beautiful but whiny and clingy.

When I was a teenager, I used to want Meredith and Derek’s love. Now I realize how problematic it was.

Totally agree. Both Meredith and Addison deserved better

In the most recent episode when Mer was getting ready for the Parkinson’s surgery, she said something wishing that Derek could be there, I muttered “and second-guessing you the whole time”. This is how much I dislike him. Plus, he was mean to his sisters, especially Amelia 🙄 and he could have divorced Addie, but was too much of an a$$ to do so.

I had a love-hate view on the character, he has some good moments but a lot of red flags. Towards the end of his time on the show I was ready for him to leave, but his death episode from his perspective was admittedly quite sad. But I think it was a better ending than if he just up and left them.

I've never liked Derek. I found him toxic, controlling, narcissist and arrogant. Pursuing an intern even after Meredith tried to keep her distance due to the relationship being inappropriate and he finds ways to get her in his serve just to see her. Stalker much, abuse of power. Then Derek's wife comes in the picture to which exposes his secret about being married and what does Derek do, not only does he go back to his wife but he tries to defend his actions about going back to her while also longing for Meredith while emotionally punishing Addison in the process. He was toxic jealous when she tries to get over him and called her a whore. Hate, hate, hate. He belittles her, the whole DC thing still upsets me, and a bunch of other things that I hate about him.

My close friend married a surgeon. He was arrogant cold detached. At first she thought she hit the jackpot that he loved & married her. Very soon after he displayed the characteristics I mentioned above. I wonder If those things in a strange way were what made him so driven to be a great surgeon. To do what he does he has to have extreme confidence that makes him arrogant they also tell drs that to stay objective they much not get emotionally invested in their patients. I just wonder maybe the lines do get blurred between the professional & personal. This may be why Derek is the way he is.

Yes! Excited to watch this because I never saw the appeal in Derek. I tried to see the appeal several times but he was just not doing anything for me.

You should make a video about the doctors/hospital shows, the characteristics and stereotypes to analyse.
