Shifting Roots

Күн бұрын

The first two weeks of March are the perfect time to start ranunculus and anemones, especially if you have a last frost date similar to mine in my zone 3 climate--May 21st. I'll show you how to soak your corms, talk about pre-sprouting, and show you what they look like a month after starting.

I have said this on like every single video I've watched where someone has been presprouting their corms (so you can imagine I'm a little upset) but I purchased about 400 ranunulus & anenomes this year (a lot of the fancy & expensive ones at that) & Have thrown over 300 out because I also invested in a hoophouse this year, & I didn't get it finished (some of the parts didn't quite work out) in time. They were way too overgrown in the trays so I separated & replanted them further apart (lost about 1/3 doing that) then had to do it again (lost about 1/2 of the ones remaining) & then recently I Found a website that was offering some rinuculous corns for sale and they said they would be shipped soon so I said forget & tossed all but the ones I presprouted last (that still dont look too big & dont seem to be suffering from being under grow lights & in seed starting mix for too long... Honestly I needed to toss them out anyways because even even if I could keep them alive long enough To get them hard enough and in the ground in the hoop house, They probably would have been so shocked that they wouldn't have bloomed or would have only sent up a couple blooms and ICould plant something else there and get a lot more production out of it, But I just want to have a big beautiful patch of ranunculus so bad it hurts! Lol. I want what Tonya @freshcutky has soooo bad! Also, I know you had a little bit of an issue with your re ridiculous last year and so I just wanted to say (although maybe too late) As soon as you see that the remarkalous or anonymity corns look plump you should get them out of the water. I realized last year soaking them for 4 hours especially the smaller ones, Was just too much time. This year monitored them a lot closer and most of them were completely. I had about 50% of them wrought last year and absolutely feel like that Was because I soaked them for too longThis year I only lost my Lee lost maybe 3% of my corns due to them rotting in the trays...

Oh my, I would be upset too! It's so tricky, because you do sit there with these plants for at least a month, desperately waiting on the weather to warm up so you can just kick them outside already. We have a room in the new house that isn't super well insulated that I'm going to move them to in hopes that that will give them the cold they need so my experiments have a hope of blooming. And yes about the over soaking! This year I still did overnight, but I didn't forget about them and I had so much better results. I think all of my ranunculus made it, and I only had 8-10 anemones not make it--much better than last year!! I'm also hoping to the put the early ones in the greenhouse once Mike closes off the ends. I want a huge patch of ranunculus too--we will figure it out!!

Thanks for this video! I'm in Winnipeg and I've decided to plant along with you this year in trying to grow cutting flowers from corms bulbs and seeds. I just bought ranunculus today and will be starting them today.

If I start them first week in March, what time (approximately) should I plant them out and also what time will they likely bloom?

Thank you so much for your video! but I still have some questions. After soaking the corms, fill the tray with half the potting soil, and then the soaked corms, and then more potting soil. Do we need to water them at this stage? and do we need to water them after a few days? How much water is not too much? Thank you!

Can you show pics of anemones that have been pre-sprouted? My anemone corms look like yours but I can only find pics of anemones that look like acorn shaped.

I ordered some ranunculus from vesys but they won’t be shipping until after frost so I won’t get them until may. So, we will see. Didn’t know about putting them in a cool dark place to sprout. I wonder if a fridge will work as the store room will be warm by the time they get here
