How I Turned My Home into an Avocado Forest

It took me 3 years to turn my home into an avocado bonsai forest. Throughout that time, I’ve attempted to grow and experiment with over 100 avocados that now each tell a story that I want to share with you, so you can grow avocados at home successfully the first time, and learn from all of my trials and tribulations.
So…3 years, 100 avocados, and a home full of avocado bonsai trees…follow along this journey if you’re interested in growing your own avocado seeds at home - and not just for a regular at-home avocado forest…..for a BONSAI avocado forest!

Here are some unique facts that you’ll learn throughout this video:
1. Avocados are botanically classified as a berry.
2. Avocados will have a more successful growth rate if you peel the outer layer of skin off of the seeds prior to propagating them. To do so, just soak your avocado seed in water for 1 hour prior to peeling off the skin, which will help loosen the skin and make it easier to peel all in one go.
3. It will take about 3 weeks for your avocado seed to crack open and your root to sprout out of the little bum of the seed. Patience is key here.
4. Changing your avocado water every 3 days can help prevent bacteria growth in the water and on the avocado roots.
5. Experts say that cutting the stem off of your avocado once it grows 2-3 leaves helps the plant to branch out and promote stronger growth, rather than having the plant grow too tall. I tried it (and with 2 avocado plants to compare)….so find out whether or not this is a true fact in the video!
6. Young avocado shoots are very bendable. As the plant starts to age, the twists and turns will start to solidify and you won’t be able to undo your avocado bonsai tree later on.
7. Historically, marker trees have been used by Indigenous communities for navigation. They would choose a tree and shape it, just how we did with our avocado tree, and that shape would point towards significant landmarks. In a park in Toronto, there are three marker trees along the trail. And they are really cool.
8. It can take up to 13 years to grow your own avocados from seed.
9. You may need 2 avocados growing together in order for the plants to actually yield fruit. And it may or may not be possible to grow your own avocados true to seed. It’s possible warped avocados will grow. But we won’t know until we try.
10. Adding a dash of caesar or mayo to your guacamole can give it the creamy kick you never knew the best appetizer needed.
11. Freezing avocados right before they go bad can help preserve them for later use. Just eat them right away after removing them from the freezer, or else they will turn brown at a faster rate than fresh ones.
12. If you put electrodes on your plants, it can detect electrical signals that can provide information about the activity and behaviour of your plants. I tried it using a device that amplifies the electrical signals and coverts them into sound and music.

The paper towel /ziploc bag method is way more effective/faster than the toothpick method. I planted mine straight to dirt from the ziploc bag, skipped the water .

I grew a 6 ft tall tree and it was magnificent... But never any fruit. The tree though was incredibly healthy and I shined and cleaned the leaves with a smear of real mayonnaise and those leaves sparkled. Just a smear on a clean cotton cloth!! Spritz with bottles water!!

Wow, that's an amazing amount of avocado sprouts! Looks beautiful! Btw, you don't _have_ to remove the skin - I've got two newly sprouted ones with the skin still on (I didn't know better at the time!), the skin just cracked and dissolved or flaked, pretty much. YMMV, I guess? And yeah, avocados don't grow true to seed, but they won't be warped, they'll just most likely taste disgusting. But if you're extremely lucky and grow one that tastes good: congratulations, you've now added another edible avocado varietal to the world (there are like 5 I think?), and you'll likely be a multi-millionaire if you play your cards right.

I didn't know there were so little edible avocado variables. But how come you could be millionaire from finding a new one? Is that the case for all the produce that only have an handful of edible variable as well? Does it mean some people actively search for new variables by planting tons of plants because it's like hitting the jackpot if it works out? Maybe it's also a job and some people do that as a living at nurseries but I never thought about it before. Anyway sorry for all the questions 😅

@@rebeccaaliberti5053 haha, no problem. It's not like I'm an expert, just repeating things I've read/heard from more knowledgeable ppl. But yes, there are experimental nurseries searching for new palatable varieties of avocado, as it's a desirable high-priced... fruit? Whatever it is, it sells for comparatively high prices to other things, and there being few varieties (and every plant of each of those being a clone) makes them very susceptible to diseases. New varieties might also be able to be grown in new locations or have other desirable qualities. And the avocado industry is massive and highly profitable - so profitable that drug cartels have tried to take it over in certain regions. And sales of cuttings of established edible avocado varieties are strictly controlled. So finding a new palatable variety would be a huge opportunity for selling it at a high price, and there would be a lot of interested parties.

I've been growing a jackfruit (actually I have 3 that are surviving at year 2 now), but skinny like your avocado one here. Do you think I should cut it in half like you did with the avocado?

Avocados will totally grow fine by themselves, and bear fruit (ie. self pollinate, to some extent). I think what you're referring to is when people recommend pairing a type A avocado with a type B avocado. Essentially, avocados have both male and female flowers on the same plant, but they're largely open at different times... so by planting a type A nearby to a type B avocado, the flowers will be able to more effectively cross pollinate each other as when the type A has female flowers open, the type B will have male flowers open (and vice-versa). In theory, this will give you *more* avocados (assuming the plant can support it). Also, you'll need to make sure the timings are similar for the types of A & B avocados you choose (ie. both blooming at similar times, or have some overlap in their flowering/fruiting season). Edit: I've honestly found that they germinate just as easily in a damp soil mix (like moist coco peat) as they do in a glass of water, and it'll save you having to transplant it later. It may take *marginally* longer to germinate in the coco mix, but you won't suffer any stunting/shock due to transplanting from water to a growing media... ultimately it's about the same time, but the coco is easier IMHO.

about a month and a half ago i got one of those chonked up green avocados from the health foods store and i hated the **flesh** (why was it sweet????) but i put the seed in a damp paper towel for like a month. it grew a big root and now its outside and the stems growing super fast (ty southern weather) and is just starting to grow leaves. i never thought abt bosai-ing an avocado plant before and its such a good idea!! im gonna try it now once i get more growth. great video :D
