The following content is related to the July 2013 issue of Guitar World. For the full range of interviews, features, tabs and more, pick up the new issue on newsstands now, or in our online store.
Bugera was the first and may still be the only budget-minded manufacturer whose all-tube, hand-built amplifiers successfully challenge and sometimes eclipse the performance of today's elite super amps. Hearing and feeling these amps for the first time is enlightening, especially for guitarists like myself, who have-unnecessarily, it now seems-spent thousands of dollars in our search for a tube-driven amp that provides a simple but deep control set.
Bugera's latest creation and flagship is the indomitable TriRec Infinium, an uncomplicated, all-tube, 100-watt boutique monster that delivers everything from warm cleans and vintage crunch to ultra-modern, skull-crushing gain, all at a street price under $1,000. Two years and more than $2 million were devoted to developing the TriRec's short and pure signal paths and the Infinium technology, which monitors tube performance, vastly increases tube life and allows players to use any combination of power tubes to achieve their personal tonal nirvana.

"Valves" ARE "tubes" in the world of audio and amplifiers. In American we tend to use the word "tubes", and Europeans tend to prefer "valves". Point: SAME thing.

How about the Bugera quality control ?? they had some serious issues in the past... Also does anyone know what kind of tubes Trirec bears?? can they be easily replaced for lets say some JJs??

I hear they come stock with some kind of Bugera factory tubes, but plenty of folks swap them out with better tubes like JJ. I have not owned a Bugera personally, but am becoming more interested in them due to the Infinium Circuit, which is supposed to extend your tube life 20 times, self bias and allow you to mix tube types too. Dunno if that is an accurate or provable claim, but sounds great if it is true.

Is the sharp sound typical for rectifier amps? I'm new to this rectifier thing and it sounds to me there is like a constant treble boost on this thing. I'm an 80's metal fan (Maiden, Van Halen, old school thrash, etc). Would a rectifier amp handle that 80's kind of tone or am I better of with the 333XL?
@heut4384

The TriRec is geared more towards today's metal sound. I am into the same type of metal as you, so I personally find the TriRec a bit too thin and grainy. It lacks that chunky / heavier / deeper palm muting bottom you are probably looking for when doing Van Halen and Maiden and the likes. Being disappointed with it I reinvested my money into the Randall RD100 (trying to stay within the price range). I find that the RD100 generally handles the 70s and 80s style metal quite decently but not the greatest - particularly if you're trying to achieve that Panama / Poundcake / Unchained sound of VH or the nice scooped out sound of Pantera or that full tight bottom attack of Maiden. I think its' because the RD is trying to be an 80s amp and at the same time a modern sounding amp to handle those 7 and 8 strings guitars that requires more midsy sound (which I don't really care much for in the RD). The TriRec does offer tons of features you'd only find in the high end amps running about $2,500 (separate EQs for each channels, independent controls for the FX Loops, Reverb, Power variable section, Boost, etc.). So feature wise, you get more for your buck. Sound wise, it'll do the job decently and some people can live with it, but you'll find yourself back in the market for another amp in a year for sure. To be able to achieve that VH, Dream Theater, Maiden, Pantera (and the likes), I've found the EVH 5150 III to be an honorable match. Should check it out. EVH also offers the 50W head, which is half the size and priced under $1,000. If you like what I like, you'll won't be too happy with the TriRec, but you may be happy with the EVH. Good luck.

Don't forget, this guy never changed the pickups from straight bridge only on the LP and seemed to have the treble up high. You could probably get some fatter tones rolling off some treble and going to another pickup or combo of the two and dialing in your volume and tone knobs. Stock LP bridge pickups can often sound thin. Most young players don't know to roll back the treble a hair on the tone to get a fatter, more soulful woman tone either. Like they don't know the tone control exists or ever moves off ten, ha. You might check out the Carvin V3 head. I have heard a lot of good things about them. On sale right now with free shipping for only $799 direct from Carvin, USA made in San Diego, CA. You can run the stock EL-34s or reset the bias switch for 6L6/5881, they are three channel with a ton of features too, including MIDI, different color channel backlighting to tell you which channel you are on visually, cool looking. 100, 50 or 25 watts switch, three level speaker impedance switch (4/8/16 ohms), etc. Lots of videos on KZbin. Most people just overindulge on the treble maxed up or out, both on the guitar and/or amp. I know we all just want to play and wail away, but sometimes you got to move a tone control or two on the instrument or amp to experience everything they have to offer, and play around and find out all the options. I hear the Carvin controls are very interactive and wide ranging.

Remember, this guy kept the switch down on Bridge/Treble pup of this Les Paul the whole time, so you really did not hear what range of tones it might produce in different pup positions for the clean channel. Sounded fairly good like it was for a head, and I have an ear for Fender amps, all four of my tubers are Fender. I don't know why a lot of these reviewers think the only pup on the guitar is the bridge. Mix it up! Most young players go over board on treble over-doing it, even while using distortion or overdrive (fuzzy and fizzy and buzzy), like there is no reverse or roll back on the treble controls or guitar tone controls. You often need to roll back the treble or tone to get more of the open vowel woman tone as made famous by Eric Clapton back in the day. Lots of options once one starts fiddling with their tone controls!

I own this amp. Hasn't failed me, played a couple shows. Dropped it once, and the tubes fell out. Put them right back in and it works fine a few months later. I use this through a 90s 5150 4x12. I ran it in stereo with my carvin legacy 3 power amp through a line6 flextone 2 4x12 and a vox tonelab se for slight chorus and delay. Dunlop 535q wah. Boom, killer sound that filled my neighborhood on the 4th of July. Particularly noisy though so make sure you have a means of taking care of that. Sounds very good when it is quiet and amazing when it is loud. Can't say that about a lot of amps. I don't use the variac control. The boost is helpful mostly for live situations and not much else. The clean is decent, nothing like the carvin though.

But please, please Guitar World get rid of those soundguys once and for all they´re destroying your reputation !

My guitar teacher told me many years ago "your sound comes from the mids." I used to wonder why the heck when I kicked on the overdrive channel it totally disappeared. Because I did the scoop-the-mids schtick. Adding the mids make an amplifier huge.

I know it sounds backwards to metalheads today, but the "classic metal" sound does involve boosted mids. Metallica famously did the mid scoop on their early albums, but according to Kirk by the time of the Black Album they had "rediscovered the midrange". Slayer and Megadeth also have a prominent mid boost in their sounds; Kerry King dimes the mids on his JCM800 and adds an EQ with the mids boosted as well. Dimebag scooped the mids on his amps but added them back in with an EQ.

It sounds like they're a micing either a bit too close to the grille, or too close to the center of the speaker. Although, what a lot of people don't realize (not saying you dont, just in general), is that the 'fizz' of some amps is what helps it cut through a mix. By it self, it's meh, but in a mix it can rule.

Bumped mids is more of old school metal not modern. Even a lot of old school metal used scooped mids. I have this amp and I really really like it. For me the "vintage" setting has the best tone along with the clean and drive of ch.1. The reverb is a let down. It's not lush at all. It's got a very short decay and makes the amp sound like you're in a small club with no crowd yet. I don't know what they modeled it after at all, but I've never heard this reverb on any amp with spring or digital reverb. Bugera tells me that there may be something wrong with mind after I described the reverb. So, I've got another Trirec on order to see if it's any different. The other thing that is old on this amp is the "modern" voicing on ch. 2 and 3. When you engage it the volume increase is ridiculously loud. You can hear it on this demo as well. Nothing wrong with a bit of volume increase but the level at which it goes up is pretty extreme and unbalanced compared to "vintage" and "classic" settings. Plus, there is a high mid bump that's a bit grating. I'm not sure what Bugera thinks is "modern" about their modern setting. It's not a modern metal tone at all, and it's not a modern rock tone either. There very well may be something wrong with some of my amps circuits as this demo sounds better on some settings than my Trirec. When I get the new one I'll see if it's any different. Other than that this is a fantastic amp. It has a lot of tone variation. And the most important aspect for me is the "feel" of this amp. It's effortless. You can play lightly and smoothly and never feel like you're struggling to get the notes out as with some amps. The sensitivity is excellent even with much lower gain settings, so it's not just the gain that gives the better feel. The "boost" feature is excellent and works very well. It's pretty much like adding a signal boost pedal to your in line hook up. A VERY important feature of this amp was not covered in this video in detail as it should have been. There is a reason why this amp is called "TRI REC". There are 3 types of rectifier in this amp and you can choose between them, and they do make a noticeable difference in sound and feel. There is a solid state rectifier, a tube rectifier, and a combo SS + tube rectifier. Internally there are 2 rectifier tubes, which I've not seen in most other amps. SS rectifier has the tightest feel and sound. With the SS rectifier the amps controls the speakers nicely. You can do palm mutes and chugs that are very tight and accurate. Great mode for some metal players and for players who like distinct definition in their sound. The all tube rectifier mode is the classic sound and feel with that tube "sag" that gives the sound a nice warm and natural tone. It's looser in it's control of the speaker and is great for bluesy playing or hard rock. Awesome tube tone. The 3rd mode is a combination of both SS and tube, and as you would think this mode splits the speaker damping. There is a nice damping to the speakers while also giving a bit of sag to let notes bloom. All 3 modes are very usable and great to play with. I've been using the mixed mode mostly. I'm hoping the replacement amp works as well and possibly corrects some things that I'm not thrilled with on my current Trirec. If it's the same then no big deal. I've found plenty of settings on this amp that I really really like, and I've got pedals and effects for different reverbs. The next amp I want to check out is the Carvin V3 and V3 micro. The V3 seems to be a lot like the Trirec except for the different rectifiers. It also has 3 channels with various voicings within each channel. If the Trirec ends not being what I'm expecting over time, then the V3 will be next. Till then, you guys really need to try out the Trirec. It's pretty darn amazing for the price!!!

Good info and personal review of your amp, thanks. This amp seems real cool and feature laden (I esp. like the ideas of the Infinium circuit, tri-rectifier mode, and the vari-power) , and I am interested in the Carvin V3 also. Right now the V3 are on sale for $799 with free shipping and any choice of tolex covering I think, only a 100 bucks more than the Tri Rec, check out the Specials on the Carvin site. Taking my time for now, got a lot of other irons in the fire, and my four Fender tubers (a CVR, two older Super Champ XD combos, and a X2 head) suffice for the small to medium size MOR pop gigs I do at the moment. But one day, either a Tri Rec or V3, once I figure out the best way to go, and get back to more gigs. A MBA program is eating most of my time at the moment. I should be studying now, ha.

Personally, I find that there isn't a noticable sound difference between decent affordable guitars and more expensive instruments. You should try and compare a squire classic vibe and an am std stratocaster. It's not that there is a totally obvious straight in your face difference in tone. I think the difference lies mostly in a lot of small details, like the feel of the neck, the finish... In other words, nothing that will be noticable in a video demonstration

I had a Mesa Dual Rec. It sounded like a hippo farting in the mud. So I got rid of it and got a Peavey. Do that.

That shape doesn't say much because most amps, (just about all good ones) have multiple distortion circuits and those are mapped to the frequency of the input. Scooping the mids on an amp means less distortion in the mid range, the actual output of the amp hardly ever changes when running it through the drive channel. All you are doing is defining how much of the sound waves are cut off making the sharp sound that we know as distortion. The V shape is a misconception of whats going on.

That's just the stereotypical thing. Some people manage to make that sound good (such as Ola Englund, who has unreal mixing skills), but in reality scooped mids generally just muddy up your tone, especially live. That "V" eq might sound brutal in a bedroom, but on stage it makes the guitar a lot harder to hear. Mids help you cut through the mix and make your guitar sound "louder"- not in actual db's of course but in apparent volume. Give it a shot sometime; you might like it. Have a good one!

Guitar World Demos all seem to have a very fizzy sound. I don't know what they do during editing or what the sound engineer does with regards to either DI or how they mic up the amp but they somehow make everything sound more or less the same. Bugera have a much better sounding demo of this amp on their channel.

I could show you tons of dull sounding mesa clips... Its about the microphone and especially the player. Check out Ola Englunds (fearedse) Review for this amp to have a review that suits more to the natural envirement of the amp.
