The nutcracker is just a weight on wheels switch. I get that question a lot, so I'm going to do a Tech video on it very soon. The 6 lights refers to the thrust reversers being fully deployed.

@badbilly10836 жыл бұрын
It almost feels like I’m watching aerial artistry. There are multiple streams of incoming data that pilots must interpret to produce multiple outputs. Those outputs then become the inputs to one of the worlds most complex machines. And unlike every other art form, the price of a mistake can be horrific. But when executed correctly it’s beautiful.

@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
Smoothest landing? Definitely me...Jon will say otherwise, but he doesn't know what he's talking about. HAHA! For me, getting to the runway in bad weather isn't the stressful part. The hard part is when the runway is slippery and getting it slowed down. But the worst weather...probably blowing snow with low visibility.

Awesome guys! But I have a question though, what are the nutcrackers? Are they the thrust reversers? And I assume that boards are the speed brakes... Thanks! Bryan from Vancouver

@firefighter81916 жыл бұрын
Love the videos guys. I noticed when the autothrottles are armed, there is a slight difference in the movement of the throttles and it seems like there is more thrust on one side as compared to the other. Is there a particular reason for this or is it just how the autothrottle system works?
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
That's pretty normal for the G-IV. They are attempting to keep the engines in sync, so they just move around a bit.
@normk57616 жыл бұрын
Nice...thanks! Is there a maximum allowable throttle deflection (throttle knob position difference) when when setting power for the same values on both engines? (I hope that made sense!)
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
I've never seen any limitation for that. The auto throttles to move them independently, but when setting them manually, they are usually pretty close when then engine settings are the same.
@keithwinikoff30996 жыл бұрын
Can you tell me if it is normal on G IV's for the autopilot roll axis to oscillate as if the servo gain was set too high? It looks as if the control input is dramatically shaking at a rapid rate? Doesn't look smooth at all?
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
Every G-IV I've ever flown operates in this way. The turbulence amplifies this effect. The cameras don't show the turbulence well, so it's hard to tell that we are in it other than us bouncing around a bit and the yoke moving as you've noticed.
@johngareffa72076 жыл бұрын
Maybe coming from TEB? Question are your Mauis polarized? Are you able to wear polarized shades on deck?
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
Those are polarized. The only real affect we notice from the glasses is a slight "blotchiness" through the heated windshields. But to have superior eye protection is well worth it. I know with the old style LCD screens the polarized glasses would turn them black, but with the newer LCD design, that only happens when you turn your head sideways.

Great video as always. Question, what is meant when you get to the "air start" on the checklist right after the "warnings inhibited" part of the check list. Of course the warnings inhibited is self-explanatory. Is the "air start" in case of an engine stall?
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
That's just another term for re-light ignition. If we are in heavy turbulence or precipitation, we will turn it on.

@TheFlagsofDawn6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sean and John enjoying the videos… Can I ask you what changes to procedures and systems have been put in place on the Gulfstream 4 following the Bedford crash? Thank you
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
Gulfstream actually came out with a modification to the gustlock control to ensure the power levers cannot advance with the gustlock engaged. Also, we now are required to verify elevator movement early during the takeoff roll.
@TheFlagsofDawn6 жыл бұрын
Okay, thank you for that. At Bedford they had somehow got around a gust lock issue which allowed the throttles to advance, is that correct?
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
Correct. In Gulfstream's testing of other aircraft, many other planes were able to advance the throttle while the gustlock was engaged. This should not be able to happen. Thus the modification I mentioned previously.
@TheFlagsofDawn6 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Sean or John most appreciated

There seems to be tons of rubber on those Florida runways in the TD zone. How does that affect your braking in the heavy rain down there? I did some work at SFO and they were concerned about it there.
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
It can make it a bit slippery when wet. They do a good rubber cleaning every now and then. Typically we aren't on the brakes until we are pat that point anyhow.

When do you lower the gear and drop the flaps? Outside of the FAF? When do you switch to hand flying on the approach?
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
Yeah...usually gear and full flaps are right around FAF. Sometimes just before, sometimes just after. The hand flying is by mood. If we are in the mood to hand fly, we may take it many miles out. If not, we may wait until just a mile or two before the runway.

Shaun, the radio wanted you to maintain 180 and you asked for "flaps 10" then they asked you to maintain "170 on a 4 mile final" and you ask for 20 flaps. What are the flap speeds? 170 knots seems fast for 20 flaps but obviously not. I just love your video's.
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
The limits are 250 for flaps 10, 220 for flaps 20, and 180 for full. We usually fly 180 with flaps 10, and 160 with flaps 20, that's why the flaps were called for those speeds.

Great Video. I'm guessing that your bird isn't equipped with a CAT III system; even though the IMC conditions weren't horrible. Based on that is the decision height the main reason for an aborted landing if you can't visually see the runway lights?
@CorporatePilotLife6 жыл бұрын
You are correct, no CAT II for us. The aborted landing can be many things, decision height being one, and low visibility another big one. It just depends on the particular day.

We are the only crew for this plane. We do get vacation, but have to hire a pilot to fill the seat on a daily basis if one of us is out. We don't have a set schedule, and are on call almost 24/7. It is probably easier when you are expecting them to say certain things. You are just listening for the specific numbers or letter's of altitudes / runways ect. That is just a guess.
@judd_s56436 жыл бұрын
And to think the state of California doesn’t think these guys can use a phone while driving a car.
@wkdravenna6 жыл бұрын
Driving a car things can happen very quickly in seconds. Piloting a plane, you have time to do things. Also most traffic will Identify itself to you. So most planes that are large have the traffic system. If another plane is nearby it says "Traffic" then it could be followed by pull up or descending. Quite a bit different then a car. Also you know California doesn't Ban you from using a phone while driving. They ban you from holding a phone while driving you can use a hands free system. These guys also by note, don't use a phone while they are ascending or approaching. They are engaged in what they are doing at that time. Just like drivers should be.
@deltaflyer19976 жыл бұрын
They are expecting the ILS clearance so you just listen for that and the altitude to hold until established to read back. Unlike the person who says "things happen slowly in planes", they don't. You're moving at much greater speeds than a car, and if you aren't careful you can get behind the aircraft, especially on an IAP in IMC. Source -- I'm an instrument rated pilot.
