Great video Greg, very educational, I thought Gwen only gets to be about 15 feet, but wow, that mature tree at 25 feet is gigantic. Thanks for sharing, learned a lot from your video!

Hi Greg, I just planted my Gwen this last weekend, super excited to have it finally in the ground. Thanks for sharing!

I love driving through Pauma Valley and up the 78 and see avocado trees everywhere, and stopping at the fruit stands. I grew up in Orange County and that part of San Diego County reminds me of how wide open Orange County was in the 60’s😢

Got my Gwen this year from Epicenter Nursery and has put it in a raised bed. I plan to keep it pruned at 8-12 ft.

Gwen is indeed a green Hass avocado. Nice video.

Hi Greg, I always enjoy your videos, a lot of great info. and history of avocados. I have two Gwen trees that are about two years old. I received my Gwen fruit from you and they are beautiful. I ate my first Gwen today and it was delicious. It was similar to a Hass but kinda tasted like a Reed to me and the shell is thick like a Reed too. I enjoyed every bite...it was so good! Reed and Hass are some of my favorites...I am looking forward to tasting my homegrown Gwen some day in future. Thanks for the videos and the chance to taste some wonderful fruit.

Can you profile a Kona sharwil? I got one and its got the telltale red specks, but would be nice to learn more about it.

Yes, I really am overdue on making a profile of Sharwil. I'll try to get that one done.

Does anyone know if these are available in the UK, I really would like a Gwen, I understand it’s highly unlikely to bare fruit here but I am planning to grow one for my best friend Gwen.

A more general question about avocado trees in general. Does anyone know if they can grow near black walnut trees? I have many growing in my back yard, which is why I am considering growing in a pot instead of in the ground. Thank you.

A little late in the game here but I’m hoping you are still monitoring your old posts. Would you recommend pinching off flower buds on young avocado trees like you would on a mango tree to promote tree growth?
@gregalderdotcom3 ай бұрын
It doesn't hurt to remove flowers but I haven't seen clear evidence that it helps either. It might be a waste of time. It certainly doesn't immediately send the tree into a vegetative mode. The stress and precocity that caused the tree to flower so young in the first place cannot be stopped or changed once it is manifested, unfortunately. Also, you need to be careful when pinching off flower buds on an avocado because often there is a vegetative bud hidden in the center, and you don't want to remove that.

Very good point on possibility pinching off the hidden buds. Greg, thank you so much for your help and keeping us informed. Love watching your clips and reading your posts. I’m a big fan! Keep up the good work.

If kept pruned, would Gwen do okay in a large container? I am in NCal, and would need to be able to move it for protection? I would probably put it in a 35-50 gallon pot.

I've seen photos of Gwen trees grown in trash cans for many years by researchers at UC Riverside so I know it's possible but I've never done it myself.

How do you make your tree signs?

so there is an on year and off year? Is it like fuerte where it's all or nothing in a given year?
@gregalderdotcom2 жыл бұрын
Hi James, Gwen can alternate but in my observations it doesn't alternate a lot. Some Gwen trees I know alternate very little.

Hello Greg, I am an Italian boy who is desperately searching for avocado mexicola seeds, which apparently in Europe are impossible to find. A friend of mine will be in California for the month of June. Do you know where she could find any?
@gregalderdotcom2 жыл бұрын
Mexicola usually aren't ready until August in California. I don't know if you'd get good germination with immature seeds harvested in June.

I've two Gwen's, in 2020, I stumped a 5 gallon Feurte and cleft grafted a Gwen, and 4 months later grafted Gwen to a 6 month old seedling. The first grew about 4 feet last year, then at winter's end lost all its leaves, and now just starting to leaf out, but not that vigerously, my Gwen on the seedling has not lost all its leaves, and has been throwing out new growth for some time... should I give up on the Fuerte/Gwen?
@gregalderdotcom2 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank, Did the Gwen on Fuerte bloom this spring? I wouldn't give up yet. I'd wait to see if the tree's new leaves get near full size. If they don't, then there's something seriously wrong and you might call it quits.
@frankyancy13472 жыл бұрын
@@gregalderdotcom yup it did bloom....
@gregalderdotcom2 жыл бұрын
That's a bit comforting because some young trees like to shed all their leaves during bloom even though they are not sick and can look perfect later in the summer (or sometimes it takes a full year for full recovery). This is not uncommon of the varieties that have Gwen heritage, such as Lamb and GEM and, of course Gwen itself.

@@frankyancy1347 I think 2 of my 3 GEMS are doing the same. Keeping fingers crossed.

Hi Greg. Don't know how to get in touch with you other than posting here. Do you know anyone who sells the Gwen as a tree? 5 gal or 15 gal?
@CG-qx3yc2 жыл бұрын
Where can I buy a Gwen these days lm in Ca Orange county and all locals say they sold out.
@ocneal2 жыл бұрын
(1) Call Laguna Hills Nursery in Santa Ana, (2) www.louiesnursery.com/, (3) Four Winds - www.fourwindsgrowers.com/products/gwen-avocado-tree?variant=21362766938171 , you can try here and leave a request for scion wood to graft: ocfruit.com/Contacts.php. I'm sure there are more. Just make certain it is from a very reliable source - you don't want a tree that is mislabeled, etc.
@CG-qx3yc2 жыл бұрын
Gonna have to wait till next year for tbe 5 or 15 gallons cause all 3 nurseries sold out. Only Louise had 24 gallons, but not interested in paying t much. Thanks!
