24:10 The dials tuned just right sounds like a Douglas Adams joke. In the narrator of the Hitchhiker's Guide voice: "But in fact the dials were tuned in just right for the small insignificant people of earth at exactly Thursday at a half past noon sometime in 1994 of October. But as all things are in the universe it quickly righted itself' and things continued as usual.

Grey's notebook scribbling idea reminds me of something my Cultural Anthropology prof. said in college about his house. His house used to be a church, been sold off, been converted for a few other purposes, then sold as a house. About a week after he moved in, two old priests showed up at his house and told him they had to (and these were their exact words) "make the house profane" so a person could live in it without it being a problem for the church.

When i got my new notebook to use as a planner, i wanted to write my school's bell schedule on the first page, but i really messed it up. Now i can finally write in it pretty carelessly.
@peterlarson2337 жыл бұрын
Your notebook thing reminds me of my neighbor, whenever he got a new helmet for riding his dirtbike, the first thing he would do is smack it on the ground to scuff it up. That way he was never scared to get a scrape on it. The helmet's purpose is to protect your head, not to look pretty, you don't want to worry about scratching it.

I've heard artists say when they buy a new sketchbook, they'll just scribble all over the first page and then they're less scared to do sub-par sketches or reference drawings or whatever on page two. Or, on a more comical note- when we install kitchens for people and they get new floors in, we always joke that we're gonna drop a hammer so they won't be the ones to ruin the floor

"Do actors know t hat they're in a terrible movie?" A lot of the time it's very difficult to know how good or bad a movie is going to be until the whole thing is finished. Much of the film production works a bit like a bureaucracy, where you're in one tiny, isolated island of production and you do your part but have no idea what other aspects are also being worked on. Not just when actors happen not to share many (or any!) scenes, but sometimes what would be an 'okay' film can be turned into a very bad film when there is bad cinematography, editing, sound production, etc, and the actors generally don't have any input here so they may have done the best job they could but if other people involved in the making of the film didn't, the whole thing may end up not being very good. And sometimes it's useful to remember that actors are people who have a job. Most people have some days or projects, where they work because it gets them paid, but they're not really feeling it and may end up not giving it their best. I'm sure that many actors also do this every now and then: they star in films that don't particularly inspire them, they put on an okay performance, but ultimately it's just a thing to get over with so they can get paid and move on to a more interesting project that they can be fully invested in.

Squarespace adds always annoy me, as someone who builds websites. Building websites is not magic, it's often pretty basic code. Especially static websites, or blogs, are very easy. And there are so many free services that can do what Squarespace does for you for free. And SEO (Search Engine Optimization) isn't something special, it's literally just telling google (and if you want bing) that your site exists, what pages it has, and what the languages of those pages are. And even those are not required, but it could make it faster. The rest Google does for you. The days of keyword spamming, and other ways to game the system are gone. What you need to do now to get high in the search rankings, is have good content.

I had a "sacredizing" experience when I bought a Samsung Galaxy S8 last year. I had lost my previous phone (Samsung Note 4) about 3 weeks earlier, and because I loved it so much, I knew I would find it, so put off buying a new phone. Ever surprisingly, I never found it, and got the S8. For the first few weeks of ownership I treated it like my own child. I bought a belt-clip for it since I work construction, and am frequently bending down, therefore bearing stress on my front pockets. I refused to put a case on it because it was so sleek and beautiful, and I felt it was worth it, even though it was obviously extremely delicate. One day at work, I went out to my car to get something and sat in the driver's seat. I did the classic, and put my phone on my lap. Got out of my car, and onto the pavement goes my gorgeous phone, face down. My heart broke, and as I picked it up I saw the glaring crack streaked across it's lovely screen. Since then, I've probably dropped that phone over 500 times, and have literally experienced other people freaking out when I did so, only for me to roll my eyes and say "it's fine, I've already dropped it like 4 times today". I still love that phone, though. :3

I love listening to this at 2.6x, and I love it! I agree that I can miss some moments, but I'm that used to it so my brain tends to understand anyway. It started for me while watching Star Trek Voyager (Janeway talks so slowly). I would rather consume content faster, and get more, than cut down on what I listen to/watch. Video Speed Controller is quite useful, I managed before I found it with a little js bookmarklet but it is a bit more convenient. for anyone interested (3.5 is the default, 2.5 is the default if you type something that's not a number like 'asdf')- javascript:document.querySelector('video').playbackRate=Number.parseFloat(prompt('rate','3.5'))||2.5;

On the topic of american centric news : should every american know the *details* of the politics of each country? No, of course not. I think that´s not at all why people mock americans frequently. As a central European, I´m not much impacted by brazilian or south korean politics. But I sort of know when they have major political crises. Also, to me it seems perfectly normal to expect a 21st century educated adult to be able to place most countries of the world on a map, if not precisely then at least approximately, like : one should know exactly where Brazil and Argentina are, but it´s okay to only know that Uruguay and Paraguay are in between them somewhat. Similarly, I wouldnt expect everyone to place Kenya on a map... but, knowing it´s in Africa and maybe narrowing it down to "not the north" (cuz non-mediterraneans) and "not the south" (cuz South Africa is a thing) seems totally reasonable. Grey does have a point about the size of the US influencing this, but it´s not the entire reason. The US has had an isolationist policy for decades before becoming this dominant world power in the early 20th century.

I do wish U.S. news was a little more worldly. I remember when I started watching BBC news in the mornings and being like wow I didn't know this much stuff going on in the world. Then I'd turn on U.S. news and you would hear nothing about these things (sometimes very serious things) and it shows just how ethnocentric U.S. news is. And I do think U.S. news should be mostly about the U.S. simply because the U.S. is so vast but it would be nice it get a little more outside perspective. But things like the eclipse you got to give us a break on, like that is a fun thing to get excited about. And most news shows don't do a great job of explaining science anyway.

@CGPGrey, about the GDP... Why GDP? If you measure by population, the number becomes ~2/3 for Brazil, ~1/32 for Czech Republic. GDP makes sense as long as you care about "what happens to GDP in the world", but if Americans should care (I know they do), shouldn't they care much more about "what happens to *people* in the world"? (I know, you said the measure is not perfect, I just feel, shouldn't the right wording be "completely irrelevant"?)
