I'll likely never put color in my hair, but I've thought the chalk colors are a more loc friendly alternative. This is such an interesting experiment! This would be VERY educational for comparing the before & after of locs when common/popular hair products are used, and even for comparing various carrier oils and different shampoo brands. I hate that it’s a no-go for locs because it’s such a great alternative to permanent dyes on dark hair, but I need to find a decent hair chalk brand now. It was not good when I was a loose natural.

Thank you so much for this experiment. I really appreciate time you put into helping us be more educated when choosing a temporary color for our locs. I did try wax on a few of my locs months ago and it was just as your experiment showed. It took multiple washes especially if kept in beyond one day. The locs with the wax were also very stiff after the wax dried and forget about touching them. It did wash off my hands and clothes easily but I would advise against wax as well.

Like damn, my heart started racing when I saw the wax . I got blue wax from my sister and tried a little on the end of one loc and didn't like the feel and gave it back to her. Whew!

Nope, nope, nope, nope. This is why I didn't jump on the hair wax bandwagon. 🤢 I kept seeing some of my favorite locers here on youtube saying it washes out completely. My 14 years experience with locs tells me you often don't find out what may prove bad to your locs until some time has gone by. *Ask me how I know* . I'd love to see this again after each was allowed to sit for a few days.

I used a spray for highlights one year and it made the locs feel kind of crunchy. Currently I used a semi permanent (Manic Panic). My locs felt nice and soft afterwards! I almost got the hair wax but didn't because i was afraid of build up. I'll stay with the semi permanent. TFS.

So there are pros and cons in everything. If you use permanent dye you run the risk of damaging your locs if you use color hair wax you run the risk of accumulation of buildup in this case I’d rather deal with buildup vs dealing with damaging dyes that will weaken my locs over time. #pickyourBATTLES

Buildup will damage and weaken your locs as well. As long as you’re not bleaching the hair color “damage” can be managed

Do you think that some of the wax from the roots gets stuck lower on the loc when you wash it? Since we usually rinse our hair with the water traveling down the hair shaft, you know?

What is your opinion on hair color gel instead? Curlsmith makes a color gel that washes out easily, but I have only used it on my hair before locks. I’m not sure if it’s ok to use it on my hair now that it is locked.

Permanent hair color in within the hair strand not on top of it so it’s not a fair comparison... in my opinion. I do believe you can color your hair and still keep your locs healthy, but of course no chemicals is always better!

This was a test on thic locs. I don't believe the same will happen to microlocs because it isn't a deep to penetrate

I saw someone, I don't remember who, cut a LOC in half thatf used beeswax and it was *not* good so I've never used that but I've used my color wax 3 times in the last 2.5 years of being locd... I wash every week because of seborrheic dermatitis so I may have less build up than ppl who wash less but omg I'm stuck with 3 jars of damage... Looks like I have to find a loose natural or straight haired friend to give them to. 🤦🏾‍♀️

One takeaway for me from this video was that if I were to bleach my hair it may be better to do it before my Locs are fully mature because, it seems that fully mature locks are harder to rinse any kind of product out of than newer locs (the ends of your hair in the demonstration). Is my logic wrong? I have 3 month old instant locs and was considering bleaching my hair. Seems like it would be harder to rinse the bleach if I wait until my locs are more matted and mature? Is that correct?

The wax has poor penetration into the hair follicle and the spray looks better but all looks unhealthy. I dont believe that one wash works in locs or african american hair in general
