Bill Maher's political views aren't necessitated by his atheism; they have more to do with his shallow and simplistic understanding of history and society. He thinks that specific tenets of religions are the cause of major conflicts, terrorism, etc., rather than economic and social factors for which religion can provide a rationale. I'm an atheist, but I don't yell, "Oh no! Muslims!" in response to every problem in the Middle East. Maher just has a simplistic formula that comforts him.
