The first woman crying over the journal makes it very clear how she ended up in her MLM. She didn’t get sold on the money opportunity she definitely got sold on the community because she was obviously lacking that in her life to cause her to feel so valued and seen because she got a journal from the company. It’s very sad.

It was really disturbing to watch. I’m positive this was sent to…everyone. Decades ago I was responsible for sending out a letter for every constituent of a Congresswoman’s district, and they had a machine that had her signature plugged in and used an actual pen to sign, so it looked like she signed every letter. That was in 1998. Imagine how quickly that could be done with technology today. But if it elicits this kind of reaction, and inspires this kind of loyalty from people, I can see why these companies do it.

Come to think of it, I did ask for help after my husband died & I realized I needed to sell my house. A former supervisor and her husband helped me paint some of my walls to get the house ready to go on the market, she helped me move to my new, smaller house, she & another former supervisor came to my retirement party, etc.

Yes, it's so sad because people need legit encouragement and relationships but MLMs prey on it by doing the bare minimum by sending cheap-butt "acknowledgement" trinkets and generic messages that are supposed the best thing since sliced bread.

The first story: that card was, almost certainly, part of a mass mailing to independent contractors that her CEO probably didn't even look at. I've done dozens of mailings under the name of my department or organization's executive director. It's pretty standard that, most of the time, the person who "signs" it (in the case of this lady, the CEO) has absolutely nothing to do with mailing, card, or gift. I cannot believe someone would have such an over-the-top reaction. I can't tell if she's lonely or super brainwashed and feels like she just got a card from the Dear Leader. Either way, I hope she finds better support at some point.

When she started to cry about receiving an envelope, I was thinking there was a huge check in there. BTW-I work for a financial consumer protection agency and the classic scam technique is making the ins and outs of their "opportunity" so convoluted and complicated, that you feel stupid for asking for explanations. If you don't understand it, STAY AWAY FROM IT! Which is why I stay away from crypto and NFTs.

Crypto is really not that complicated. I’ve been investing in it for about a year now-winning some, losing some-and in the end it’s just like any other commodity, really. NFTs, though…lol. The best explanation I can come up with is they’re like digital trading cards, but every one is unique. I don’t get into them because I don’t think they’re that cool or useful an idea; why do I want a piece of digital art that loses its value if I display it? But in the other hand, NFTs don’t *have* to be that, either; if you’ve ever bought a special weapon or weapon skin, or outfit, or shoes or something for your forum avatar or video game character, those are all also NFTs. Lol I don’t know if that helps or makes it worse. If I wasn’t on my phone I’d try to go into more detail, but I hate typing on my phone and this is an older comment/thread anyway. But I do hope it helps and will answer any questions I cant.

The requirement to buy product is INSANE. How do they not see this??? B/c they love to use Starbucks as an example, my husband worked in Starbucks corp for years and every single employee from barista to executive gets a free pound of coffee a week. Free. And once ever never were they required to buy even one latte. You know why? B/c Starbucks has customers that are not their reps!!

I didn’t realize that some MLM’s require that reps buy stuff personally to retain their rank. I thought that they were simply buying to meet a quota for total sales. That would be bad enough. This is even worse.

When i was in Young Living, we always wanted people to sign up with our equivalent of the “home essentials kit” because it consists of products that people go through quicker. daily cleaners, laundry detergent, soap, etc. are used are more often than a random bundle of essential oils, and the reps know that

I'm wondering, do you think it could also have anything to do with the customer's trust? at least from my perspective, if someone was recommending me a bundle & I noticed it just happened to be the most expensive one offered, I would immediately see that as the sales rep deceiving me and just trying to get as much money as possible

The Home Essentials Kit was cheaper than the oils kit when I was a distributor, but they ended up paying more in the long run because they would run out of those products more quickly than the oils and needed to reorder. So at first, it seems like a cheaper and more practical option, but its really a manipulation tactic to get you to reorder again sooner.

It’s similar to what restaurants do on their menus and wine lists… they will have a wine priced at an outrageous top price, in order to make the ones immediately below it seem better value. These ones are the ones they can buy cheaply, so make the most profit.

Okay I'm only on the first clip so far, but I have two thoughts: 1. Getting something like that in the mail from the CEO of any company I've ever worked for would have caused me a mega eyeroll moment. It's so hollow, "here's a shitty little notebook," it's like a pat on the head. It reminds me of the time I got a letter from a company I used to work for because I had been working for them for five years. No raise, token, giftcard or anything like that, literally just a letter thanking me for working there for FIVE YEARS. And this is in a job with a super high turnover rate. My husband called it a "crisp pat on the back." 2. She says, "I'm not just a number!" Whew, I got news for you, girl...

The first young lady's reaction was so distressing to me. I was a paralegal. Our bosses didn't just pay us well and provide good benefits; they gave us gifts, cards, surprised us with paid days off, with baseball tickets, gave us *very* generous multi-holiday bonuses, and none of us cried about it. We said "thank you," and we appreciated it, but we also worked for it! To be so emotional over something which is routine for many people with the dreaded 9 to 5 job, speaks to some serious gaslighting about the nature of the working world and employer/employee relations. If you have good, marketable skills, you have a good chance of picking for whom you work and what employment culture works for you.

Recently, I got a nice beanie, a couple of pens, and - wait for it - a journal, but my reaction wasn’t sobbing on the Internet. My reaction was “oh HELL yeah” and then that was it. I wear the beanie, I use the pens, I write in the journal. The world moves on.

I know this isn't a LuLaRoe video but I must tell you, just yesterday, I went to a Goodwill Store near the NC /SC state line. When I walked in, I was shocked to see two FULL racks of Lularoe garments, brand new complete with tags still on each and every piece. It was so painfully obvious that someone had just thrown in the towel. I wonder how much that poor person must have lost before she gave up and donated her inventory to Goodwill. Wow......🤯🤯

Having worked at a thrift store, I can say that LLR is almost impossible to sell, and usually gets sent on to be recycled or (sigh) shipped overseas to pollute someone else's environment. Nobody wants it; it doesn't even make good rags, because A) it falls apart, and B) it leaks dye. It's literally worthless.

I wouldn't let her....and another lady was telling her mom the same thing. Don't bother buying them..not worth it, even at Goodwill prices!

The Doterra rep is actually one of the most successful in the company. Last year, she joined the “founders club” and it would be so interesting for you to do a video about that! And how it plays into the structure of an MLM. Basically, the first 200 reps to reach a certain milestone get inducted as “founders” and profit share 2% of company profits forever. Bigggg incentive to keep the top reps in your company instead of being poached to somewhere else!

She's likely one of several hundred that received that journal, it's so silly and kind of sad that she feels really special because of this, and like she was singled out to receive this special gift. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet this is the case.

i've definitely cried when i've gotten a surprise gift in the mail before (it was a small, cheap stuffed animal, a bunny, that a complete stranger sent to me from my amazon wishlist) but a big part of that story is 1-i'm disabled and don;t really have friends so i'm really isolated 2-i had just gotten home from being verbally assaulted in a parking lot until i cried out of fear and because i was so upset at being called awful names just because of a parking spot - i had been putting groceries into the passenger side of my car (trunk had some furniture or something) and this guy got so mad at me for using the parking spot next to me, despite there being empty spots all over (many of them were closer to the store!) so i had just filed a police report and i was so, so upset, and i couldn't tell my family because they were abusive to me, and i didn't have friends really, and my partner was at work an hour away.... i don't think it's THAT unusual to cry at what you think is an act of kindness if you've felt lonely and maybe unappreciated i've cried over much less, i cried because my partners grandma made a grilled cheese for me once because she forgot i was vegetarian and everything else she made had meat it took like two minutes of her time and she did it because she felt bad for forgetting but it meant so much to me because my family had me making my own food since i was 15, and i wasn't allowed to eat dinner with them more than once a week (and i still had to make my own food) it might not have JUST been about the mlm and i think it's kind of silly to assume it's the only possibility i know it's an mlm that sent it to her and everything but that doesn't mean her reaction was only because of the mlm, and it doesnt mean she's unhinged or something, she's probably just lonely and felt really good about feeling seen and appreciated it's so sad

before anyone says anything i do know it's a manipulation tactic and was probably sent to everyone of her rank or whatever what i'm saying is that it's messed up to comment on her mental health and that reaction being because of the mlm/company exclusively it's like the straw that breaks the camels back, if she's not seen by family and friends and she's feeling isolated, something like that (no matter who sent it) could cause the same reaction - she genuinely thinks someone higher up in the company thought about her and wanted to let her know shes appreciated it's not really what happened, but that's what it seems like she thinks it could really make her feel seen and appreciated, and even if its manipulation, she apparently doesn't realize that and was genuinely touched by that and it's weird to make comments about her mental health when the only things you know are that she's part of an mlm and the leader of the company (or whoever) sent out random gifts to the people working there you don't know what she's going through outside of that, if she's having a hard time and like obviously i'm super against mlms but i just think it's gross the way people are talking about her she is a victim in this interaction, she is being manipulated and it's working and people are making fun of her for crying and feeling appreciated, which could be something she's never felt before (yes even though it's manipulation doesn't mean her feelings aren't real)

Please don’t take this as an insult because it 100% not meant to be. I can honestly say I read through the post of people above this post about that 1st girl crying about the journal and I did not get people were judging or making fun of her. I picked up that people were feeling sad for her that she felt so lonely and unappreciated in her life, that she thought her Mlm preying on her to make them money was a sign of kindness. So all that to say, I’m sorry that you have had a difficult time with your family and bad run in’s with jerks, but I think maybe some of your personal challenges may have made you think people were judging her, but I don’t think from the comments I read anyway, that the intent was judging, I got that most people felt sad for her she saw what most people see a predatory action by her CEO, she saw as an act of kindness. Regarding that first video and her reaction: I got COVID very recently and my company has paid COVID leave so I felt very lucky and privileged. I got a care package in the mail! My OPS team supported a local business by ordering some bath and “self-care” products and packaging it up with a hand written note wishing me a speedy recovery. I was very touched! But I can’t imagine myself CRYING and FILMING and POSTING on social media about how much I love my company jfc. It’s a business. It’s a company. It pays my bills. I’m not gonna be an over emotional wreck because they sent a thing I didn’t ask for?

At Christmas, my Headteacher gave every teacher a care box, with chocolate, tea, bubble bath, hand sanitizer, etc. When I was having mental struggles, she would let me work from home on mornings where I had no classes on my timetable and come in at lunch. When a whole year had to isolate at our school, and I only taught that year for a day, again, she told us to work at home, even though she could have told us to come into school. All that feels more individual than a journal and at no point did I cry about it. Cause my school is not a cult. And, honestly typing that out, it almost seems dare I say MORE flexible than an MLM!

Yo, this reminds me - during the most recent lockdown in NZ (it lasted four months, which is the longest one we've had), my manager personally dropped off a care package to my house (she left it in my letterbox bc no contact). You absolutely nailed the genuine disbelief that I’ve been thinking for 2 years about Beachbody. When we all got stay-at-home orders in mid-March 2020, between the loss of the gym and the stress of the times - within the limitations of not being able to do cardio too much/hard because I live in an apartment building - I discovered and fell in love with several (and these are a ton to choose from) yoga, power yoga, strength training, core, barre, etc. (it goes on and on) YT channels with tons of videos that are 100% free. Who, if not for awhile at least since COVID work-from-home times, isn’t aware of this? I really don’t see how it’s possible - especially because the Huns are going after people on social media, so they’re not luddites?.

I tried to cancel shakeology and they charged me for THREE more months . I had a nicu baby and was so broke due to loss of wages to stay with him at the hospital3.5 hours away.It was devastating to my food budget. I got complemented for losing my baby weight so quickly, but it was actually because I felt so guilty for falling for the scam that i just took myself out if the meal budget so no one else would be affected.

My personal trainer has a masters degree and specializes in biomechanics. He charges $150 per hour. He doesn’t have to sell packages or memberships or prospect. I was referred to their center by my physical therapist after a full course of treatment. He drives a Tesla.

Augh, if the tears are sincere, I really kinda feel bad for the Prove It gal. I’m fortunate to work for a (real, for real pay, not “manifestation” pay) organization that sends the employees gifts from the CEO each season-but I certainly don’t fool myself into thinking that the CEO herself is sending them SPECIFICALLY to me and commending ME specifically for my hard work. I know she has her assistant send them to all the employees. And, again, it’s very cool of the company to do that . . . but if that gal believes that she got that package in direct recognition of her specifically . . . arrrgh, it just tells me that she’s never had a job where she was shown any kind of appreciation. I think this is one reason why so many people involved in MLMs rant about “corporate jobs” being soul-sucking-because they’ve never had a skill-based job; they’ve only ever had awful retail jobs with awful supervisors, and the MLM love-bombing seems new and revolutionary.

Young Living had the loyalty program. That's how they get you to stay on the monthly shipment and spending money. Then those loyalty points can only be used in another order, not your monthly order, and it doesn't count towards your pv.

I wasn't anti MLM at the time, because it was 15 years ago, but I knew they were a scam, because my Mom lost tons of money to Mary Kay in my teens, so I knew to never really get into it. But I joined an MLM for the discount. I never made a single outside sale. I was actually star recruiter 3 quarters in a row because I would recruit people who only wanted the discount and promise they'd never hear from me again, and wouldn't be pressured to sell. A lot just bought the kit then immediately quit, some stuck around for a future discount. I stayed for 3 years and purchased a few times a year. It was a stamp company, that did unmounted stamps, so not nearly as popular as stamping up, but I liked their designs and they were cheaper than almost every option, and the discount made it even cheaper. Of course, they went out of business with no notice, and people who did rely on it for a job were totally screwed. But for the time, it was a great discount, there were no minimums to sell each month, and this was before websites were required, so zero fees. (I also made $0 on my extensive "downline", I think it was 22 I recruited, and nearly 60 with my whole "family" because you did have minimums to get downline commissions, and I never met them because I never sold to anyone other than myself.)

I never understood why anyone would ever want a membership for essential oils. I have an entire pouch full of oils and I realistically never use them, I have a few young living ones and they are no different than the ones I got in a kit from Ross. Maybe every once in a blue moon I'll pull out the lavender or the peppermint ones but that's about it, the other ones smell too strong and I just don't have a need for them. It's ashame these people get all reeled into this thinking people are going to spend so much money on oils.
