As a mom in mom groups, most moms say no MLMs because we don’t want to be harassed to join the business. I’ve never been able to buy from an MLM without being harassed to join the business, even though I never expressed interest in it. Now I won’t buy from them at all since I’ve educated myself on MLMs, but before it was solely to not be harassed.

I had the same cognitive dissonance when in my MLM. I would argue that every company is shaped like a pyramid. Now that I am out I can see how brainwashed I was. I also think that I couldn't accept that it was a scam because that would mean I was scammed, and that is hard to admit. No one wants to admit they fell for something. When I was in high school I had the best teacher ever. He was super into us identifying fallacies in any type of argument. He said that in an argument containing fallacies and no actual proof we have the absolute right to refuse to continue and demand proof, even if they were delivered by himself. So he sometimes made claims that seemed alright, but when you paid attention you realized that it was nothing but empty words. And then we had to point that out, otherwise, we got extra homework about that topic and the wrongs it contained. Seemed really a hassle then, but now I am so grateful. So many arguments that I can debunk by just pointing out the fallacies. Like the comparison of MLM reps being small business owners. That is a fallacy called "False Equivalency" known as "comparing apple and oranges". Just because some things share a few characteristics, doesn't mean they are comparable. In this case, the fact is that the FTC class joining an MLM as becoming a sales rep, that is so strong facts that you cant win the argument by doing other small comparissons. It is like arguing that both cats and dogs are mammals and tails, therefore they are the same animal. And the ever appearing "MLM arent a pyramid scheme, those are illegal" contains a fallacy known as the "False Dilemma" black and white option. The argument implies that either illegal therefore a pyramid scheme OR legal and therefore no pyramid scheme. Completely erasing the fact of so many gray areas that you can't make that argument and deem it as the truth. Sorry for the long text, just it makes me so frustrated seeing arguments like this on more levels than one haha 😅

Your teacher sounds awesome! Also, the "it can't be a pyramid scheme because that's illegal" is hilarious because guess what? Lots of things exist until they're taken down for being illegal! Enron, for example, was legal...until it wasn't. This idea that just because something hasn't been taken down means its legal is silly. We also have a lot of powerful people in offices who rub shoulders with MLM founders (take a good look at the list of politicians from Utah, for example) and that too is halting progress in having this "business model" banned. I do feel confident that we're finally closing in on their demise, though. And best yet, I know a lot of the world is listening to the beat of the U.S. and so once we ban MLM's here, most other countries that have them will also follow suit. They're already limited in a lot of other countries, thankfully, but us banning them will hopefully give that extra push to have them completely shut down abroad as well.

If I broke someone's chair because I sat on it, I'd probably crawl into a hole and never go into the sunlight ever again. Fatshaming is awful as it is, but this hits the depths of horrendous I didn't know were possible. I feel so sorry for that lady, I know I would feel so ashamed and devastated to see that post if that were me. So, so, so horrible. My only hope is that others saw that post, and were also appalled by how disgusting and manipulative the MLM rep was.

That Target comparison is wild, because it actually works against her! I mean, name one MLM contractor (who's not in the top 1%) that makes $15 an hour for all their work. The money you spend in an MLM still mostly goes to the CEO, but the difference is that the lower-level workers don't even make minimum wage! And I hate that currently in the US, so many large corporations have a monopoly or have crushed actual small business competition so thoroughly that folks who get sucked into these schemes don't even know what an actual small business looks like!

It's actually worse in other countries. Hear me out the antimlm movement still hasn't reached a lot of countries. I live in Peru. Here MLM's are basically the go to for any type of beauty products. Makeup, alternative vitamins, shakes from MLM'S are not only everywhere they are sold in all of the biggest pharmacies. The worst part is, you don't even have other options. The only products you can find are Avon, Cyzone, Esika, Oriflame, Natura, Herbalife, Omnilife etc. These are MLM'S and no one sees a problem with it. The products sold in these countries aren't even quality tested. They send the worst products in awful conditions because there aren't as strict laws and the people stuck in these MLM's get no trips, no conferences, they don't even meet any other members of their MLM's except for their up lines.

The Happyco one made me cry. I was overweight the majority of my life. Had I broke someones chair and they went on social media to basically shame me for it and for my weight...i would have locked myself in my house for weeks and ate everything in sight. It would mortify me, shame me, and embarrass me. And imagine being someone with mental health issues. I know some people that would have taken that so to heart it would have put them deeper in depression. To the point of un-aliving theirselves. I wished doing things like she did was against the law. She is putting peoples health at risk, and she didn't sound at all worried about what she said in her reply. I'm just absolutely heartbroken for the lady that believed it was about her. I stumbled across your channel about a week ago and I have really enjoyed listening. My Uncle did Amway and one of my cousins is pretty high up in Mary Kay (she has the pink car AND NOW A BRICK AND MORTAR STORE!), and another Aunt did Avon for forever. It's very enlightening listening to your facts. And i LOVE that they ARE FACTS. I can point to sources now! So keep on keeping on! Your point about teaching impressionable children really hit home. I was watching one of your videos and my 7 year old sat down next to me. You were reacting to a video and I don’t remember which one exactly but the Hun was discussing how much money she could make and how easy it was and all that she had and can do because of her MLM. My daughter who I didn’t even think was paying attention said “wow I want to work for that company!” How to I explain to a 7 year old that it’s a scam, the woman is being scammed and scamming people at the same time? Not sure I got through to my daughter why it’s a bad idea but hopefully it will sink in before she’s old enough to become an MLM victim. With your background in education I’d love to hear your input or even see a video directed at younger viewers about what a scam is and how to recognize it. Doesn’t seem necessary but my son will be getting his first mobile phone in the summer and we are coaching him how to handle sales calls already. And with kids getting phones younger and younger it seems like content that might be a useful education aid to parents that do choose to get younger children phones.

So this is pretty much an example of the rule Also: she’s admitting in the beginning that no one in her FB groups want to buy MLM products. It took me maybe a couple of seconds (under the influence of a medication that was not supposed to mess me up) to take eyes off the road and hands off the wheel. Not sure how long it to ok me to try to avoid the car stopped waiting to turn, seriously ravage its entire driver's side and break its rear axle, clip an oncoming business van, and take out a 50-year-old lilac bush before stopping 6 feet short of hitting a telephone pole. Time kinda slowed down for me. But it couldn't have been more than a few more seconds. Thankfully, no one was hurt, by my car and the first car were totaled. Again, I was cranked up really high, having an atypical reaction to a new fibromyalgia med; this woman is upset and distracted, and she could cause some real damage.

The woman from clip 1 reminds me of a situation a friend of mine told me recently. Long story short she works in a company with a lot of stories of toxic environments, unnecessary pressure to achieve goals and very few rewards. She is a social media manager. Connect the two and, in about 1 or 2 days, she realized that maybe, just maybe, the company isn't good and she would probably face the same issues from the complaints she constantly reads about. Here comes corporate simp queen, her highly controlling and toxic co oworker who has been working for the company for about 3 years. This dense rock of a person only realized now (today) that, again, maybe, just maybe, the company might be bad after all due to the numerous complaints it receives. This is why these MLMers don't realize why people say "no MLM's please". Cause they have been programmed to ignore the red flags.

It's a shame in my opinion that people that know what they're talking about kind of have to make it a point to "not judge" because the people that just blindly believe things because it sounds good to them with zero basis can't handle being wrong or corrected. Corporations aren't in the shape of a pyramid; in most cases, they're in some sprawling nonsensical shape. While, yes, there is a hierarchy that leads to the C-level executives (not always thr CEO alone), typically the CEO reports to the Board of Directors, who are then beholden to the shareholders, which often includes the employees (especially if there is a profit-sharing scheme, pension, bonus structure, or employee-ownership). It bothers me to no end when that argument is made, as it demonstrates a strawman argument...

And she was WAY up there in the pyramid, she was coming home from one of their AMAZING retreats the night when we-all-know-what happened. I can't help but think about how terrible everything really was in that poor woman's life while she was acting, online, like her life was AMAZING. Also, I think it's important the point out that the MAIN differences between an MLM and a regular business are 1.where the money comes from (inside vs. outside) and 2. which way it flows (up vs. down). I think this is something we don't hear enough about.
