Your roof needs to be insulated more than walls to keep the warm side warm and cold side cold. Also a vapour barrier to keep the heat from escaping. I live in Yukon. We get lots of snow lately. Winter always a struggle.

If snow is melting on your roof, there are two possibilities: the external temperature is rising, or your roof is not enough insulated from inside.
@heartattackjack93492 жыл бұрын
Insulation. Lack of, and lack of ventilation along the underside of the roof. If the roof angle has been incorporated into the build, there will need to be better care of the shingles due to heat transfer through the roof. Snow can be an insulating blanket, but if there is a heat transfer to that snow, it will melt. She's learning the hard way, but so did I.
@hannahleeduggan2 жыл бұрын

As a Minnesotan who lived way too many years battling ice dams, they are crazy hard to deal with. One particular winter, we went away for a week and came back to ice dam hell. I filled panty hose with salt melt and laid them over the dams to create a channel to let the water drain off. And it worked but not before the water did go up under the shingles and we got water in the house. They are a frigging nightmare. Good luck and keep up with the raking. And definitely get some insulation. ❤️

The only reason I know about ice dams is that I’ve watched a ton of This Old House. Lots of attic insulation and modern roofing materials greatly decrease the chances of it occurring. As for the ice rink, the ground warming up underneath is melting it from the underside. Ice rinks are poured on top of sand. If you put down pond liner and sand next year it might do better.

Hannah the fastest way of getting the snow off the roof is to get a moderately strong rope and a plastic 50ml bottle. Fill the bottle with water and leave it overnight to freeze. Tie rope to bottle. Throw bottle over roof. One person either side of rope and hacksaw underneath snow across roof and snow will slough off the roof. Do that with all the roof. Should take no time or energy at all.

At that point, we couldn't find one in stores anymore, so I got my Dad one off of Amazon and he was out using it every storm even though our roof isn't flat.

Hannah, for next year: Create an embankment around the area with the snow you shovel, leaving a gap to walk through. Use a light spray nozzle on your hose and mist over the embankment on a really cold night to "set" it. DO NOT USE A TARP. For one thing it creates air gaps which crack your ice; for another it doesn't really protect your yard. Several thinner layers will create denser ice because water expands, and it's also self-leveling. This will also use less water and won't damage your yard as much in the spring. When you use your Zamboni stick-thingy, splash small amounts of warm (not hot) water from a bucket and work in smaller sections. This can be done just as easily with either an industrial-sized scrubbing broom (think Carol Burnett) or some sort of deadman (T-shaped broom handle thingy) with a towel wrapped around it. Girl, you work too hard! It's one of the things I admire about you though. When you're done skating you can use the tarp to cover your ice. So you don't have to shovel it twenty times a day. And make everybody help you pull it over FFS! Sometimes I watch Hannah doing all the work with everyone else just staring at her. 😆 I grew up in the Great Lakes region and this video made me so homesick! We'd have an igloo at one end for warming up, snow people at the other and hockey nets. I wish we would have had lights but the rink was always at least 100+ feet from the house and there were no battery packs for the lights back then. Honestly I think my grandmother hid all the outdoor extension cords so that the neighbor kids would have to go home at dark. Your lights just make it so magical. My brothers and I would stay out skating in the dark until one of us were crying...usually me. 😂 Seriously, thanks for bringing back such fun memories! I hope my instructions were more helpful than annoying. Thanks again for the warm fuzzies!

As a roofer, I wonder when your parents did their roof last because if it was done in the last 15ish years, then their roof more then Likely has ice & water shield on it and it prevents the damming issue you have. Since your having this issue, my guess is that the roof was put on with just felt paper which is fine in warmer climates, but not good for area’s with a lot of snow.
