It's important to note that 'meditating' doesn't necessarily mean sitting quietly in one spot for 10 to 15 mins. You can mediate on your own thoughts as they happen, and reflect on how they controlled your actions when doing repeative tasks like vacuuming a floor, cooking dinner, pumping gas, or just walking. It's about viewing yourself as a third person and being honest with your faults and creating solutions to things that you don't like about yourself. I am a 42 year old Autistic man who's been practicing 'Mindfulness for the last 30 years as a self defense mechanism against my own emotional responses to things that didn't make sense. I just called it Being Honest With Myself, And Trying To See Things From Their Perspective. Which turns out is Empathy Practice to others and yourself, cause you don't do yourself any favors by not understanding why you do things either.

I love it when he says "shouldn't i get angry sometimes?". Because of Mindfullnes i could control my anger and choose not to act agressive, but sometimes in life is actually better to act agressive. But i have so much control over it that acting agressive felt like acting, its feel very weird. By the way Mindfullnes does feel like a superpower, being able to feel how the chemicals of stress are being release in your brain and your mind becoming clouded is very surreal.

Mindfulness is being aware of your internal world. This awareness allows for a buffer between stimulus and response. This makes a (mindless) reaction turn into a (mindful) response. This buffer is where stillness is found and therefore your power of choice. This links closely to the idea of 1 second decisions. This space is what allows you to take ownership of those one second decisions. For example, running a long distance and the urge to quit comes up but you instead push on.

In this case, fear is a very gripping and important reaction. Anger at someone for putting us in danger is completely normal. I believe gratitude, acceptance and learning are important when we've had a scary event. Meditating The same day is best before resentments set in and shut out gratitude and learning. Love the video.

i disagree and believe mindfulness is actually mindlessness. Just as the Ying Yang goes there must be a balance between the two, negativity can offer alot of self reflection and constructive criticism. We live in a very narcissistic world where "mindfulness" can do more harm than good, when you consider the hard truth to face that we are all addicted to short term pleasures and rewards you realize that maybe it isnt good to focus on solely the present and the things that make us feel good and that you need negative reflection to change the things you hate about yourself that you know deep down need to change. Simply giving into the world is NOT a power its giving up, it being a sheep! Focusing on the good more than the bad is not how you master life. I believe this "mindfulness" is being used to further push the masses into impulsive short term thinking.

I had to watch this for school but actually really liked it. I started meditation guided by youtube hypnosis videos (some of them are bad, I know, but some of them are life changing! The Michael Sealey ones without the rain/storms are fantastic) and I swear it's changed so much about how I approach feeling anxious and depressed. It's an amazing life tool to practice. Great video! The animation was really cool too and I'd probably watch more content with this character/voice.

We have started focusing on it in my school (high school). Current generation of kids are showing themselves to be one of the most anxious generations of kids to walk the earth . . . and this should be no surprise to us given all of the "things" we have given them to help fill their heads with a nonstop swirl of voices, stories, and thoughts; clouding their access to that innate self of wisdom and compassion (especially when it comes to an ability to apply that wisdom and compassion to themselves). I agree with the video . . . I am sure we will begin to see this become more of a mainstream practice happening in schools to counteract the anxious mind that our current society eases the minds of its young into.

This is a very enjoyable albeit superficial description of Mindfulness, which is considerably more than self-awareness. By this narrow but popular definition, a soldier, or the head of a major corporation which pollutes and uses slave labour, could be mindful. Mindfulness also must include a deeper awareness of how all of our actions affect others, seen and unseen, and includes how and what we consume, and how we make our living. Mindfulness is one part of the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path, and must be practiced along with the other aspects to bring the greatest benefit to all. May all beings in all realms find happiness.

Well yea, the Buddha was a man who found the way to happiness and complete fulfillment, that is by living in the present through mindfulness, loving kindness and moderation. It also means that, one can't be fully happy and mindful if you're living a lie, like if you steal, cheat, indirectly hurt others through your day to day living, over indulge and get addicted, live in denial, etc... But just to begin with, mindfulness can also be practiced through mindful walking, mindful eating, mindful drinking, anything... the more you incorporate it in your life, the better...

The "self" is the problem. Constant obsession with one's own feelings, one's image and how to improve that self. The most powerful meditation techniques have been coopted by various self-styled gurus in the quest of money. The true goal of meditation is to create an empty space ... to flush out thoughts and physical distractions. That empty space is beneficial on the ordinary physical level as stress is reduced. On the spiritual level it can provide a gateway to a personal awareness of what lies beyond the limitations of that "self".

A super simplified explanation which makes mindfulness accessible to understand But mediation is it worth adding that meditation is only one way to gain that gap between stimulus and response. Emotional Education for example of Gestalt group work,, even Logotherapy etc. not to mention Compassion Focused Therapy (by Paul Gilbert). PS taking meds doesn't add to the proposition in my mind. I have been meditating on and off for 15+ years. What happens when new people meditate, is that they will start to feel so good and at ease/relaxed that they think to themselves 'Wow! I feel so good. I don't need to meditate today'. And then you stop meditating, and then after a few weeks, your mind and your life falls into chaos and disarray again. You get more easily swept up by strong emotions, particularly stress. So I IMPLORE you new folks, PLEASE never ever ever stop meditating. You have to make it a part of your life just as breakfast lunch and dinner. Take it from me, I've done months on and months off for 15 years and noticed this every single time.

Does anyone remember being consciously aware of their breath today at any point? Probably the only ones are the ones with meditative practices. Most people are not in conscious control of the breathing. Mindfulness should be practiced from the moment you get out of bed till bedtime.

I don't mean to sound heartless towards your comment, but its really not that bad, the way the world is going, kids need a little bit of pg-13 exposure every now & then . You don't wanna shelter them too long, I seen through my own siblings that it can create someone who is scared of the "real world" when you censor everything small like that. Because when they grow up and other adults expect them to know about it, that will be their first time hearing/seeing whatever it is you censored now and they will overreact greatly. So I suggest you either accept this for what it is, or find another video. But I'm glad that you like the video and want to share it to inform others.

*When lust, anger, greed takes possession of you watch and see, soon it will be gone. Nothing remains forever, in the mind everything is continuously changing*. Just wait and watch, and when it is gone you will feel so strengthened, so full of vigour, so full of energy that you will be surprised. And this is the energy that could have been lost in lust, in anger, in greed. Become a wather of your mind, learn the real *truth* about the nature of the mind and life in general because it is the key to overcome the mental prison permantly. Google *TruthContest click on the earth icon and read the Present*, it explains for the 1st time in history the big picture of life in every facet. It explains the nature of everything including the real *truth* about the nature of the mind and how to overcome it.

I disagree, this mindfulness movement is dumbed down logic and dressed up common sense. Instead of riding unicorns with our heads in the clouds, it is far more interesting to explore the prisons of our own minds. Lust, anger, greed, and sin in general are all part of the human condition. It makes us who we are, to deny sin is to deny our own humanity. Everything is subjective, there is no real truth and there is no need to overcome our nature. The only thing we need to do is to get off our high horse and indulge in some unmindfulness.

i think hes trying to make it accessible to a general audience. Most people in their current state of mind couldn't possibly handle the idea of not getting angry cos the person in their head feels so justified in it and so if they heard him say something like 'you don't need to ever get angry' would probably dismiss the whole thing as baloney. Once they begin mindfulness they'll realise they don't need to get angry though.

You can not go through your life repressing anger all the time, you will regret it. Basic emotions like anger stem from the limbic system, the part of the brain you have NO control over whatsoever. You can control your reaction to anger, but you can not simply prevent yourself from getting angry.

No, meditation can not cure low blood pressure, hypothyroidism, diabetes, cancer, etc. Mindfulness isnt even as effective for adhd as adderall, it isn't as effective for anxiety as xanax.
@rastlach

BladManLogan, you are right. However I would also point out that in some situations, such as ADHD and anxiety and other mental illnesses, it depends on the severity of the condition as to if medication is better than meditation and other techniques like Mindfulness. One of the main benefits over drugs is a no brainer, no. side. effects. There is also no deterioration of effectiveness over time, the opposite is the case, the longer you stick with it and do it the more effective it becomes. But yes you are right to call Ted out on his no medication statement, there are MANY conditions that mediation, prayer and other new-age things could NEVER help half as well as one simple pill or injection could.

For me it was no doubt that mindfulness was the most effective method that I ever used to relief my severe anxiety. I have triggers when I have to face social situations, when my phone rings, etc., then a tsunami of anxiety kicks in making me unable to function right, a normal person what will do after the panic is installed? oh grab that Xanax or that pill to make this go away as fast as possible right? Now through mindfulness I was able to feel that energy burning inside my chest, staying with it without judgement, it was more like an anger with fear and other emotions combined, not just simple "anxiety". After a while I start crying and an immense relief was happened , I felt so calm and at peace, then I got out and saw the world from a different perspective, like a new born baby, it was so sweet and fearless... That means that I have a suppressed emotion in me related to a trauma that's need to be explored and I don't think that a pill can do anything beside treating the symptoms, not the cause, hooking you up for years with nasty side effects. But we all are looking for the simplest solution, the magic pill that will heal you instantly, that's how big pharma make billions with false promise, but the truth is the medicine is in ancient time on mental illness branch.

THANKS OBAMA/DRUMPF! Now I have to get all my medical advice from the comments sections of youtube videos. So how many meditations do I take a day and how long do I have to wait before I can swim in the xanax pool? Me thinks meditation is often a very good idea, along with a host of other healthy choices/options ... including medical advice that is specific to you.

Emotions require energy, lots of energy, there are emotions that fix the body like love, caring, relaxation and so on and emotions that damage the body like fear and anger.... fear it's about escaping, look for shelter and hate its attack, and both are about love, protect something you love. Serenity it's the most powerful emotion it's about being here and now, the emotion that heals the body.
