Corporate was breathing down our necks to not give out too much food, but when someone complains about portion sizes, they would apologize and give them a free bowl and basically say “those employees shouldn’t have been so mean!!!”. But we were literally following protocol. I’ve gotten really tired of seeing videos making fun of employees “not giving enough food” when we were doing the best we could without corporate managers yelling at us. They would have someone come down weekly to tell us what we were doing wrong and we had to weigh the meats at the end of the night so they knew if we were giving too much.

Oh my GOD me too, it was so awful. The location managers kept telling us to add less and less because our location was constantly on the verge of going bankrupt but then we’d also get yelled at by the shift manager if the customers complained about the portion sizes. We were also terribly understaffed and I would be working 2-5 people’s jobs at the same time, (dishes, all the food stations, cashier, food prep, and the drive through line, which according to the handbook should be operated by at least one person per task) during rush hour, while the managers were standing around and talking, often cussing or arguing loudly right in front of the customers. I would also often be called in to cover manager’s shifts despite not being trained as a manager nor getting paid a manager’s paycheck. And that isn’t even mentioned the literal NeoN@zi that they decided to hire, and the sexual harassment from the managers 💀 Edit: Also literally all the managers were constantly high whenever they’d come into work and subsequently be really slow and we’d have to pick up the slack.

I straight up quit my job as a manager at chipotle last month because there were new rules and policies I would have to start enforcing on my employees every other week. We’d get watched like hawks through the cameras and if anyone stepped out of line I wouldn’t hear the end of it and would get berated for not managing my shift. There were so many contradicting rules, a new rule given one day could be something I’d get written up for the next day because it went a against another rule that was suddenly more important than the last rule. It was a constant battle for first place and we were to prioritize everything all at once.

This whole thing reminds me of how people say, "The customer is always right" to justify their crappy behavior, even though the full quote is "The customer is always right in matters of taste" which just means that they are allowed to buy whatever they want even if you think it's stupid.
@whatsmyprintedname6 ай бұрын
So I totally agree with what you're saying so one time I had a customer come in three different times and the second time they came in to me I said this is not Burger King you cannot have it your way. My boss called me the next day and asked if I said that and I said yes and I listen to the reasons why and my reasons were legit and yeah I still got promoted as a manager and I've worked at several different restaurants and it takes a lot for me to go off on people but let me tell you yeah customers are not always right customers are specials
@herbie19756 ай бұрын
In my country we have the saying "The customer is king as long as he behaves like an emperor." It basically means, be kind and behave, otherwhise you're not king and you can f... off. I will never understand the us customer service obidience like cultur. For me respect on both sides is key.
@trianglemoebius6 ай бұрын
Interestingly, "The customer is always right" is a malapropism. The phrase actually refers to the markets, not actual customer decisions. For example, if you have a company that does thing way a, but it's way b that sells, you don't get to go "well way a is better they should accept it!" because it's the people spending money who decide if a company can survive or not, not the people providing services.
@a_music_nerd6 ай бұрын
@@herbie1975see now that’s a good saying, but i feel like if we brought it to the us it would inevitably morph into “the customer is king” and lose the part that actually made it worth listening to.

@@a_music_nerd well, it is basically what op wrote, half just got cut out xD. I think at the end it is a cultural thing. For me, I belief in respect. Respect me, than I respect you. I said I was sorry about it but I couldn't give it to her unless she paid and she said “You’re not sorry” before yelling at me through the whole line and even emailed the field leader. Even the man behind her smiled and told me “you’re okay.” The GM then yelled at me even more after that bc I argued with a customer even tho I never raised my voice and he yelled at the line people the night prior about our over-portioning. Plus the fact I was forced to work closing shifts as a minor and sometimes we wouldn't be done til 12 am. Shrinkflation is a real phenomenon - portion sizes get smaller while the price stays the same or even goes up. Eg shampoo bottles get a bit smaller while they still have the same price, or the number of pastries in a pack is reduced but still the same price. And the employees arent the ones to blame for it. Its the corporations getting greedier and greedier and wanting to scam customers out of their money
@Ase8326 ай бұрын
While I agree, there’s also inflation in the economy you have to consider as well as how much product is being produced. It’s not as simple as companies being greedy, though it is definetly a part of it
@nomoretwitterhandles6 ай бұрын
@@Ase832 Major corporations are the culprit of this, because they CAN afford to avoid shrinkflation. The reason they DON'T avoid it is because of capitalism stock prices. If their stock goes down, their investors drop out. Anyone who NEEDS to raise prices for inflation struggles to do so because local companies get sh*t on for raising prices. Meanwhile everyone simps for multi-billion dollar companies for doing the same thing BUT WORSE. What we have to consider is the fact that capitalistic greed is causing all of this shrinkflation. NOT the actual global economy. Not in America, anyway!
@Ase8326 ай бұрын
@@nomoretwitterhandles there are examples such as the Costco hotdog and Arizona’s attempt to keep their teas at 99 cents that go against the sentiment that major corps can avoid it. All companies are affected by the global economy just in different levels/ways. They’re still capable of losing profits, and naturally they’ll find ways to combat that. I think there may be better ways to go about it, but that’s their logic on why shrinkflation is the solution. I agree that it’s bogus that people hate on small/er businesses when they up their prices since they need food on the table too. My dad’s boss made essentially no money just to keep the business running (they create and fix atomic forced microscopes for context)

Entitlement is engrained into CUSTOMER culture, across the whole damn world. People treat retail and hospitality service staff like shit and it's definitely not just an American thing... it's unfortunately worldwide. It stems from classism. Also stems from the fact that so many people are idiots; People stupidly misunderstanding the term 'The customer is always right' has been a big contributor to the disgusting attitudes that service workers face every day. The full saying is: 'The customer is always right in matters of taste'... but it got shortened to basically suggest that the customer is never wrong, which of course is total bullshit. Allowing customers to believe that they are never wrong and cannot be denied anything has had a disastrous effect on how staff are treated, and management allows it because they value the customers dollars far more than they value the human beings that work for them. It's disgraceful.

I worked at subway for 4 years and it scarred me for life. Either customers yell at your face for not putting enough meat and veggies to their liking (and then they complain their sandwich can't close cause there's too much stuff in it) or your manager complains that you put to much stuff in the sandwiches and imply that they'll fire you for it next time it happens (they won't, it's a sh***y job nobody wants, but it's still irritating to hear). Or it's both at the same time. Most often it's both. And dealing with all that bulls**t all day still doesn't get you enough money to escape poverty. That's why those workers are depressed and feel like they are trapped.
@RPGLover876 ай бұрын
I think part of the problem is that the pictures of the sandwiches always look way better because they have a bunch of additional ingredients that aren't part of the actual recipe, so you have an unrealistic idea of even how much stuff will be on the sandwich. On the other hand at McDonalds or Burger King the pictures do show the ingredients more accurately, even if they'll be uglier in person - a big mac will always have lettuce, pickles and two beef(? something) patties and sauce and stuff, even if it's squished.
@Shirumoon6 ай бұрын
@@RPGLover87 I mean maybe but people with a decently working brain get that those photos are fake and have nothing to do with the end product. It's also pretty clear that fastfood chains order ingredients in amounts that were previously calculated and giving some more of one or another messes it all up. Idk, it's just common sense to me just like I would never ask for free stuff at a Sephora or eletronics store. Stuff is standardized so accept what you get or spend your money somewhere else. Anything really besides taking it out on the staff.
@RPGLover876 ай бұрын
@@Shirumoon I was specifically speaking about subway as a meatball sub only has the meatballs themselves and anything else you need to ask for directly, so you'd have to memorise the poster to know what ingredients are advertised and ask for lettuce and other things to finish the recipe, while on a prepackaged food item at another restaurant it at least contains the ingredients in the picture.
