Hard Shifting P0796: Honda Ridgeline

After a severe front-end collision, and a trip to the body shop, this 2010 Honda Ridgeline looks better than it drives.
Symptoms are very hard and delayed shifts, Check Engine light, and a flashing "D" indicating a transmission fault.
I attempt to sift through the trouble codes to find the root cause of the problem...

Great video excellent. I not only enjoyed learning more about my Ridgeline but I also enjoyed how you diagnosed this one. I've had a whining noise on acceleration on my 2007 Ridgeline with 119K miles on it. I've been told by the dealer it is the transmission whining. I'm waiting to see if they will replace it since they sold me the truck with a warranty.

Bonus footage should have been half a can of plasti-dip poured over that speed sensor connector. To seal the water inside so it can make green crusties asap without being bothered. Hiram Gutierrez uncrimps and recrimps internal transmission solenoids on his channel to solve shifting issues with them, but that tool prolly not for this external one. Although the proof of concept showed that it would work for at least a while. JB weld to the rescue again? This one has time issues, the more time you have it the more issues you will have to play with. As soon as I heard loose solenoid I was wondering which one? Was it replaced? This one and not yet. Another one off find for the fix Ivan, great detective work here.

I have a Ridgeline as well (2007) with 110,000 on her. I have noticed a little bit of a knock when I first start her up. Then when she warms a little it goes away. Should I be worried?

Well, yeah, it's our favorite 1.4%er! Ya know, that guy who honestly believes that 98% of all mechanics are "hacks." He also believes that mechanics should not use their vision as a troubleshooting tool! I used to occasionally endure his torturous vids and pick out his hypocrisy. Best one is when he's fixing his own Pontiac and, after a mind numbing several part series attempting to troubleshoot it using his "scientific" and "methodological" approach, ends up ultimately guessing at which part to replace. Too funny.

This is a dual clutch automatic shifting manual transmission. It is a very different design from the classic automatic transmission with torque converter and shift bands and clutch packs.

Honda automatic transaxles are automated manual transaxles, that's why all the electronics are on the outside of the units.

No they aren't. "Automated manuals" have dry clutches and clutch forks and are otherwise identical to "regular" manuals. The only difference being that there is no clutch pedal or direct gear shift lever and the computer controls the fork instead of your foot and a servo controls the gear selection. Honda automatics have torque converters, automated manuals don't.

1: find out location of all solinoids 2: either take them out or replace them and find the part on amazon( best pricing) 3:find locations of all pressure switches and either clean out or replace them...

vechicles that cost so much when you get them sure don't hold up and throws so many codes like the thing is made with parts that don't hold up to use . solinoids , sensors, modules that suppose to keep the vechicle. running actually do the opposite. and then cost a fortune to fix the thing , old school vechicles that didn't have all these gizmos seemed to hold up better.

+Eddie Martinez power and grounds are good. the obd connector stays connected, the obd data just stops coming. I've watched the stream. I get pid, pid, pid, no data, pid, pid, no data. not in that specific order of course. them the scanner software disconnects after about 5 no data sequences.

Honda is great. VW puts all sensors and solenoids internal and it makes everything more expensive and time consuming. They also call them sealed units which never need to be serviced which everyone knows is complete bs, automatic transmission fluid needs to be changed even if the manufacturer says it doesn't.

shhhh I managed to get in there with some vice grips and crimp that coil back on straight and tight. Truck drove like a dream. Told customer that I recommend replacing the solenoid, but in reality I truly believe the existing unit will work fine for years to come :)

What was the take from this video??? Don't buy a car that was involved in a major accident where the sub frame is damaged. Too many shops takes to many short cut when they go to repair a car that was in a major accident. They just spend their time making it pretty and cheap out doing all the stuff that you can't see.

FYI: Checking the trans fluid level with the engine off is useless. All automatics have to be checked with engine running and after cycling the gear shift between all gear positions. So you would start the car, let it warm up, shift between PRNDL, then back to P, leave engine running and then pull the dipstick. That's the only way to get a usable fluid level reading.

The owners manual for MY model year when I owned a Ridgeline DID NOT say turn the engine off. My current brand new Acura (which is a Honda product) ALSO DOESN'T say to turn the engine off. In FACT, they give two methods for checking the fluid level: a "cold" method which requires the vehicle to sit off for 12 hours and a HOT method where you check at operating temperature and cycle through each gear, pausing for 3-5 seconds in each gear. So who's the know-it-all now? You must NOT be an American because you're a bigot and obviously envious of us.
