I worked as a max security corrections officer for 3 years. I'm also a martial artist of many arts. As a max security officer I've been in 2 prison riots, several fights with inmates. I've used the wooden baton and the collapsible. BATONS DO NOT WORK, ESPECIALLY THE WAY LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE TRAINED TO USE THEM. They don't work for one simple reason, RANGE. The baton is only effective at it's tip, when striking. 9 times out of 10 you are being rushed by the attacker and they close the range faster than expected. Second reason BATONS DON'T WORK. Regardless if you are law enforcement or civilian, MOST PEOPLE DON'T HAVE THE SKILL OR STRENGTH TO SWING THE BATON CORRECTLY IN ORDER FOR IT TO BE EFFECTIVE. A whip is FLEXIBLE, because it is flexible, you can swing it at multiple angles with average power and it will sting.

That's a part of my stand point as to why I like the baton. The bottom cap can be replaced by both a flashlight and a glass breaker. Imagine the impact of shining into someone's eyes at first when the situation is uneasy. If they're armed you'll know. Going in for two quick and unexpected blows, because they won't see what's on the other end of your flashlight when you're holding it up to your shoulder, will put the situation at your advantage. Specially when there's two or more attackers who likely will be armed. Remember bad guys fight dirty.

The whip hurts a lot more but the baton does way more damage. The whip carries a lot of speed but no mass and in turn damages soft tissue like it was wet paper where as the baton is heavier and slower and hard and can crack skulls. doesnt do much soft tissue damage tho and so in turn doesnt give that stinging pain like the whip.

Honestly, I was taught the use of a baton differently than your demonstration. The technique was to hit the shin, knee, or side of the knee, not the upper body or side of the upper leg. I used the shin strike once when threatened by two men. The threat was ended immediately as soon as the larger one went down screaming in agony. The second guy ran off. I was able to run away, which I did as fast as possible. I am the short stocky type, and this is very effective for defending against larger opponents.

7:10 Sounds like a good case for putting a glass-breaker tip or whatever on the baton. Most manufacturers make them. You also can't frame with the whip, though the point about achieving an underhook remains. I've done a fair amount of research on the use of batons by police in incident reports. ASPs are by far the most popular and everything I've heard backs up what you say at 2:10. I've read about ASPs (especially the silly Airweight ones) being literally bent out of shape after being used to beat on a suspect's legs or whatever without stopping the scuffle. Conversely, with other models that are built more heavily (Peacekeeper RCB, Smartlock, S&W, whatever), there are anecdotes all over the place about them fracturing bones with single strikes and ending fights. Lots of officers still carry the old side-handles or wooden straight sticks for the same reason. I'm just leery of dismissing an object that has been not only a battlefield weapon but law enforcement/self-defense tool (in one form or another) for centuries in cultures all around the world so readily. Conversely, flexible weapons have a far less forgiving historical outlook.

A state trooper I was acquainted with got called by a weigh master to deal with a trucker who was assaulting him. Trooper arrives, winds up in the fight. Deploys his issued ASP. Trooper proceeds to strike the trucker about a dozen times. Bent the damn baton so it no longer closed. Trucker finally just stopped because he realized that the next step in gaining compliance was the trooper shooting him, as the baton was totally ineffective. Trucker was not on drugs, just a corn fed country boy pissed off that he was being taken out of service for equipment violations or some shit. Trooper said he never bothered with his baton after that, if he had to fight he would use his OC or go hands on.

Asp batons are not as good as people make them out to be, several videos have came out of people bending and breaking them during stress tests. The best baton brands on the market are Euro Security Products and Bonowi, there are videos of people breaking concrete blocks and running them over with cars and the batons do not bend, I doubt a corn fed country boy is harder to hurt than a block of concrete.

Wall of text here. You've been warned. As a woman who was working a delivery job alone every night, until after bar close... I think having both the baton and the whip on hand is something I'm going to be doing, personally. If nothing else, the baton gives me a sense of comfort that I have something solid that can potentially do a lot of damage if the whip just pisses off my attacker and doesn't actually stop them. And it tends to make a noise that could be a deterrent, or at least make them hesitate for a split second. Also, a chick with multiple weapons on hand looks like less of an easy target, am I right? My reason for doing so: I quit my job as a delivery driver very quickly after a drunk guy lunged at me in full view of the public, and with three cops standing on the street right around the corner. He moved like he was going to grab me, and then laughed like it was a joke. I have a past with being abused, and I did not expect my reaction was going to be going on auto pilot and losing all train of thought beyond a very vague sense of "I should put that street sign between me and him", and then to make a bee-line for my car. Said bee-line almost had me walking into traffic, which I think startled him more than it did me at the time. I was carrying pepper spray that night and it never even crossed my mind to grab it, even though it was clipped to my bag and ready to go. I was too shocked that it actually happened, and I had completely blanked out. No fighting experience, and it was my first time having someone actually make a move at me on the street, while I was alone. I was not myself for two weeks after that. Flipping between being pissed at myself for not remembering that I had pepper spray, doubting that he was actually attacking me ("Maybe he just tripped and was laughing it off?"), terrified that it was going to happen again, and crying my eyes out because of the past trauma that was being brought to the surface all over again. My fiance has recommended that I get a baton (he has two of them for his own use in emergencies, and I have handled them and gotten an idea of how it feels to use them), and I also plan to add the whip to my list after watching these videos, as well as a couple of rape alarms. Along with that, he has been teaching me what he knows about fighting, and working with me to get my reaction to NOT be flight and mental shut-down. He also plans to help me get a concealed carry license, and to sign both of us up for fighting classes. Sorry for ranting/rambling, but I wanted to share my experience. I grew up in an abusive household, and no one believed that I was being hurt by one of the people who should have been protecting and loving me. And I couldn't fight back. Now I have the ability to do so, and I'll go down kicking and screaming if anyone tries that ever again. And I'll preferably drag them down with me!

Good idea, you can ward off the attacker with the Whip and set something up with it and Potentially use your baton, I'll be using this idea for sure. Sorry that had to happen to you, that fucking sucks, I'm glad you're taking the proper measures to keep yourself safe at all times. This isn't related to Self defense, more of Protection in general, but Make sure you always have your doors locked, have extra protection(Alarms, Door security doors, Window security, etc etc.) CHECK your surroundings, and An addition to Martial arts, you can also add Strength training. Any advantage or Chance of bettering your Survival is always a win. take note of where you are/who's nearby, sound etc. (Also, this sounds dumb but Maybe even a shield! not only can it block attacks, but you can use it as a Weapon itself! even better when you pair it with a Gun or another weapon!) (Keep your weapons with you, Restroom, Kitchen, Bedroom, Keep track of who's in your area.) A flashlight is also a great option, As seen in Hard2hurt's videos It not only gives you a great view in a dark area but Blinds your Opponent giving you the ability to set up an Attack, Defense, anything. A good idea is also a Fire Extinguisher, makes the Opponent hard of breathing when aimed and launched at, but be Cautious! like a Pepper spray if it's close range you are most likely going to be effected as well! Use it and Get to safety/Attack with the Fire Extinguisher, anything else! + You can also use it as a Smoke-screen in the event of a Shooting, wanting to get away from Point a to b, all that :VV Reading your whole comment, You are going in the right direction, Heading towards a getting a gun, Martial Arts, Pepper spray, Alarms, and for the BOTH of you to have these? Amazing! I wish you the best and hope you never have to defend yourself, but if you do, you are ready for anything. You and your Fiancee got this! (don't be afraid if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here if you need me :) ) (Spread the word of Self defense! / Protection in General :)) )

@Shacksies 3 жыл бұрын
I bought one because of your reviews on it. It seems like it would be sufficient for using in self-defense, and I particularly like the spiked pommel on it, but I have a major criticism that still makes me prefer a baton. This whip is not a concealable weapon. The whip part is far too stiff, so it's completely impractical to conceal it on my body. The best method I found was to feed the whip all the way down my pant leg, which did work, but it was extremely uncomfortable and there was a noticeable bulge running down my leg that anyone could notice after passing a perception check. It was even more uncomfortable when walking, or worse, crouching. I almost returned it for this reason but decided to keep it just to start building a collection of weapons, but it's completely impractical as a concealed weapon.

@Shacksies
@Shacksies Жыл бұрын
@@kae2678 Bag carry is just idiotic, honestly. If you don't have it ON YOUR BODY, you don't have it at all. Even with a reliable concealed carry weapon that you carry on your belt, in the same place every time, and you have trained drawing it so you have an instinctive reflex for drawing it, it has been proven just how difficult it can be to actually draw that weapon when you're being attacked and someone is actively on you. The issues with bag carry are numerous. Much of the time a woman is being attacked, they are often purse snatchers, so good luck getting your weapon when it's already in your attacker's hands. On top of that, even if they are actively attacking them , that bag is flailing around all over the place, and if they manage to secure it, now they are using both hands while digging through the 50 different objects in her purse to try to get ahold of the weapon, leaving themselves completely defenseless and wasting time trying to get this thing out of her purse. The fight is already lost by that point. It might be worth attempting that if they actually have a gun in there, but to do all that to pull out this whip is absurd. This whip is also not even flexible enough to roll up properly into a bag that any normal person carries, it would have to be a full sized backpack pretty much because of how stiff and stubborn it is. On top of all of that, you have to actually have really good martial arts training and weapon training to be able to use melee weapons effectively. Anybody who carries their weapon in a bag is probably not trained (at least, not well) because they would realize how dumb of an idea that is.

I use a collapsible baton in my work as security. We are supposed to hit large muscles with it. When I use it I hit people's feet with it. Much more effective to crush the small bones in the feet to make the attacker unable to stand or be able to use both feet. With those really thin batons (there are even retractable ones), you can easily fracture someone's ulna or radius with a half-power strike. I like the principle of maiming something quickly and getting away, for which hapkido is a good example, or any style of hand/wrist/arm breaks. The baton makes doing that easier, and [possibly] less risky by adding a little distance.

This what my state thinks about batons for self defense "in the State of Tennessee, it is against the law to carry a baton for self defense (TCA 39-17-1307). However if the person carrying the baton is either a licensed security guard or armed civilian with a valid certification card then they have an affirmative defense to the charge (similar to carry permit for handgun)." I wonder if the whip would fall under that same law? Hmm if I have to get permits to carry a weapon for self defense it might as well be a gun.

Baton is a really effective defense tool against knife because of its lengh. If you know how to use it ( Arnis de Mano is a brutal and deadly art ). No matter what you say, if you don't know how to fight with flexible weapons, you would certainly hit yourself during the fight. With a good baton, you can block an attack from a machette, you can with a whip. According to me, the average little guy facing a aggressor with a whip like yours would be unable to use it with effeciency.

What I'm hearing is, if I expect close range-grapple fights, then use the whip unless you really really good at practical stick grappling shenanigans. You have valid points I believe. But I would say cops don't use the baton for self defense, but to beat a perp into submission. But the baton used for defense will work at times. But agree the whip is better except for carry, the whip doesn't seem like it's easy to carry.

I appreciate the information you put out, and that stinger whip looks pretty cool I am going to get one to train with. But to say "batons don't work," is silly. Make distance, prevent advance, break contact. Can also block and strike, you can use it if you basically never train to the same degree as you could a lead pipe but its built better than a lead pipe for this purpose and its always in your pocket. Applications for the baton: -Keeping a tweaker outside of arm's reach -Visual and auditory deterrence to prevent escalation to begin with -Parrying blows (more mass, more interia in the shaft) -Triangle locks -The "drunk come along" -Striking a weapon arm for an involuntary disarm The advantage that the baton gives you is that it doesn't necessarily rely on pain compliance, but is still capable of it. I started laughing so hard when it went to ground grappling with the whip, because while the aggressor is trying to position, he'd be getting whipped to the absolute shithouse and SERIOUSLY rethinking how much he wants to rob this guy. And then, yeah, if the aggressor starts getting good positioning, you've got the emergency pommel spike right there to make him rethink further how much he wants to do this. Honestly, IDK law, but you'd figure being able to clearly lay out "Look, he tried to attack me and I whipped him and he continued to attack me, so I whipped him more, and he tried to get dominant position to break one of my limbs or choke me out, so I dug the spiky end of the whip handle into him. I CLEARLY used the dangerous part of the self defence weapon last, it was my absolute last resort." would hold up a little better in court than "He came at me aggressively so I brained him with my self defence club/stabbed him with my self defence knife/shot him with my self defence AR15."

The point that people might be missing from the initial arguement about the baton is the premise of consequence. We know that it hurts like hell and I love the break down of how clunky it can be operationally but how liable is one legally with the baton vs the whip? I have both but the baton is one of the multiples for the house in case something truly horrible happens. At 1:40, another thing the baton dies better is “noise”. The sound of the baton deploying is scary, akin to the cycling a pump action. Folks don’t have to speak your language to “get it”, that the hurt is about to happen. Sometimes that sound can be a deterrent. And it doesn’t take much whack with a baton, against a bone or a joint, to make it a bad day for the receiving person. However, if the idea is to just mess ‘em up, that whip, on flesh, is gonna create a lot of damage!

I have bent an ASP baton before but I do have to swear by my Peacekeeper. It hasn’t let me down yet. You do bring up some good points but our command staff would never approve carrying a whip-like less lethal weapon. And part of that is due to training; right now I can testify in court that I have used the baton before and know what effects/damage it can cause to the suspect. Much like the Taser and OC spray. Liability, unfortunately, states that there is no state-level training for these whips right now and thus that could go very badly in court.

When it comes to impact weapons, having more mass in the striking end almost always makes it more effective. A baseball bat will do more damage than a similar length wooden stick. The velocity that matters is at the moment of impact. A heavier weapon takes more to get it going, but it can still reach a decent velocity by the moment of impact.

2 adds to the conversation I hope: Never tried the whip but it seems awesome. Back in the 80's some Cats i knew carried a few feet of speedometer cable attached to a handle, they said whatever it hit , it cut , if swung hard enough . Can't verify but makes some sense. I think you start wailing away with one of these, shit is going to happen and it will be ugly . I bet you wrap up a ham with some denim in will cut right through . I carry an ASP baton in my back pocket but don't consider it good for anything but hitting human limbs or fending off attacking animals. If maybe I have a reasonable chance to break a wrist holding a knife or just get some space i'd trust it. Otherwise the mass just isn't there for more than maybe opening a cut on somebodies skull .If they are jacked up or just adrenalized, you aren't likely to knock them out, And to be honest, they can collapse at odd times if you don't extend them really hard. You may try a poke and it just collapses .It's what i use in place of a solid club or walking stick made to fight with if I am limited to what I carry. . Plus I am trained to use sticks for what it's worth. I'd rather put that whip in an untrained persons hand instead of the collapsable baton.

While I stipulate that the whip is FAR better for law enforcement, the baton has quite a few things that were the reason i even bothered with it in the first place, and eventually made me love it - I like the weight, shape, feel and balance - it deals well against morons holding blunt weapons like pipes or planks of wood and most of all to me - It is just the right length to have a plethora of techniques. I can use sword techniques from fencing, HEMA, Kenjutsu, etc. I can use dagger techniques. I can use it as a simple extension of my natural movements, I can leverage easier when I initiate a clinch (i don't do advanced stick grappling, but fuck if Sumi Otoshi isn't better with this thing), etc I feel like its the better weapon for a fight you start but the whip is better for self-defense which is what we are after here. I just had to contribute to some other great uses for the baton, also it really seems like police don't know how to swing the baton very well when they swing for the legs and such. Granted a tool for them should be easy to use, but if its so old and popular you would think they would improve the technique by now
