It sounds louder when its hot outside, and at about 2000 rpm, the engine is completely warm after about 40 mile commute. The bike done 9500 miles. Any ideas?

My only bike has been a Honda Shadow Sabre 1100. She's rock-solid reliable and runs smooth and quiet. Yesterday I test-drove my first Harley: An '04 Dyna Wide Glide, with the Twin Cam 88 powerplant. It roared, it rattled, it shook, it vibrated and it VROOMED! I've never had so much fun on a bike!! I want one!!

I own a 2005 soft twin Cam 88. Do not worry guys this noise is fairly normal on these Engines. Although the twin Cam 88 is 1 of the most reliable. You will find that guys have over 200,000 miles on some of these In Harley forums and all they did was replace the tensioner's, And possibly a Cam plate around a 100000 miles. If you have high miles on your bike and you hear piston slap in that could possibly mean a top end rebuild.... But depending on how you ride your bike unless you hear really loud valve noise I wouldn't stress. Mine has only 10000 miles and I hear Valve noise as well

I just got back from a ride. I was digging on all of the valve train upper end noise and rattles. That was great. 74,000 miles and the noise has been consistent and groovy. Not as violent as my trusty old Triumph 650's valve noise, but cool just the same! Honda had a hissy fit a couple decades ago trying to get their Shadows to vibrate. Don't be surprised if they try to get their bikes to rattle more! And the top end noise on my old Panheads,, was like bongo drums, music to the ear

I installed a set of rocker lockers on my 2001 twin cam. This little $15.00 kit locks the rocker shaft to the mount so that the shafts will not rotate in the bore. It helped the noise in my bike.

eli das Okay here's the progress I've made so far... I tightened the number 1 exhaust pushrod one "flat"... made no difference at all so, I retuned to to original adjustment. Then, I tightened the number 1 intake one "Flat" and there was an instant improvement. The irritating "floating-tick" between 2200 - 2700 RPM is now gone but, there is still one more little tweak... I'll do number two intake and exhaust tomorrow. Will report back at you. I have been told by several experienced HD technicians not to expect to get rid of all the noises my engine makes because is't at stage three and 10.5:1 and apparently, noise comes with the added performance but, I'll still tweak it a bit.
@WaxMeister9 жыл бұрын
Gee Whizz All right, I've got the bike back together and I must say, there is a significant difference now. While I still have some valve noise which is to be expected given the modifications, there is a dramatic reduction in overall engine noise. The noise I was most troubled with seemed to occur then the bike was cruising on a level road with very little "pressure" on the drive train. There was an aggravating come-and-go noise which I now know was the spring set in the compensator sprocket assembly. I've replace mine with the SE compensator set and the difference in the engineering is significant. My next new HD will have the compensator sprocket changed before I take delivery, the OEM sprocket is TRASH! So, my strategy of tightening the pushrods 1 flat worked well but did not get rid of it all (I was not counting on that seriously) but, it is much better. The most noise came from the sprocket spring set which is now gone and the bike is much quieter and a pleasure again.
@georgecowboydearing65269 жыл бұрын
Gee Whizz I have what I think is the same issue with mine? Seems to sound kinda like a valve is slapping or spring is weak at certain rpms? I've replaced lifters, rockers, pistons, oil pump, and seated valves and still the noise is there? You say you adjusted the pushrods to flat? You mean turn them to where they have ran out flat so they have no spring left to them? If so then I might try that... But, I just really would love to know what the hell is wrong with my bike!! It has been upgraded with the gear drive cams and the 1550 kit and roller rockers! 2000 ultraclassic that is getting only 28 miles per gallon and that sucks cause my buddy has same set up and gets 58 mpg?
@georgecowboydearing65269 жыл бұрын

He says my V&H system just overpowers the noises and my bike probably sounds the same but I swear it's the same noise heard in this video. Since it seems like such an easy fix for the problem it's probably already done to my bike. It had some work done to it already by previous owners. I just finished having a local mechanic shop drive mine... Has the same noise.. His first question was did I just replace my windshield, which I had done over the winter.. He asked me to remove the windshield and drive the bike.. It was interesting but the noise was hardley noticable while driving.. Of course I could here still here it and it drives me nuts but he told me it was normal... Strange to me that a noise that loud would be considered normal.... I am told its probly the valve seat.. Where the valve contacts the seat.. Needs a new valve job.. The seat is worn out and the area were the valve contacts the seat is what causes the noise....New 3 angle valve job should fix it I am told... I used a steth ascope and narrowed the noise down to my front cylinder head intake valve...

jofuzzy the only problem with swapping to gear-driven cams is you need to check the run out on your crankshaft and you can have no more than thousandths of an inch it's much cheaper and less of a headache to just replace the cam chain tensioner but I do agree it is a permanent solution to a notorious problem
@Gefrce6 жыл бұрын
@@jonlarocca4775 Late reply but if anyones reading through the comments looking for info on this.. There's a Screamin' Eagle kit for replacing the spring loaded system with the newer hydraulic tensioner system used from ´07 and up. It's actually not too bad of a deal. The kit includes the updated cam plate and a high flow oil pump. I think it's unnecessary to go for the gear drive in most cases, you'll save some of your hard earned $$$ and crank run out won't be as much of a problem. (always a problem if far out of spec, obviously) If you're thinking about getting something like this always look around on places like Ebay before going straight to HD or your local shop, a bit of luck and you'll get a great deal.

The main noise your hearing is the rocker arm shafts are moving back and fourth. There is a notch in the shaft but the bolt holes in the support plate are too big to lock them into place. All you have to do is remove rocker covers, support plates and install bushings and the noise is gone. Rock out bushings are what I just used and now my engine is very quiet. There are other issues but the MAIN noise is what I'm telling you about. Put the bushings in and you will be amazed at how much quieter your motor is. 2000-3000 now on my bike is quiet and smooth. It's only 15 bucks shipped and an easy fix.

Develops 101 HP on the dyno and runs out like a bat out'a hell but that fuckin' noise!!! I've changed the lifters last fall using Black Ops lifters but, no difference. Taken the bike to 6 shops, 2 harley dealers and 4 performance/speed shops and they have said one thing in common, "it's normal for a Harley engine to have valve noise". I'm running 100% Synthetic (No choice its a matter of heat management with added LUCAS Synthetic conditioner (like STP) which helped a lot but it's still there!) Well fuck I say... I'm gonna get to the bottom of it starting by carefully, very carefully adjusting one valve at a time every day this week and running the bike to try and hear any difference. If that does not work, Im going to replace the compensator with the SE kit ($1000 fuckin dollars im sure!) I have had 1 shop suggest the changing the Compensator should have been done when I did the 104 SE upgrade - okay, I'll do it then.

Listen up. Your engine is the grey base twin cam which should be the twin cam B design. If its the twin cam B it has a flywheel chain in the lower engine case that turns two counter balancers and that has a chain guide plus two tensioners. I'm not talking about the two timing chains and tensioners behind your cam cover, but am talking about the chain in your engine case. The way to tell if yours is a twin A or Twin B is to look under your oil filter and if it if the engine case curves out to a tip under your filter then you have the twin B engine. Next quite listening to these morons at a shop that say these engines all have noise because this is not true! When you start your engine place your fingers on top of your rocker boxes and if you don't feel bumping then that isn't your problem and feel of weach push rod tube while running and if its there it will have a thumping feel. Now remove your cam cover and check your tensioners there and if its not those then your lower case will have to be taken apart and your long counter balancer chain and guide and tensioners will have to be dealt with. Copy what I have texted here and rely on it like it is RELIGION
@theodavies8754Ай бұрын
These are still out there. Run it too rich and the motor doesn't get up to full operating temp. Cam cover should get hotter than a fresh brew coffee. Ticking when properly hot is usually either the oil/type of oil or lifters are not doing so well. Messed up ignition from the wrong plugs and after market leads complicate it.

All twin cam engines are a fatally flawed design for the get go, in my opinion, and here's why: There are two silent chain drives on your bike, one outboard of the cam plate and another silent chain assembly on the inboard side of the cam plate. The cam chain tensioners are made of PLASTIC, yes, PLASTIC, rubbing against a metal chain. It is not a matter of IF, they will wear out and it not change out in time, will break into little pieces and get sucked into the oil pump, and destroying the oil pump and then they particles go into the crankcase and the cylinders and catastrophic engine failure will occur. Harley does not publish the fact that the owner must periodically inspect the tensioners for wear, or at what intervals, not published in the owner's manual or the Service Manual. And a tensioner can go out at 3k or 30k, you just don't know when your engine will implode if you never inspect them. And it is a royal pain to inspect and to change them out. You have to almost tear down the engine to do it and it takes special Harley tools to press out the cams from the cam plate. There is no permanent cure for this flawed design. Another major problem with your engine is that the flywheel assembly halves are merely pressed together, at the factory, on a 400 ton press so, there is nothing holding the two halves together so they will not come out of true. They will come out of true sooner or later causing the pinion shaft and primary shafts to go out of spec on the run out at the end of the shafts and as they wobble, they are tearing up bushings and bearings. The previous, single Cam Evo engine flywheels had a crank pin bolt and nut to hold the halves together and worked great.ggi Only solution is to tear down your engine, take flywheel assembly to a specialty shop and have them dynamically true and weld the two halves together, like Harley should have done. Another problem is that this engine runs very hot, and has the potential to cause your pants leg to catch on fire, and you suffer 2nd and 3rd degree burns, as has already happened to some owners. In California, 300,000 Harley owners have filed an injury lawsuit against Harley as a class-action lawsuit. That's why you have to have a heat shield for the rear cylinder. Sorry to give you the bad news but, sell the bike and get an older Evo Harley single cam 80 engine. Very reliable and easy to work on and no plastic, tensioners or pressed together, flywheel assembly. Evos were 1340cc, made from 1994-998. REMEMBER CAVEAT EMPTOR= LET THE BUYER BEWARE.

That's your problem, pal, free speech is a right to every citizen. You would know that if you were one. And getting the word out on a bad product to protect bikers is what it's all about. I am a full time biker, not a weekend weenie. Been riding longer than you have been alive. Besides Harley's are being made in India, bigger factories there than here. Harley had a major restructure in 2014 and 25% of the work force, were forced to re-train their replacements, which were foreign workers, in Milwaukee and if the American workers, didn't want to train their replacements, then they jeopardized their severance package. Harley is a multi-national corporation where shareholder interest is at the top to their priority, not there Baby Boomer, customers, like me, who are dying off. They are selling inferior products to guys your age, who don't know their milk from chocolate. Ignorance may be bliss in your case, but, I am looking out for the hard working stiff parting with his hard earned money for a great product, not a bad one. Harley sells more clothing here than bikes. And for the last 30 years all the front fork assemblies on all Harleys are made by SHOWA in Japan, in case you didn't know that. So, about 80% percent is "American" made, the rest come from places like Japan, "metric", remember? Are you a shill for Harley or a dealer who doesn't want the word out? FREE SPEECH AND TRUTH TELLING WINS OUT EVERY TIME.

+tomcata1467 You might want to do some more research there, while you are right about the front forks being made by Showa, but so are the rear shocks. Do they say made in Japan, YES, are they, NO. They are made in South Charleston, Ohio. I've done some contracted maintenance work at the plant and watched them being made right here in the good old U.S.A., JUST LIKE THE HONDA GOLDWING, Marysville, Ohio, the Honda engine plant in Anna, Ohio, the Honda transmission plant in Indian Lake, Ohio, and the Honda body panels and other frame and structural parts made at F and P in Troy, Ohio. All say made in Japan even though they start with ingots of aluminum and end up with running engines, some of the materials may come from Japan, but the shit is built entirely in the U.S.A. SO IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT, I GUESS THAT MAKES THAT 80% FIGURE YOU HAVE, INCORRECT!!! You're right the truth does win out every time, and having all the facts might keep you from looking like a JACK WAD in the future. Just knowing you had no clue that Showa produces Harley parts right here in this country makes me doubt half of what you say. I just had my cams, bearings, tensioners, chains, lifters, and pushrods all changed by what is arguably one of the best bike mechanics in south Florida on my '02 twin cam 88. It had 62,488 miles on it and they had never been changed, the tensioners were trashed and making all kinds of noise, the chains were also worn, but everything else was in good shape. I went with a mild mid range set of cams and just had the rest replaced for good measure. He used bolt cutters to remove the old push rods and replaced them with adjustable pushrods so as not to have to tear the whole top end down. After seeing it done, $60-$80 for the special tools, parts, a case of beer, and a warm Saturday afternoon, I could have done it at home, BUT, I had just bought/stole the bike, for what I paid for it, I wanted to be sure there were no other problems, so I had a professional go through the whole bike. He said all you gotta do is change oil, tires, brakes, and put gas in it for the next 40,000-50,000 miles then change the tensioners again, $60 for the tensioners and $10 for the gasket!!! Again maybe you should check your facts, that will only require pulling the timing cover, releasing the tension on the pushrods, pull the cam plate and replace the tensioners, put it all back together, adjust the pushrods and done in an hour or two. You might have some experience with bikes, but don't get on here and try to discourage the DIY're or scare the owners of twin cams, they are not the devil. YES they make noise in the top end, weather it be valve train, or piston slap, it's the nature of the beast, mine makes the top end noise. Are the 80 cid quieter and easier to work on, SURE, cheaper to work on, MAYBE, more reliable, well like anything else with an engine if you take care of it, it will take care of you!!! Before you ask, I am not a dealer, mechanic, or employee of Harley Davidson, but I have been an owner and rider of ONLY Harley for almost 30 years, I've even built a few. Everything has it's good and bad points, but don't present things as truth till you know the facts. By the way there are two ways to get rid of that noise, louder pipes, or in my case I ride an Ultra, I just turn the music up louder. If you're gonna ride a twin cam, you're gonna have that noise. If the noise is too loud or irritating for you, ride an old iron head sporty around for a week or two, you'll find out quick what engine noise is, you can hear it over drag pipes.

+tomcata1467 Have you described UMBELIEVABILY my experience and my endless nightmares from last holidays trip to super hot Croatia & Slovenia. From then, I've got adjusted all the top end and all the timin' side using exclusively Screaming Eagle stuff. Las week, after three monts of peaceful comfort with my Softail TC, she suddenly collapsed an hidraulic tappet. Man, oh, man, whadda bull****. Dismantled everything, it's showed that everything is OK...!! Faack it!!

You can check out many YOU TUBE videos, posted by Harley owners about the inherent problems with all Twin Cam engines, which are junk and unsafe, in my opinion.
