Hey Mike. Your probably gonna get tired of hearing from me but i just can't get enough of your videos! After a long day of dealing with people that when u first meet em they already have an attitude and it takes about 15 minutes before I get em laughing and put em at ease, after doing that 10 times a.day it starts to wear on me, but since i found your channel and started watching your videos I instantly forget about the folks that are sometimes complete a-holes not all of em are a-holes.but some are! I really appreciate what u do and I felt it necessary to tell u that. I also want u to know that someome, me, who knows nothing about 2 wheelers, plenty of experience with 4 wheelers but not 2, and after being willed enough parts to build 2 bikes including a couple straight leg frames 2 delkron shovelhead motors trannys wheels bars triples forks all sorts of stuff which I was gonna sell off piece by piece. Since I found your channel and started watching you've inspired me to build one and "get in the wimd" I felt it necessary to tell u that too. My motors are shovels but I came here to look at the differences between the two. Anyway thanks Mike this is just what I needed in my life right now. Do u have a website or an email address, some way to send u some pics of what I have and maybe get some advice on what direction I should go? Thanks again dude your the best!

Generally, contacting through the comment section is how I connect with people for now. You know I have a kind of corny belief. I believe most people are basically good. I believe it because it enables me to live in a world of chaos. But, I've always been this way. I need it. I worked in a K-Mart store back in the early seventies. I learned more about dealing with the public there than anywhere. We're all just people, hopefully learning our way through life. Thank You, and Enjoy the Holidays!

Mike, on my 1985 FXRS there isn't a large nut like what is in your video to unscrew to remove the pinion gear. Mine has two flat side and two rounded side that don't allow for a good wrench to grab onto? Is this a pressed on gear?
@pacificmike95013 жыл бұрын
No, you're describing a nut. It requires a special socket to remove it. I have a homemade one I've had for years. I believe most of the big aftermarket suppliers have that socket under "tools."

It's roughly the same as Shovelhead. But, with the Softail, you've got the oil tank to deal with. Makes it hard to get to the starter. Follow the manual, but, with some long "snakey" tool combinations, you can loosen the tank and raise it enough to R&R the starter. It's not easy, but can be done. Take it slow.

@pacificmike95015 жыл бұрын
I don't remember what it took, but, when the twin cam motors first came out, it was done. It didn't take long to find out it wasn't a great idea. The first thing that comes to mind is the difference in bore sizes. After that, it got more difficult. I'm sure it's been done successfully, but don't know what the advantage would be or exactly how much effort it takes. The ones I remember were called the "Fatso Motor."

Is it a last resort to split cases? reason I'm asking is, say I want to put new case seals in my shovel?
@pacificmike95015 жыл бұрын
Yep. Hate to take something apart that's functioning well. The only seal is at the output (sprocket shaft) side. After that, the ony major leak would be the case mating surfaces. The cases are split, lapped and then put together with the proper sealant. Then, the endplay of the flywheel assembly must be verified correct. A little "weep" here or there is not a big deal. Once a motor is opened up completely, it's time to get real serious.

Firstly, do you agree with that opinion? If so, do you think it would be better to buy a late 1990's Harley Sportster, rather than the newer ones?
