One of the best videos ever. Great details for a beginner as well to develop good habits. Cleaning threads and how leaving oil below a bolt will cause hydraulic lock and damage. Especially when that oil heats up. Use of assembly lube. Preload threads with lock-tite. Not letting junk fall in the engine. Use of scrub pads. How to check the lifters have bled down. If I had the rockers off, I would replace the push rods with 1 pc vs 2 if I had 2 pc. I would have shown you running a tap to clean thread cavities. you mentioned it. But a newby wouldn't get it. Really awesome! Clear video. Explaning thought process is the best part. Thank you!

Thanks again for all the attention to detail. I only screwed up one thing in the process.... But because of your lifter bleed down procedure, I caught my mistake way before start-up. I had the push rods in the wrong places. The exhaust rods are slightly longer (and black, not silver). Since they were swapped, your bleed down procedure wasn't happening like you showed. In fact, the exhaust was loose right away and the intake never got loose. So I took the rocker assemble back out and sure enough the push rods (not the same length) were switched. So, THANK YOU FOR ALL THE DETAIL!!!!!! Project completed.

@HarleyDavidsonWizard

I'm assuming you mean the S&S roller rocker arms. Make sure you relieve the aluminum webbing in the appropriate places in the rocker box covers to make clearance for the roller rockers. It's a super important step.

Brother I've watched this video twice before actually tearing into my HD. I have had the rockers out at least half a dozen times in the year and a half that I've owned the cycle. The last time was to put rocker lockers on, of which I hated. They only make them for the exhaust side and not the intake side. It drives me crazy to hear lifters on the intake side only, seemed louder oddly. So I decided to take them out and replaced the gaskets while I was at it. I did everything as you did, chased the of threads to remove the old lock-tight, blasted them with cleaner and then pressure air, and I put it back together. IT RUNS F***ING GREAT NOW. Really couldn't believe the difference. Kudos Harley Wizard!

Just want to thank the author for making and posting this video. I used it yesterday to fix a rear leaky bottom rocker gasket on my 2010 heritage. I replaced all the gaskets you see in this video and bought the upgraded breather too. Your video was EXCELLENT. The ONLY step that I didn't do was remove my tank completely. I removed the bolts and placed a 2x4 under it. Other than that.. Perfect step by step procedures that are easy to follow along with. My bike fired right up!.

First off - gotta say you rock. Love your videos and the way you cover the "how-to" and the "why-to" of the job! A couple of weeks ago I saw some oil weeping from between the rocker box and the rocker box cover on my rear cylinder (2013 Heritage Classic). Figured I would get to it when I got to it as it wasn't all that bad - I could go for a ride and wipe it down when I got back and there wasn't enough oil that it ran down to the cylinder head. Then I saw this video after looking for and find a number of others. Gotta say this one was a game changer - the best and clearest description and discussion of how to get it done. Gave me the confidence needed to actually get the gaskets and do the job. Between your video and the shop manual (yep, that was the very first "accessory" I bought for my bike) I was able to, more or less, duplicate the work you did in this video. Replaced both gaskets on both cylinders because I figured if one was bad, the other was going bad (and remembered the breather O-ring) and even cleaned the oil out of the rocker box bolt holes (with solvent and compressed air - genius that!) and wire-wheeled all the bolts. Took about 8 hours - obviously didn't rush the job. Went for a 100-mile test this afternoon (a father's day gift to myself) and checked all the "silver parts" when I got back. Not a drop, drip, or weep to be found! So - thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your knowledge with those who would rather do the job themselves!

There aren't enough thumbs ups or stars to give you for this video my friend. I watched it at least 3 times, taking copious notes. I did the job on my 2014 Street Glide Special today. It already had the new style breathers but I replaced them anyway. Used all OEM parts. I did everything exactly like you said and then it came time to start 'er up. It immediately had a tapping noise that scared the bejesus out of me. Started it 3 times, let it run for 2-3 seconds and shut it off. Spent the next hour all depressed wondering what I possibly could have done wrong. Reviewed everything and could not find a single thing. Did some Googling and found a thread where someone said you need to let the bike run for a 1-2 min, faster idle, and give it some revs for the oil to come up. After about a 60 sec that's exactly what happened and it quieted down nicely! Purring like a kitten now, and no more leak! BRAD YOU ARE THE BEST!!

Lengthy. I apologize. If you don't answer, I totally understand. I know you cant save the whole world. But, your videos are top-notch. So I am sure you are the guy with the answer I need. 2012 street glide 103. Runs like a scalded dog. 28,000 miles. this past year late in the season I started hearing a noise in ( what appears to be ) the top in the front. Sounds almost like the valves chattering in an old 4 cylinder tempo I used to have only faint. Goes away sometimes and then comes back. While idling you can hear it. But sounds more like a ticking or tapping noise. While riding, in certain RPMs and during gear change it sounds more like a chatter. Everyone says that it is likely the rockers that are notorious for this sound. Rocker lockers are the FIX. BUT, 1) it appears to only be in the front. 2) sounds LOUDER to me than what a rocker thrash might sound like. SO, what I plan to do is, only remove the top rocker box covers ( since I have no leaks ) and rockers and install rocker lockers. BUT, while I am at it, I want to go ahead and replace the lifters and pushrods. Kind of a nip it in the bud type thing if I happen to have a lifter failing. As for my question. Is there anything I should look for while inside as to what would be an obvious problem ?? I have the tools, the know-how, and even a service manual. I just lack the experience that you obviously have.

I love your work...the way you pay so much attention to every little detail. I can only hope the mechanic at my Harley dealership does half of what you do. The only thing I'll say that just drives me bat $hit crazy that you do in all of your videos is: 3/4 of the time, you call the "BOLTS" screws. I know you have to know they are 2 different things. You are screwing in bolts on the motorcycles, screws have sharp points on the ends where bolts have flat ends. You probably don't even realize you are saying it but trust me, you do... A LOT!!!! Other than that, I find myself binge watching your videos to wee hours in the morning. Keep up the fantastic job and keep making these great videos.

Great video.. 2 observations if I may. I can't understand why any one would run the head breather vent hose up hill.. Turns it into a sort of sink trap. Other observation. I noticed you used the 1/2 " dog bone at a 90 degree angle to the wrench but didn't mention why. For the sake of some DIY guys and girls I'd mention setting the dog bone at 90* keeps the torque accurate. Thanks again.

you know what I was thinking just as I was ordering my dog bones. Seems like an awesome tool, if you don't have one hear me out. I have these wrenches in my toolbox, they are box end and open end. I could use a 1/2" box wrench and stick my 1/2" drive torque wrench in the box end and use it as a dog bone. Now 100 old bikers will prob tell me that's how they have always done the back rocker box but it just popped in my head. I ordered a 7/16 12pnt ratchet wrench for the lower bolts. Seems like every time I try to use an Allen something goes wrong with it and I like the hex heads better. hope it works. I ordered parts, did all the work and the 1st thing I found is my breather bolts were backed out about 5 turns on 3 of the 4. That's where my spark plug leak was all along I'm pretty sure. My breathers were 1pc plastic with an umbrella in them. on 2002. Filters just crumbled and came apart like nothing. So it's not a total waste of time.

@@HarleyDavidsonWizard I sure would appreciate it. On hot starts , my 2012 RG Custom stage 2 gear drive sometimes bangs horribly. I’m worried about replacing it w/ out proper instructions.

Lifter ticking is normal for 45 seconds or so until oil pressure pumps the lifters back up

When you use the dog bone adapter on the torque wrench, do you have to adjust your foot/inch pounds to compensate for the length of the adapter? I know when you add length to a torque wrench you increase the torque.
@HarleyDavidsonWizard
@HarleyDavidsonWizard 4 жыл бұрын
No torque wrench adjustments are required when the dog bone is at 90 degrees from the wrench head. If I do use the dog bone adapter inline with the torque wrench I just use the low end of the torque spec. And that's been close enough for me.
