As an autistic person I totally agree with you and appreciate you talking about this! The "acoustic" joke actually came from the autistic community and was just a harmless little joke amongst ourselves (kind of reminds me of "Autism is my favorite season" (instead of autumn), I love that one personally) but then allistic people started using it against us and anyone who does anything even remotely "weird". It's definitely not fun anymore. And the "a little bit of the 'tism" started within the community too, but I don't particularly like that one because it perpetuates the idea that you can be "only a little autistic"

I completely agree with what you said about autism. I'm in the process of getting my diagnosis at the moment. When the topic began to gain popularity online, it was a relief to me -- it felt like there was finally some normalization and misinformation was actually getting shut down and corrected. But now... it's so far from that. I hate to speak negatively about online autism spaces for fear of downplaying or invalidating the experiences of others, but the excessively lighthearted discussion and 'jokes' regarding autism have gone too far in my opinion. It's really important to have open discussions and acceptance for autistic people. It's important not to demonize autism. But it's also important to treat it with the gravity and complexity it deserves. It's considered a disorder and a disability for a reason -- it presents real and often severe impairments in our lives. I'm usually apprehensive when allistic people start talking about autism but I appreciate that you pointed out this trend. It's really bothersome and honestly can quickly lead to ableist jokes at our expense, in my experience.

The thing about the father and son monitoring each others porn intake is so crazy. Especially for a 17 year old boy. When you go that far to suppress someone's natural urges or demonize sex they're going to internalize a lot of shame and probably resentment for the person who taught them that. It can never be a good thing. Maybe they should try to teach their son about sexuality and how to practice safe sex. But what do I know im not a botanist.

10:21 THANK YOU I’m so glad you brought this up - the diagnostic points have changed drastically for autism & I/DD (intellectual developmental disability). Hot take to have online, but my brother actually has autism. Like he doesn’t talk much, and actually has support needs. I understand autism is a spectrum - but I have a very hard time with people self diagnosing and labelling themselves, or people who require no support talking for the whole community.
@Daire0311 ай бұрын
(sorry this is such a long reply) as an autistic person who was late diagnosed with 'mild' autism (even though i cant work, live by myself, or make friends outside the autistic community), self diagnosis is the first step to getting an official diagnosis. female people, poor people and people of colour are underdiagnosed and often misdiagnosed so it is important that they can self diagnose as a way to express themselves and their needs. autistic people know more about autism than doctors or relatives of autistic people, however our voices are deemed as the least important ones in conversations about autism, so it is important to believe autistic people when they say theyre autistic and to not condemn self diagnosis. underdiagnosis causes alot more harm to autistic people than overdiagnosis does. i agree tho that autistic people with lower support needs do dominate these conversations. i think kurtis was talking about the allistic people making fun of autism, not the actual autistic people who make jokes about their own autism. i dont know if you were implying that the change in criteria for autism is a bad thing, but i believe its a good thing. autism as a diagnosis is only around 100 years old and most of the research was eugenicist, racist, and ableist, literally it was done by nazis.

I heard something the other day through a chronically ill friend. It was a meme that was saying how people normalize illnesses/disorders as "oh everyone has those symptoms" and the reply was that everyone pees every day, but if you're peeing 16 times a day that would make it different. I think allistic people always have at least one trait associated with nuerodivergency. It's when the traits pile up that there is something "off". I like being autistic. I don't have much experience being not autistic, but I truly do not mind. The issue for me is the lack of accommodations. Other than that, it's pretty chill. Sometimes it can be fun! I usually love hyperfixating. It's amazing how passionate I can get about something. I love being openly autistic as well. It's helped me learn to advocate for myself and give myself the accommodations that I need to function. The issue is when people romanticize things. A certain amount of romanticization is needed for destigmatization, but being autistic is just kind of a thing. And the "I want a boy with the tism" is so creepy to me. Huge chaser vibes.
@youraveragelilfriedgreentomato11 ай бұрын
personally, i think when it comes to people saying "they like their partners to be a little neurodivergent" is only okay when neurodivergent people do it. like i dont think i could date a neurotypical because im autistic, adhd, and i have tourettes. im not sure i feel like i coul relate to someone who didnt go through something similar to a point where id feel comfortable dating them. when neurotypicals say that though, it makes me want to tear my skin off.

bro i’m so glad you’re talking about the ”acoustic” thing. it feels the same as white people saying ”shut up lil n-word” on instagram reels (actually the word, not censored). like it started off amongst black people, but now most of the people saying it are white people, who just took the joke and ran with it. the acoustic thing feels a little bit like mockery to me, to be honest. like neurotypical people just took that word and now are using it to make fun of others. like we’re outside of the group, and this is some inside joke they have about us. same with the whole era of batman and ryan gosling with ”me pretending to be mysterious” or ”i’m literally batman” and then under that it says something like ”(i’m extremely autistic)”. i also saw a lot of videos about people saying they are schizophrenic during the batman trend. anyways, way too many about people being autistic or schizophrenic, when they aren’t. it just feels so weird, since these people are not autistic. it really just makes me feel odd, since these people don’t actually have to deal with the things that come with being autistic, and genuinely it feels like were being mocked, or looked down upon, seen as a joke.

as someone who has Autism & ADHD, it makes me happy that people even want to group you with us lol. I think you could possibly be neurodivergent, which to me is a gift! thank you for creating such a safe space for us Kurtis, constant laughs with your podcasts!! ❤️ loved your special (was second row at your Toronto special) & rewatching this week made me laugh even harder somehow!

Honestly the whole autism thing is so bizarre! I feel like it’s got to a point where people think that autism is just liking dinosaurs and being a little bit silly sometimes 🤪but it’s like a genuine disability. The only other autism stuff I see going viral is like “sad” videos of little kids having violent meltdowns. I feel like autism is just romanticised until it’s not. People think it’s cute and quirky until it stops being fun for allistic people

Idk much about it but this "are you acoustic?" stuff sounds like it could easily lead into using autism as a replacement for the word dumb. Not saying that is all of it, just seems like it could easily lead into it

yeah they’re basically just replacing “acoustic” with “retard” atp (also im autistic dw i can reclaim it)

That's a bit wild that one day there will be an entry in a history textbook about George Santos and they'll say "so yea this guy had an OnlyFans account"
