FIAT bailed out a company with a badly aging product rang. Using outside expertise and parts, Lancia built Statos, Beta, Integrale, plus competition cars ( Abarth project numbers) like 037, S4, GpA I ntegrale, LC3 etc. Be grateful to Fait, all those cars used Fiat money and running gear (or Ferrari V6 in acouple of cases.)

Totally agree. In the early 90’s I worked at a motor museum that had two Lotus (Colin Chapman) test & development shallow V4 engines. They looked almost exactly the same as the lotus twin cam units that we all know, but we’re slightly wider & had crudely engineered wider rocker covers. I don’t think they were ever used in production & those two lotus V4’s are the only ones I’ve ever known of.

This was wonderful. As a child, I used to be incredibly fascinated with television shows that showed the processes involved in how things were made. As an adult I find watching proper craftsmen such as these, who have the knowledge, skills and experience necessary to essentially "re-make" something such as your Fulvia Zagato, to be even more fascinating.

I’m looking forward to your next visit. I recall some 55 years ago helping a local farmer put the engine back into his Fulvia HF after it received some terminal damage on a local club rally! He asked me if I could help lift the engine and gearbox as a unit back into the body. As I had a Mini at the time I couldn’t see how this was as easy as he claimed but it turned out to be relatively simple job and only took a day. It was a beautiful little car and whilst I now have an MG I’ve always admired both the Fulvia’s but alas I’m now too old to enjoy one.

The debate on colour is interesting. Black is a swine to maintain: shows every swirl mark, every speck of dust, every bit of bird poo; but it also shows off the lines to perfection, and does look elegant, as well as revealing the creativity and thought that Spada put into the shaping on the shell. The red is rather garish in my view, and while it draws the eye, it doesn’t do the car any favours when your gaze gets there. It also makes it a little more difficult to travel “under the radar”; you’re always going to get noticed in a red version, whereas the black allows an element of stealth to be applied. I repainted my Fulvia Sport a few years back, from its former beige to Lancia’s traditional deep blue, blu lord. Ten years on I still think it looks great. Whatever we all say, Harry, it’s your car: I’m sure you’ll paint it whatever colour you like, and the result will be fascinating. Thanks for a very interesting series.

The paint chip you handed over was definitely orange, but the actual colour of the 27 factory-commissioned Fulvia Sports 'Competition' (or 'Daytona type' ) was salmon pink, or rosso salmone. It's a very distinctive colour which lacks yellow and therefore can't really be decribed as orange.
