As an asian, it’s very frustrating how I work so hard in school - do assignments almost everyday, take rigorous classes, juggle clubs, leadership positions, volunteer, do after school stuff, sports, sleep so little, and all that is discredited because I’m asian and that’s how we’re expected to be

I'm sorry to hear that but affirmative action policies are designed to address historical and ongoing inequalities that have put certain groups of people, including African Americans and other underrepresented minorities, at a disadvantage. The goal of affirmative action is to create a more diverse and inclusive student body that reflects the demographics of society as a whole. It is important to note that admission decisions at top universities are not solely based on race or ethnicity. Admissions committees take into consideration a wide range of factors, including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, essays, letters of recommendation, and personal qualities. While having a strong academic record is certainly important, it is not the only criterion that is considered. Admissions rates at top universities have been decreasing in recent years. This is due in part to the increasing number of international applicants, particularly from India and East Asia, as well as the growing popularity of these universities among students worldwide, Harvard's admission rate was about 15% in 2003, now it's less than 5%. It is also worth noting that many applicants apply to multiple universities, regardless of their true interest in the programs offered, which further reduces acceptance rates. I recall watching a video of someone reacting to their admission results and saying "Brown doesn't even have my major but I applied incase I don't get into the any other Ivy". The goal of top universities is to select a diverse and talented group of students who will contribute to the intellectual and social life of the campus community. While affirmative action policies play a role in achieving this goal, they are just one factor among many that are considered in the admissions process.

Caltech is a great school and the amount of Asians enrolling there is around 44% because Caltech cares about merit. If Harvard and the other ivy League didn't discriminate against Asians, the enrollment would be around 40% instead of around 20% currently.

@veronicamaine3813
@veronicamaine3813 Жыл бұрын
It’s actually 28% - that is not a low percentage when you take into account that Asian Americans only account for 5.6% of the population. Cal tech is higher but I wouldn’t be surprised if that has something to do with its engineering strengths and the popularity of computing science over law medicine generally. Also if Harvard or cal tech accepted only on academic merit they would have only valedictorians (and even then would end up rejecting some). That’s what happens when your acceptance rate is 4%. But that would pretty much suck for diversity, so Universities accept in a number of factors - considering how much benefit they get from minorities financial etc your probably more ahead in the stakes than you think. The reality is it’s all a scam. You get in on a bunch of criteria, race being just one - hell the fact that your not dirt poor can work against and for you depending on the year. Don’t make the uni you get into your personality.

Do you write? or sing? Is there a research project you are passionate about? Have you had an industry expert or professors opinion on it? Have you tried any entrepreneurship? I’m desi, so I’m not the same type of Asian you are. But I completely understand the frustration that ensues with working as hard as you can but still being denied a chance due to your heritage, something you have no control over. I really don’t understand why colleges limit acceptances for Asian applicants because we are some of the most hardworking and successful people out there, and no doubt contribute greatly to society. And you are absolutely right that you should never hide something that is integral to who you are and to your lived experience. If a college acts in such a sense, then they don’t deserve amazing people like you on their campus anyway. Encouraging diversity is great and all, but not at the expense of students solely due to their immutable traits. Interestingly, I know a family who actually spoke with a Harvard admissions consultant. They apparently said that if you are brown and want to go into premed, don’t even bother applying to Harvard because your chances are already exponentially low. I’m not sure if the same applies to East Asians, but all I know was that it was a tragically unsurprising attitude. Don’t lose faith in yourself though, you will have a fantastic time and shine at any college you choose to go to!!
@Rhileyn
@Rhileyn 10 ай бұрын
Off-topic, but I hate that you have to specify “not the same type of Asian” because you don’t need to. Desis ARE Asians. If anything, East Asians should begin adding that “East” as a prefix and save us all the stereotypes cause I’m so so so tired of them acting like they represent the whole continent of 48 COUNTRIES!! Ik that’s the term perhaps Americans use but they need to change that; so cringe.

I think many students try to rationalize rejection of their application from top school, because we tend to believe that there is some kind of rational formula behind admission process and that we can calculate our chance. However, it is not true, there is no solid rationale why some students are accepted while others are rejected.

Well, as soon as I got to high school and started applying for lab internships for research I got rejected because I was asian. My friends were brainstorming ways on how to appear less asian so they could get into programs and internships. Suddenly, my appearance and last name was something I could use to my advantage. But it still stung just as much. I’m not spanish, I’ve never been spanish. I was proud to be Filipina. But when being Asian put me at a disadvantage, I guess I just had to adapt to succeed.

but still, Ivy admissions are very subjective. I say this as an IITian in India who is considering applying for MS in US. We have a very tough objective type exam, and admissions are strictly based on its results. Of course this has its drawbacks, as it disincentivises high schoolers from working on research, and they instead just focus on rote learning and practice; But no one can argue with the fairness of this system. I think middle ground should be found.

my competitions, my achievements, my grades, my intelligence and work habits are all something I work for MYSELF. But instead of the credit going to me as a person, they think it’s because of my race. “Oh! She’s the only one who got a 100 on her test out of the whole school!” “Yeah, it’s because she’s Asian.” My race has NOTHING to do with my IQ! It’s so frustrating.

I like and respect Asians. I used to have an Asian girlfriend. I’m also a Stanford graduate. I’m embarrassed that Stanford (and the Ivies) are systematically discriminating against Asians. We all know how why that is happening. As a group, you are too smart, too disciplined, and too high-achieving to avoid being the target of envy.

Great job embracing your culture.I'd say it's not your college that defines you, it's what you do that defines your college.You worked hard and if that's the case Harvard and Stanford should be ashamed.I do believe giving souch weightage to essays along with standardized tests is stupid though cause there's so much that defines you as a person even communication wise and that narrows the spectrum of deserving students that get in due to cultural differences as well.

Ivy League kids achieve great accolades in their youth of whatever they are interested in. This often times comes in the form of of competitive arts which takes decades to groom. And this takes coaches and countless hours of private lessons discipline and mastery think of raising a young prince. This is the legacy lifestyle these schools expect. A royal type of upbringing and since you’re in a whole nother country you first had to survive then thrive there wasn’t enough time for your parents to learn the royal customs of another nation

What I underdtand is that Colleges want diversity. Wether it's diversity in beliefs, race, gender, or income/class. From what i know, a lot of the school's that most Asians apply to already have a large number of Asians. If a school is filled with 90% Asians and White people, probably of middle class- upper class, there wouldn't be any diversity. Diversity helps students interact with many different people. We learn from those whose experiences, beliefs, and perspectives are different from our own, and these lessons can be taught best in a richly diverse intellectual and social environment. It promotes personal growth-and a healthy society. I am very sorry for those who work hard and get rejected, but the value of diversity is very important in society. I don't think wanting diversity is racist.

Wait omg does this apply to most Unis? I’m not East Asian but I’m Arab (and we also experience discrimination) and I’m not applying to an ivy , I’m applying to U of T but my personal essay talks a lot abt my personal struggles with my identity and culture as an immigrant and how art helped me overcome that, do u think that could harm my chances?

Dont worry about it. You’ll do fine in life without Ivy degree. If it really bothers you, it is much easier to get into Ivies for grad school. I was a typical Asian nerd in High School: perfect SAT scores. County Math Champ. No way I could get into Ivies undergrad. I got a full Navy ROTC Scholarship to U of Washington instead. And many years later, I’m getting my Masters from Harvard. I don’t need it for my career. It’s just a pure exercise in ego gratification (and finally bringing honor to the family). The great thing about America is that you get second chances.

Dear, I'm from Asia . Despite my desire to apply to these schools, high school in my country is not comparable to the Higheschool there. In my country, when we turn 15, we have a choice of five different fields. We all attend the same class and there are no extra classes offered. No schoolclubs, sports teams, or other similar activities are available. What should I do ?

It’s also because from my understanding Affirmative action because Asians have been primarily getting into Ivy League Schools so in order to get minorities into these institutions the Asian applicants will get overlooked and put to the side even though they are the more qualified candidates. And despite the fact these traits are generally indicators of success and prevalent for Asians it then becomes stereotyped. If you think I’m crazy my cousin in South Africa where affirmative action is being practiced is of Indian origin got rejected from so many med schools because they needed to hire more black students despite there not being a lot of them applying. The only University she was accepted into was a previously all white one and didn’t meet the quota of Indian students.

As someone who grew up Asian in an Asian country, I never felt outcast cuz of my skin lmao. Although, my eyes are really small that whenever I need to get my picture taken for like a passport or something, the person taking my picture would tell me to open my eyes bigger. Also my mum regularly uses the n word when she talks about black people cuz she doesn't understand why its hurtful. I think its also cuz there aren't many black people here. Like I have Chinese, malay, Indian and even white friends but I haven't even met anyone who is black here.
