Great review! I've seen several reviews of this Hassleblad, but yours, by far, is the most interesting, because you're comparing it to the other Hassleblad, not just the camera, but the lenses as well. It's a great way to see what the capabilities are. Kenneth's family are adorable!

Hasselblad includes a focus screen mask in the box, so you can see the sensor crop when using the back on your 500 series camera. You can also buy a dedicated focus screen with crop marks and split prism, so accurate focus becomes much easier to achieve. Agree your sentiments about colour and dynamic range. Image quality is superb and outweighs any concerns about speed, etc.

One thing you appreciate, after watching the photos side by side, are the new modern lenses. They are so much sharper. But the old ones does have that nice “vintage” look too. It is subjective. 40 years old lens - the Zeiss Planar was designed by Dr. Paul Rudolph in 1896. It suffered from glare with 6 elements. In the 1930s, Mr. Makula at Zeiss invented the T coating and this made the Planar suitable for the Hasselblad V system in the 1950s to start with. Later, the T coating was improved and called T*.

Based on personal experience I'd say the old hasselblad Zeiss lenses are sharper than most modern lenses, which is really amazing. I'd love to have this for my 500c, but it's just too expensive. We had to ship it back shortly after we shot this, unfortunately, but we're both eager to get one in our hands again! We'll see what we can do. As for the autofocus, that's for you to determine, of course ;). Personally I would wrestle with the AF for the sake of the amazing colors and tones the camera renders, but I'm also very used to manual focus, coming from cinema and rangefinder world. So I know that if worse comes to worse, I could just manually focus. If you go shoot with a Pentax 645 or Contax 645 film camera, that might give you an idea of how the AF performs. It felt similar to that.

Hi guys. Nice review. I've heard that the X1D II 50C sensor attracts dust more readily that other cameras. What was your expeieince with the 907X 50C?
@kennethcmerrill4 жыл бұрын
I don't know if that's a sensor issue or the fact that it's just so big. We did find ourselves blowing off the sensor occasionally, but I wouldn't say it was any more than what would happen with a Sony Alpha body. I think most cameras that don't have a closed shutter when the lens is off (God bless Canon for implementing that) will require "checking the gate" frequently.
@derrickdu4 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Merrill Totally agreed. I had to inspect the sensor every time I took off the lens. Otherwise, I could be in for a disappointment. The good news is, Hasselblad lenses are so expensive, I don’t have that problem very often.

@TheSlantedLens4 жыл бұрын
Here is what they say about it: "50MP sensor. It's still medium format, and 67% larger in area than full frame"
@inevitablecraftslab4 жыл бұрын
@@TheSlantedLens i know, thats what i meant, 67% larger area(!) is nothing. Fullframe is twice the area of DX, thats a difference where i understand people going fullframe vs DX. But the hasselblads sensor is only 7mm bigger than fullframe, thats nothing compared to even the small 645 medium format, let alone a 6x6 hasselblad which is 3,6 times bigger than fullframe thats 360% ! I mean each to their own, but i cant see the benefit of this. Not even if you alread own a hasselblad.
@robertboyer59262 жыл бұрын
The actual frame area of 6x6 is more like 56mmx56mm to the extreme edge of the frame and actually varies a bit depending on camera/back/etc... in my testing of my 500 series cameras you can actually frame a bit less in the finder (the 56mm is a bit wider than what you see on the focus screen so it's more like 53-55, very hard to tell). Most of the time you crop 6x6 to somewhere near 6x4.5 for commercial use which is actually more like 56mm best case on the. long edge. Practically you probably go in a bit for 1mm reasons (tiny straiten, the fact you framed a bit tighter based on the VF etc etc) The actual size of the sensor is 44mmx33mm tells you a bit more, so does the "normal lens" which is 65mm vs 80mm on 6x6 = not that much different. Also if you LOVE square pictures like I do then cropping square = 33x33 and you loose far less resolution than cropping 24x36 "full frame". In practicality is is MUCH bigger given most verticals are cropped 4:3/6x4.5-ish from 3:2 35mm images. (kind of why the 24x70 is so popular for portrait and fashion shooters = the long end seems longer when you are not using the 3:2 aspect ratio for 99% of you pics).
